      5.5 million users
2006: Yahoo offered $1bn to buy Facebook

      worldwide

How was Facebook named ?
 The name „Facebook‟ origins from the colloquial name
(informal name) for the book given to students at the start
of the academic year by some university administrations
in the United States to help students get to know each
 other.
Mark Zuckerberg was inspired to make
              Facebook
   from the incident of Facemash.
Facemash
 Facemash, the Facebook‟s predecessor opened on
  October 28, 2003.
 Facemash "used photos from the online facebooks of nine
Houses, placing two next to each other at a time and
asking users to choose the 'hotter' person".
 Mark Zuckerberg hacked into Harvard‟s security network
and copied the student ID images for Facemash website.
[ thefacebook.com ]

 In January 2004, in the following semester
             at Harvard University, Mark Zuckerberg
began writing the code for a new website,
             known as 'thefacebook'.
            Within twenty-four hours, thefacebook.com
             had about 1500 registrants.
[ thefacebook.com ]
 Just six days after the launch of the site,
    three Harvard University seniors, Cameron
    Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya
    Narendra, accused Zuckerberg of
    intentionally misleading them into believing
that he would help them build a social
    network called HarvardConnection.com,
but he used their idea instead to build a
    competing product.

User Profile

Users can create profiles with photos, lists of personal interests,
contact information, and other personal information. Users can
communicate with friends and other users through private or public
messages and a chat feature. They can also create and join interest
groups and "like pages".
News Feed

News Feed
On September 6, 2006, a News Feed was announced, which
appears on every user's homepage and highlights information
including profile changes, upcoming events, and birthdays of the
user's friends.
Notes

Facebook Notes was introduced on August 22, 2006, a blogging
feature that allowed tags and embeddable images. Users were
later able to import blogs from Xanga, LiveJournal,Blogger, and
other blogging services.
Facebook Messages

On November 15, 2010, Facebook announced a new "Facebook
Messages" service. Users will be able to have an @facebook.com
email addresses, but it's not email". The system, to be available to
all of the Web site's users, combines text messaging, instant
messaging, emails, and regular messages, and will include privacy
settings similar to those of other Facebook services.
Facebook Chats

Chats
During the week of April 7, 2008, Facebook released a Comet-
based instant messaging application called "Chat" to several
networks, which allows users to communicate with friends and is
similar in functionality to desktop-based instant messengers.
Voice & Video Calling
Voice Calls
Since April 2011 Facebook users could to make live voice calls via
Facebook Chat, allowing users to chat with others from all over the
world. This feature lets the user add voice to the current Facebook
Chat as well as leave voice messages on Facebook.
Video Calling
On July 6, 2011, Facebook launched its video calling services using
Skype as its technology partner. It allows one to one calling using a
Skype Rest API
Gifts & Marketplace

Facebook launched Gifts on February 8, 2007, which allows users to
send virtual gifts to their friends that appear on the recipient's
profile. Gifts cost $1.00 each to purchase, and a personalized
message can be attached to each gift.
Marketplace lets users post free classified ads. Listings posted by a
user on Marketplace are seen only by users in the same network as
that user.
Tags

 A tag is a link to your profile. For example, if you are tagged in a post (such as
a photo or a status update), that post will contain a link to your profile.
 You can choose whether a post you've been tagged in appears on your profile.
If you approve a post and later change your mind, you can always remove it
    from your profile.
 If you do not want someone to tag you in their posts, we encourage you to
reach out to them and give them that feedback. If that does not work, you can
block them. This will prevent them from tagging you going forward.
Pages
 Facebook Pages are public pages.
 Companies use Pages to share information about their products.
 Celebrities use Pages to talk about their latest projects.
 Communities use pages to discuss topics of interest, everything from baseball to the
    opera.
 Because Pages are public, information you share with a Page is public information. This
means, for example, that if you post a comment on a Page, that comment can be used by
the Page owner off of Facebook, and anyone can see it.
 When you "like" a Page, you create a connection to that Page to your profile and your
friends may see it in their News Feeds. You may also receive updates from the Page in
your News Feed and your messages.
Subscribe

Facebook Subscribe
On September 14, 2011, Facebook launched a Subscribe button.
The feature allows for users to follow public updates, and these are
the people most often broadcasting their ideas
Sponsored Stories

 Facebook allows people to "sponsor" your stories to make sure your friends see
    them.
 For example, if you RSVP to an event hosted by a local restaurant, that
restaurant may want to make sure your friends see it so they can come too. If
they do sponsor a story, that story will appear in the same place ads usually do
under the heading "Sponsored Stories" or something similar. Only people that
could originally see the story can see the sponsored story, and no personal
information about you (or your friends) is shared with the sponsor.
Memorializing Accounts

Facebook may memorialize the account of a deceased person. When we
memorialize an account Facebook keeps the profile on Facebook, but only let
friends and family look at pictures or write on the user's Wall in remembrance. You
can report a deceased person's profile at:
https://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=deceased
Facebook also may close an account if we receive a formal request from the
person's next of kin.
Deactivate

Deactivating your account puts your account on hold. Other users will
no longer see your profile, but we do not delete any of your
information. Deactivating an account is the same as you telling not to
delete any information because you might want to reactivate your
account at some point in the future. You can deactivate your account
at: https://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php
Delete

When you delete an account, it is permanently deleted from
Facebook. It typically takes about one month to delete an account,
but some information may remain in backup copies and logs for up
to 90 days. You should only delete your account if you are sure you
never want to reactivate it. You can delete your account at:
https://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_ac

Ideology of Facebook
Social Design
Social Design defines how we understand ourselves and each other and can be
broken down into three core elements: Identity, Conversation and Community.

 Community refers to the people we know and trust and who help us make
    decisions.
 Conversation refers to the various interactions we have with our communities.
 Identity refers to our own sense of self and how we are seen by our communities.

Social Impact

1. With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows
users to continuously stay in touch with friends, relatives and other
acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as long as there is
   access to the Internet.
2. It can also unite people with common interests and/or beliefs
through groups and other pages, and has been known to reunite
lost family members and friends because of the widespread reach
   of its network.
