Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital-ShSMCH is one of the best public &
tertiary level Hospital of Bangladesh situated at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207Center of the Capital. This hospital (former ‘Ayub Central Hospital’) was planned to be
established by the central government (of former Pakistan) as a full-fledged general
hospital in Dhaka with modern medical facilities.
Most of the specialized Hospitals of Bangladesh are located near-by to this. And it is the
birthplace of many of those; Center for control of Rheumatic fever and heart diseases
(CRF & HD), NICVD, NIO, NIMD and NITOR.
Chronological Steps of Advancement  In July 1963- The initial scheme to establish a 200 bedded general hospital was
proposed. The proposal was approved by National Economic Council in the same
year.
 In 1964- This hospital started its journey to serve people. A two storied outpatient
department (OPD) was constructed over about 19.8 acres of land where outdoor
services including pathology, radiology as well as indoor facilities; firstly with 5 beds
and then 25 beds were included.
 In 1972- After Independence of Bangladesh, immediately after our great liberationwar, a renowned American philanthropic and orthopedic surgeon Professor. Dr. R. J
Garst came to Bangladesh as the head of a medical missionary team. This great man
organized a health camp, for treatment and rehabilitation of war-wounded freedom
fighters as well as general people within this campus which was later shifted to
Agargaon, Dhaka and named as RIHD (Now NITOR).
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman re-named this hospital after the name of great
patriotic and legend of democracy of this land, late Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy as
‘Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital’ and sanctioned 75 indoor beds with outpatient
Service.
 In 1983- An extension project profile was submitted for 500- bedded hospital to be
completed within 3 years. But this expansion project was delayed due to beauracratic
hazards; it was re-planned for 300 indoor beds in the first phase to be further
extended in subsequent phases. Later Bangladesh Government & IOC signed an
agreement to complete this project with 375-bedded indoor facilities as well as
pathology, radiology and causality service.
 In 1997- 2nd December, with new decoration and extended indoor facilities, then
honorable prime minister,Sheikh Hasina inaugurated three storied new extension
building behind outdoor. And this time, this hospital’s indoor service was upgraded in
large scale (with major medical departments) to accommodate all types of patients.
 In 2005 - 4th October: A meeting of planning committee of MOH & FW primarily
decided to establish a new medical College in the Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital
premises, and admit 100 students for MBBS course for 2005- 2006 academic session.

In 2006 - 26th February, MOH & FW permitted to start ‘Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical
College’- ShSMC academic year /session in 2006-2007. In April 2006, First batch of
medical students were admitted and their schedule class started in-time.
This year the College was renamed as ‘Begum Khaleda Zia Medical College’ instead
of the name after legend leader of democracy, late Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy. The
new name arose long debate and criticism among general people as well as hospital
staffs. In 2009 it was again re-named as ‘Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College’ ShSMC, as well as the Hospital as ‘Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College HospitalShSMCH.
In 2009- Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College, Dental unit started its academic
session.
In 2011- CT scan, Echocardiography and Endoscopy as well as ERCP services were
introduced in this hospital.
In 2012, 17th January- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated six-storied College
building next to emergency, south to the hospital.
There is a library for doctors and staffs in the 1st floor. Arrangements are being made
for developing on-line linkage as well as on-line medical e-book service.Doctors'
Club is situated in the 1st floor, and doctors' Canteen/ Cafeteria is in the ground floor.
There is a prayer place (Mosque) in the center of the hospital (ground floor) for staffs,
visitors and patients.
Presently, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital is a 650-bedded general &
tertiary level hospital in Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh with modern
medical facilities including eighteen indoor departments as well as outdoor services.
And by the next year, it is going to be 850 bedded.
About 1000-1200 patients are getting outpatient service daily from different
departments, and the demand is rapidly increasing day by day.

Besides those, a mega-project to improve service- Hospital Outdoor, Operation Theater,
Cabin block, Hospital Gate, Drainage system and new ward expansion is under process.
With fulfillment of all these, because of its service and location, Shaheed Suhrawardy
Medical College Hospital is expected to be one of the best medical institute of this country
