This story takes place in the 21st century where a Korean young man, Choi Seung Hyun
and a Japanese girl, Suzuki Yumiko who fell in love with each other while they volunteered as
doctors in Kenya. However, they didn’t get blessings from his family because Seung Hyun’s
grandfather held grudges against the Japanese. Mr. Choi’s hatred against the Japanese is so
intense as he was traumatized by them during the World War II.

During the World War II, Mr. Choi’s mother was forced by the Japanese military to
become a comfort woman. Mr. Choi’s father tried to stop the military from taking the love of his
life away but he was beaten to death by the Japanese soldiers. All of that happened right in front
of the eyes of Mr. Choi. Since then, he started hating the Japanese and assumed all of them are
severely cruel and heartless. Decades later, his hatred towards them never faded away. He has
never traveled to Japan nor purchase any Japanese brand products. He even gave up on a million
dollar contract because he had to work with a Japanese company if he signed it.

However, his only grandson, Seung Hyun has no idea the reasons behind his avid actions
against the Japanese until his grandmother, Mrs. Choi told him what happened decades ago.
Seung Hyun decided to give Yumiko as he made a promise to his grandparents that he will only
marry someone that both of them approve. After the break up, Yumiko returned to her
hometown, Tokyo while Seung Hyun started working for his grandfather.

Five years later, Yumiko went to South Korea to attend a family friend’s wedding. When
she was on her way back to her hotel after attending the wedding, she saw an old man fainted

right in front of her eyes. Without any hesitations, Yumiko ran to check his conditions.
Apparently, he got a heart attack. She performed CPR on him and called the ambulance for him.
On the ambulance she realized that the old man was Mr. Choi. Mr. Choi was then rushed to the
ER. Seung Hyun and Mrs. Choi rushed to the hospital when they received the news. There,
outside the operation room, Seung Hyun and Yumiko finally meet each other the first time since
the breakup. Hours later, the doctor came out of the operation room and told them Mr. Choi was
doing fine and the operation was really successful.

Mr. Choi then found out the one who saved his life was Yumiko. He then realised his
mistake for labelling all Japanese are cruel. He finally granted his blessings to Seung Hyun and
Yumiko. Seung Hyun immediately ran to Yumiko’s hotel before she return to Tokyo. They got
back together. Yumiko moved to Seoul and started working there as a doctor. Two years later,
the couple got married and lives happily ever after.

Seung Hyun is a recent graduate from Seoul University, one of the most prestigious
universities in Asia. Before he kicks off his promising career as a doctor, he decided to take a
gap year and volunteer in Kenya. There and then he is in love with Suzuki Yumiko. Both of them
fell for each other instantly though they have completely different cultural backgrounds.

Setting: Kenya
Seung Hyun

: Hi! My name is Seung Hyun. Choi Seung Hyun. I’m from South Korea.
What is your name?

Yumiko

: I’m Suzuki Yumiko.

Seung Hyun

: I guess you’re from Japan. Which part of Japan are you from?

Yumiko

: Tokyo.

Seung Hyun

: Do you mind if I address you as Miko?

Yumiko

: *smiles shyly*

Seung Hyun

: I will take that as a yes.

Yumiko

: I never expected a Korean would want to bond with a Japanese.

Seung Hyun

: What makes you think so?

Yumiko

: You know…

Seung Hyun

: The conflicts between our countries?

Yumiko

: Yes.

Seung Hyun

: It’s not your fault, right? What happened in the past should have been left in
the past. What is the point of holding a grudge?

Yumiko

: I attended a student exchange program at South Korea back in my high
school days and that was one of the toughest two weeks of my life.

Seung Hyun

: What happened?

Yumiko

: The students at the high school didn’t really like us, the Japanese students.
I’m sorry if I offended you but they are racist. They called us with offensive
names. Though we don’t really understand the meaning since they spoke in
Korean but from the tone, we knew they were saying negative things. *Starts
crying*

Seung Hyun

: I apologise on behalf of those who have offended you and your
friends.*Hugs Yumiko*

Yumiko

: You don’t have to apologise. You’re not like them. You are different.

