- 45. Conclusion I have been skateboarding for 6 years but I never realized how in depth and important skateboarding was. I never knew how difficult it was to film and edit a skate video.

- People of all ages and both genders all around the world skateboard. Skateboarding has been around for over fifty years and is now more popular than ever. The skateboarding industry makes millions of dollars a year and is still booming in the bad economy. Skateboarding keeps you physically in shape and fights obesity. Skateboarding brings people together and keeps people out of trouble.
- Skateboarding is a huge part of my life and shaped me as a person. I have met thousands of people through skateboarding and been to many new places.
- Skateboarding is an activity that has been around for the last 50 years. When first created it was said to be another fad and fade out after a while. But it is still around today and is more popular then it has ever been. It has evolved from a hobby into a lifestyle. Skateboarding is everywhere, it’s found in music, video games, movies, television and is participated in by about 18 million people throughout the world.
- Companies make skate videos to advertise there products whether it is skateboards, shoes, clothes, or something else. Companies endorse skateboarders who they think represents them good. They try to get the best skateboarders they can get. A skate video can either have parts or be in a montage form. Skate videos can also be made by a skate shop or can be an independent video.
- A skateboard consist of a deck, trucks, wheels, and bearings. Most skateboarders ride a 7.75 inch wide deck. The deck needs to be strong and able to with stand a lot but needs a little flexibility to obsorb force. Normally a deck is made from Canadian maple but could have other materials to make it stronger like fiber glass or hemp. Trucks are metal and connect the the deck to the wheels and bearings. They are used for grinding and turning. There are four wheels on a skateboard and they make the board move. The wheels have two eight ball bearings in them. Cliver, Sean. Disposable. - When skateboarding was invented in the early sixties it was known as Side Walk Surfing because it evolved from surfing. A side walk surfboard was a piece of wood shaped like a really small surf board with metal trucks and metal or clay wheels. In 1963 Makaha made the first professional skateboard model. - In the early seventies hardly anyone skateboarded anymore. It became almost impossible to buy a skateboard. Only skaters who were dedicated kept skateboarding and had to build there own skateboards. They would have to get a piece of wood and the trucks and wheels from roller skates. - A reason skateboarding was dying out is because it was so dangerous and was being band from many cities. The reason it was so dangerous was because the skateboards were such poor quality. The clay and metal wheels were slippery and many skateboarders fell because they didn’t grip. This caused skateboarding to fade out. Cadalac wheels invented urethane wheels which are made from oil. They grip the ground which allows one to ride on banks and invert walls. Without these urethane wheels vert skating would have never been vert skating. - Their were a group of teenage surfers who hung out at the Zephyr surf shop in Santa Monica. On days the surf was flat they would skateboarded. Due to a drought people couldn’t fill their swimming pools. These teenagers skated in all the empty pools. Zephyr made a skateboarding team in 1976 and they competed in the Delmar competition. Their style and posture was different from the other skateboarders, they mimicked surfing moves on their skateboards. They blew away the crowd and other skateboarders with their unique skate style. They became famous and the most popular skateboarders at the time. Each month “Skateboarder” magazine had a section for the Z-boys. Catherine Hardwicke. Sony, 2005. Film. This movie tells the true story of a group of skateboarders in the 1970's who revolutionized skateboarding. The movie differs from documenteries and books because it's easier to understand the atmosphere of the skateboarding scene in the 70's. The movie allows one undestand the charecterization of the skaters better then in a book or magazine. The movie shows skateboarding before there were skatevideos. I can use information I've learned in this movie for my powerpoint presentation. Also in the special features it discusses technique of skateboard filming.

