and resurrection of Jesus and it was originated by Catholics
2. How do some people here in the U.S celebrate Easter? (secular and religious) Some
people go to church and some have an Easter egg hunt or dye eggs.
3. What do you know about how it is celebrated in Spain? In Spain, they probably go to
church because most Hispanics are Catholic

5. When is it? the week leading up to Easter
6. Where are the processions going and why? they go through the streets (parade) to
the Cathedral of Seville; leads back to their home church
7. What are brotherhoods and what is their purpose? associations of Catholic
laypersons organized for the purpose of performing public acts of religious observance
8. What happens during Semana Santa? many people view and participate in the
various aspects of the processions
9. Who are Nazarenos and how are they dressed? one of the brotherhoods with a
number of people dressed in a habit and with the distinctive pointed hood holding long
wax candles marching in silence
10. What is at the beginning of the processions? In the middle? a great cross; pasos
11. What is a Paso? an image or set of images set atop a movable float of wood
12. What are 3 possible pasos? How old are some of them? the passion, christ, and the
virgin mary; some of them were carved in the 16th century

13. Who are costaleros and what do they do? they are men that help give the illusion
that the paso moves on its own (they are inside of the floats curtains at the bottom)
14. What is the traditional dress of women for this? for men? la mantilla; lace mantle,
stiffened by shell or another material, and a black dress, with black shoes; dark suir,
black necktie and shoes for men
15. How do people behave as the processions go past? the crowd behaves normally as
the Nazarenos go by but are in utter silence when an image passes and some small
children beg for candy

16. What is your impression and why? (3-4 thoughtful sentences with insight)
These images are breath-taking. They show how much Spanish-speaking countries are
devoted to being Christian. It seems as though they are not ashamed for believing in
what they do. Each of the images or sculptures look unique and yet they send similar
messages. The most interesting thing I saw was that there are places for royalty to sit;
it is very structured.