Seung Hyun

: *Wipes the tears on Yumiko’s face.* From now onwards, I’ll protect you.
You can always count on me. I’ll be your knight in shiny armor.

Yumiko

: But we’re different in many ways. Are you sure this could work? Would
your family approve me?

Seung Hyun

: As long as they learn to understand you and your culture. Besides, my
grandparents, though they are in their late 70 now but they are pretty openminded.

Yumiko

: I guess I will trust you.

Seung Hyun

: Don’t worry. You can always count on me.

Yumiko

: I really don’t want to get discriminated again. It hurts.

Seung Hyun

: You won’t. You have me now.

Yumiko

: *Looks at Seung Hyun and smile*

Seung Hyun

: Grandpa, I would like you and grandma to meet my girlfriend. We had been
dating for a year.

Mr. Choi

: It’s about time for you to settle down.

Seung Hyun

: Are you free tomorrow? I’ll make a reservation at your favorite restaurant.

Mrs. Choi

: What is more important than meeting our future daughter-in-law?

Seung Hyun

: I’ll take that as a yes.

Mr. Choi

: What’s her name? Is she also a doctor like you?

Seung Hyun

: I’ll leave those questions for her to answer when you meet her tomorrow.

Mrs. Choi

: I bet she is a nice girl.

Seung Hyun

: Yes. She is very nice but she may be slightly different from those girls that you
set me up before.

Mr. Choi

: She doesn’t have to come from a rich family, as long as she has a kind heart
and loves just as much as me and your grandma loves you then we will you our
blessings.

Mrs. Choi

: Nothing matters more to us than our only grandson’s happiness.

Setting: Restaurant
Seung Hyun

: I’m sorry to keep both of you waiting.

Mr. Choi & Mrs. Choi: It’s alright. We arrived early.

out of your mind? What is so good about her?

Seung Hyun

: What is the matter?

Mr. Choi

: I would never allow our family’s pure Korean blood got ruined by this
Japanese woman.

Seung Hyun

: Why are you being so rude out of a sudden?

Mr. Choi

: Me? Rude? Ask her what the Japanese have done to us. She’s a witch.

Seung Hyun

Mr. Choi

: If you insist to marry her, then don’t ever address me as your grandpa. I’ll cut
off all my ties with you. We shall never meet nor talk again. *Exits the
restaurant*

Seung Hyun

: Grandma, what is wrong with him? Why is he being so rude to Yumiko?

Mrs. Choi

: I would have warned both of you if I know this young lady is Japanese.

Seung Hyun

: What is wrong with her being Japanese? Grandma! What is going on?

Mrs. Choi

: There’s a reason why your grandfather do not approve this relationship and the
reason is his hatred against the Japanese. During the World War II,

Yumiko

of me. Things just don’t work that way. I know you love me and I love you too.
Let’s break up. *Storms out of the restaurant*

Part 3: Reunited
Yumiko travelled to South Korea to attend her friend’s wedding. It had been five years
since the last time she travelled to South Korea. It was her first time travelling there all alone. As
she was walking around the streets of Seoul alone, she saw an old man fainted right in front of
her eyes.

because of her I would be in the morgue now. I need to thank this lovely lady
personally.

Mr. Choi

: Yumiko? The Japanese girl?

Seung Hyun

: Yes, my ex-girlfriend, Suzuki Yumiko. She’s a Japanese and she saved your
life.

Mr. Choi

: I was wrong all these time. I shouldn’t have humiliated her. I shouldn’t have
stopped both of you from getting married. I made a big mistake. Seung Hyun,
do you still love her?

Seung Hyun

: Yes. She is the love of my life.

Mr. Choi

: Go and get her before it’s too late.

Yumiko

: You didn’t do anything wrong. I get why your grandfather was so mad at the
Japanese. I myself as a Japanese admit the fact that the army have done lots of
cruel things in the past. I don’t blame you nor your grandfather.

Seung Hyun

: *Hugs Yumiko* I’m sorry. Can we start all over? It was my fault that I didn’t
protect you five years ago. I broke my promise.

