2. CLIMATE CHANGE
What is climate change?
A substantial change in the
region average weather
pattern including average
temperature, precipitation &
wind
(Earth Reform, 2012).
refers to any long-term
change in normal weather
patterns caused by a process
that adjusts the climate, such
as a volcanic eruption
(Arkive, 2013)

3. CAUSES
Burning of fossil fuel for
energy-
• Coal is burn to produce
electricity from coal
power plants,
• gas to heat homes.
• oil to drive cars.
Contributing to production
of greenhouse gases.
Climate Change
Climate Change
4. Causes ……..
Increase in population-
• 7 billion people
• more people burning fossil fuels
for energy.
• By driving cars.
• Heating our homes with oil, gas &
electricity.
o we release greenhouse gases into
the atmosphere.
o In 2005, about 27 billion tones of
CO2 released into the atmosphere
(Arkives, 2013).
Climate Change
Climate Change
5. Causes…….
Livestock and agricultural production
o Clearing of land for farming,
o contributes to deforestation.
o Transportation of food across the world
results in burning of fosil fuel.
o Fertilizer production for crops
o Methane gas emitted by livestock
contributes to emissions. CH4 has increase
by 148% after industrial revolution.
(Earth Reform, 2012).
Climate Change
Climate Change
6. Causes
Deforestation and other changes
to the use of land.
Man-Made Activities
o Wood logging
o Building houses
o Farming
forests are a natural ‘sink’ of carbon dioxide.
plants absorb CO2 from the air into their
trunks, branches and leaves.
When forests are cleared or burned, their
stored carbon is released back into the air,
contributing to global warming
Deforestation Account for 23% of man-made CO2
emissions.
( Arkives, 2013)
Climate Change
Climate Change
7. Causes……..
Other man-made chemical
reactions.
1.Fluorinated gases-
• Man-made gases use in AC,
refrigerators, aerosols.
• High global warming gases
greatly depleting the ozone
layer.
2. CO2, and CH4 from breakdown
of waste in landfills.
(Earth Reforms, 2012)
Climate Change
Climate Change
8. Effects
Flooding and Draught
Change in precipitation
pattern.
Parts of the world will be
draught & others floods.
Affect crop field -food
shortage , fresh water supply
& housing.
(Earth Reform, 2012)
Climate Change
Climate Change
9. Effects……..
Poor Health & Death
o Polluted atmosphere-increased
respiratory illness.
o CC causes over 800, 000 deaths
annually (WHO, 2012).
o 150, 000 of these deaths from
air pollution.
o Children more vulnerable to
poor ambient air quality.
(WHO, Earth Reform, 2012)
Climate Change
Climate Change
10. Effects ………
Global Warming
Increase in planet average
temperature due to
greenhouse gases.
Extreme weather pattern
shift in all regions of the
world
(Earth Reform, 2012)
Climate Change
Climate Change
11. Effects ……..
Extinction of many species
& birds
1.Due to Extreme weather
conditions.
2.Chemical fishing etc.
o polar birds, turtle, dolphins
etc.
(IPSOR, 2013)
Climate Change
Climate Change
12. Effects……..
Risk of Human Extinction.
• Natural food supply
shortage
• Polluted rivers, lakes &
oceans with toxic
materials.
• Shortage of water supply.
• Polluted air –High risk of
airborne diseases
(Earth Reform, 2012)
Climate Change
Climate Change
13. Prevention
Limiting our electricity use
at home.
Use less hot water
Turn off the lights ,
heater , TV etc when
not needed.
(Earth Reform, 2012)
Climate Change
Climate Change
14. Prevention …….
Better Transport Choices to
reduce carbon emissions.
o Use fuel efficient cars
o Take public transport
Climate Change
Climate Change
15. Prevention ……
• Better Government
policies mandating
stricter laws on pollution
causing industries ( Earth
Reform, 2012).
Legislation in UK
o Climate Change Act 2008
o Climate Change (Scotland)
Act 2009
Climate Change
Climate Change
16. Prevention……
• Alternative Clean Energy
sources.
Renewal energy
o Biomass
o Solar energy
o Wind turbines
o Hydro electricity etc.
(Bionomic fuel, 20130)

18. Conclusion
You can help tackle climate change by:
• reducing, reusing and recycling products that you buy
• walk or take public transport to limit car usage.
• insulate your home better so that you do not need to use
so much energy to heat it.
• tell your friends and family about climate change and what
they can do to help.
Although each action may be small, if many people make
small changes it will add up to make a big difference.