Yumiko

: *Nods* I forgive you.

Yumiko moved to Seoul and started working there as a doctor. Two years later, the
couple finally tied the knot and lives happily ever after.

Concepts applied in the story

Intercultural communication is “the interaction between people from different cultural
backgrounds” (Martin & Nakayama, 2009). These days, the world we live in is a “global village”
that no nation, group or culture can stay anonymous (Samovar & Porter, 1991). All parts of the
world are affected if anything happened in a part of it. The growths in technology and changes
in demographics have shaped a world which intercultural communication is common. As the
world became smaller, the interaction between people from many different cultures increases as

the modern technology has made it easier for the people to communicate with people anywhere
around the world.

Samovar & Porter (1997) mentioned that the communication practices and behaviors of
people with different cultures will vary as their perceptions of the world are not the same. In
some cases, the message may be interpreted to carry a different meaning than was intended when
it is encoded by a person in one culture and decoded by a person in another culture in the context
of his or her own cultural background.

Attribution and perceptual errors are more likely to occur between peoples with many
differences. Therefore, some problems may occur during intercultural interactions.

Ethnocentrism
Ethnocentrism is a negatively judging aspect of another culture by the standards of one’s
own culture. Being ethnocentric is being in the superiority of one’s own culture. Every one of us
goes from an ethnocentric perspective, but difficulties arise when we interpret and evaluate other
cultures negatively compared with our own. In general, a lack of interaction with one another
culture brings up high levels of ethnocentrism and encourages the impression of cultural
superiority. Ethnocentrism makes others fell defensive.

Example:

Mr. Choi

: *Drops his cup on the table* There is no way that I am giving both of you my
blessings. Seung Hyun, of all the girls out there, you chose a Japanese? Are you
out of your mind? What is so good about her?

Seung Hyun

: What is the matter?

Mr. Choi

: I would never allow our family’s pure Korean blood got ruined by this
Japanese woman.

In Love and War, one of the reasons Mr. Choi refused to give blessing to Seung Hyun
and Yumiko is due to ethnocentrism. Mr. Choi believed in the superiority of the Korean culture
and held the believe that allowing a non-Korean to marry into the family would only ruin his
family’s pure Korean bloodline. His words were rather offensive towards Yumiko.

Stereotype
In 1922, a journalist, Walter Lippmann used the word “stereotyping” to describe
judgments made about others on the basis of their ethnic group membership. At present, it is
used more to refer to judgments made on the basis of any group membership. According to the
psychologists, stereotyping is explained as mistakes that our brains make in the perception of
visual illusions. The brain often reaches the wrong conclusion when the information is
ambiguous. Stereotypes can be positive or negative.

Example:
Seung Hyun

: What is wrong with her being Japanese? Grandma! What is going on?

Mrs. Choi

: There’s a reason why your grandfather do not approve this relationship and the
reason is his hatred against the Japanese. During the World War II,
grandfather’s mother who is your great grandmother was forced by the Japanese

He even gave up on a million dollar contract because he had to work with a
Japanese company if he signed it.

In the script, Mr. Choi held negative stereotype against the Japanese, he assumed that all
Japanese are cruel and anything related to the Japanese are bad. For instance, he refused to
purchase Japanese good and declined a golden opportunity to work with a Japanese company.

Prejudice
According to Rothenberg (1992), Prejudice means the irrational dislike, suspicion, or
hatred of a particular group, race, religion, or sexual orientation. A person is viewed according to
the superficial characteristics that make them part of the group. It is confirmed that the highly
prejudiced individual has an authoritarian personality (Adorno et al., 1950). Even when
presented with new and conflicting information, the highly prejudiced people are unlikely to
change their attitudes.

Example:
Seung Hyun

: Why are you being so rude out of a sudden?

Mr. Choi

: Me? Rude? Ask her what the Japanese have done to us. She’s a witch.

Seung Hyun

: Grandpa!

In Love and War, Mr. Choi disliked Yumiko and called her a witch because of her race.
Though Seung Hyun tried to convince change Mr. Choi’s rude attitude towards Yumiko but he
refused to listen.

Racism
Racism is the belief that doctrine that inherent differences among the various human
races, usually comprising the idea that one’s own race is superior. Racism and discrimination
were used as great weapons boosting fear or hatred of others in times of conflict and war, and
even during economic downturns.

Example:

: I attended a student exchange program at South Korea back in my high

Korean but from the tone, we knew they were saying negative things. *Starts

In the script, Yumiko and the other Japanese exchange students were victims of racism.
The South Korean high school students called them names and talked behind their backs simply
because of their race. Their rude behaviors scared Yumiko’s feelings.

Concepts applied in the story Intercultural communication is “the interaction between people from different cultural backgrounds” (Martin & Nakayama, 2009). These days, the world we live in is a “global village” that no nation, group or culture can stay anonymous (Samovar & Porter, 1991). All parts of the world are affected if anything happened in a part of it. The growths in technology and changes in demographics have shaped a world which intercultural communication is common. As the world became smaller, the interaction between people from many different cultures increases as FNBE JULY 2013 – FCOM 0102 EFFECTIVE PUBLIC COMMUNICATION SHARON CHOW CI YUNG, LEE QIAN YING, TEOH HUI YU, VICKY LEE WEI KEE, LIM CHONG MIN
  • 15. 15 | P a g e the modern technology has made it easier for the people to communicate with people anywhere around the world. Samovar & Porter (1997) mentioned that the communication practices and behaviors of people with different cultures will vary as their perceptions of the world are not the same. In some cases, the message may be interpreted to carry a different meaning than was intended when it is encoded by a person in one culture and decoded by a person in another culture in the context of his or her own cultural background. Attribution and perceptual errors are more likely to occur between peoples with many differences. Therefore, some problems may occur during intercultural interactions. Ethnocentrism Ethnocentrism is a negatively judging aspect of another culture by the standards of one’s own culture. Being ethnocentric is being in the superiority of one’s own culture. Every one of us goes from an ethnocentric perspective, but difficulties arise when we interpret and evaluate other cultures negatively compared with our own. In general, a lack of interaction with one another culture brings up high levels of ethnocentrism and encourages the impression of cultural superiority. Ethnocentrism makes others fell defensive. • 16. 16 | P a g e Mr. Choi : *Drops his cup on the table* There is no way that I am giving both of you my blessings. Seung Hyun, of all the girls out there, you chose a Japanese? Are you out of your mind? What is so good about her? Seung Hyun : What is the matter? Mr. Choi : I would never allow our family’s pure Korean blood got ruined by this Japanese woman. In Love and War, one of the reasons Mr. Choi refused to give blessing to Seung Hyun and Yumiko is due to ethnocentrism. Mr. Choi believed in the superiority of the Korean culture and held the believe that allowing a non-Korean to marry into the family would only ruin his family’s pure Korean bloodline. His words were rather offensive towards Yumiko. Stereotype In 1922, a journalist, Walter Lippmann used the word “stereotyping” to describe judgments made about others on the basis of their ethnic group membership. At present, it is used more to refer to judgments made on the basis of any group membership. According to the psychologists, stereotyping is explained as mistakes that our brains make in the perception of visual illusions. The brain often reaches the wrong conclusion when the information is ambiguous. Stereotypes can be positive or negative. Example: Seung Hyun : What is wrong with her being Japanese? Grandma! What is going on? FNBE JULY 2013 – FCOM 0102 EFFECTIVE PUBLIC COMMUNICATION SHARON CHOW CI YUNG, LEE QIAN YING, TEOH HUI YU, VICKY LEE WEI KEE, LIM CHONG MIN

  • 18. 18 | P a g e Prejudice According to Rothenberg (1992), Prejudice means the irrational dislike, suspicion, or hatred of a particular group, race, religion, or sexual orientation. A person is viewed according to the superficial characteristics that make them part of the group. It is confirmed that the highly prejudiced individual has an authoritarian personality (Adorno et al., 1950). Even when presented with new and conflicting information, the highly prejudiced people are unlikely to change their attitudes. Example: Seung Hyun : Why are you being so rude out of a sudden?