- “Skateboarder” magazine was the first magazine for skateboarding and was published in 1964 and then stopped in 1965 but was remade again in 1975. There weren’t any skate videos so this magazine was the only way skateboarders knew what was going on in skateboarding. “Skateboarder” was known as the bible to skateboarders. Professional skateboarders that were regularly featured in this magazine were Bruce Logan, Russ Howell, Tom Sims, Gregg Weaver, and all the Z boys. Skate parks were being closed down because of liability issues and skateboarding was getting less popular again. Skateboarding was meshed with punk rock, the skateboard graphics showed skulls and other punk rock things. - Natas like the Z-boys grew up skating in Santa Monica. Skateboarding was all about ramps, pools, and drainage ditches “vert” skateboarding. Natas didn’t like the media and didn’t pay attention to any professional skateboarders. Natas had a unique style of skating and had no influence from mainstream skateboarding. Natas skated with a skateboarder named Mark Gonzales who had a similar skate style as Natas. They were the first ones to kickflip while moving and skate handrails and stairs. When his part in the Santa Cruz video “Wheels on Fire” came out it changed skateboarding forever. Skateboarders were amazed by his part and everyone wanted to skate like him. “Street Skating” became more popular and “vertical”skating slowly became less popular. - Skateboards in the nineties became smaller and stronger. Vert was dying and street skating was evolving quick. Smaller and lighter boards were easier to do street tricks and maneuvers like flipping your board down stair sets and grinding down handrails. The decks became straighter and symmetrical versus the triangular wavy eighties shapes. Since the early nineties the shape or size of the average skateboard has not changed. Cliver, Sean. Disposable. - In the Nineties skateboarding went from being looked down upon by society and being considered an underground sport to being took in by the media. Big corporations started making competitions featuring the best professional skateboarders. In 1995 ESPN created the X Games. In 1999 55 million people watched the X Games. Then later in 2005 Mountain Dew created the Dew Tour. Skateboard companies were started to be made by corporate business people as opposed to most companies who were founded by skateboarders. Many skateboarders don’t like the direction skateboarding is going in and prefer an “us against the world mentality.”
- Tony Hawk is the most well known skateboarder in the world and has won more skateboarding competitions and more X Games then any other skateboarder. He has made skateboarding popular and aware to a lot of people. He was the first one to land the 900 which is the biggest air rotation (2 and a half spins) ever done. - Professional skateboarders like Bam Margera, Ryan Sheckler, and Rob Drydek have their own shows on Mtv. Theses shows being on Mtv shows how popular skateboarding has gotten. These shows show the skateboarder lifestyle to a different crowd of people.

- Every skateboarder has their own way of skating but everyone falls under a vert or street skateboarder. There are different kinds of street skating like tech, freestyle, or stair and rail skaters. Examples of street skaters would be Mark Jonson, Jamie Thomas, or Chris Cole. Tech is skating on manny pads and ledges. Freestyle skating is all tricks on flat ground. Then there are street skateboarders who skate big stairs, gaps, and rails. There are vert skateboarders who half pipes and mega ramps then there are skateboarders who bowls and pools. - A type of skateboarding is long boarding that was popular in the sixties and seventies and now revived again in the 2000’s . A long board is a board that is longer then a normal skateboard and has bigger wheels and trucks. Most long board are just for cruising and transportation. Long board is big around places near the shore or colleges. Many college students use long boards to get from class to class. - Skateboarding has a punk rock influence so skateboarders would where things with a “street style.” In the late 80’s companies started designing their clothes to appeal to everyone. Companies like Airwalk and Vision made their markets much bigger. Skateboarding fashion became popular. - There are thousands of mom and pop skate shops all around the country but it is hard for most to stay is business. Mom and pop shops are usually started by a person who skates themselves and who knows a lot about skateboarding. It is hard for theses shops to stay in business because of a chain called Zumiez that is the majority of malls across the country. Also even though there is a high demand for skateboards there is usually only a ten dollar profit off each deck that is sold. Skateboards and clothes wear quick when you skateboard so it is very expensive to skateboard. Brett Ross, he works at a skate shop and is sponsored by them.
- Most townships don’t have skate parks though skateboarding is a huge sport and a 3 billion dollar industry. Most of the time skateboarders have to skate in places they’re not aloud to be. Skateboarders normally are trespassing on private property because they do not have a skate park. Companies don’t want people skateboarding on there property because it is a potential lawsuit if they get hurt. Skateboarders often get citations from the police for skateboarding. At most a extremely nice skate park costs about $70,000. - The most used video cameras for skate videos are the Sony Vx1000 and Panasonic Gl2. Theses cameras are easy to hold and film with while your riding on a skateboard filming. Videos like “Fully Flared”, “Almost Round 3”, “Yea Right”, and many other were filmed using one of these cameras.

- To edit a skate video you need to get clips that fit well with a song. Fast music fits better with fast skating and slower music fits better slower skating. If a you use a fast song the clips should be trimmed shorter and if you use a slower song it should be lines and/or slow motion clips. When a slower song is used it gives a better effect to lower the sound on the clips. In many skate videos like “That’s Life” or “Almost Round 3” some parts will have a regular passed song and then a slow song after with their best tricks all in slow motion. Herrick, Jake. - For my application I made a skate video. I had to travel to different spots and film my friends do tricks. I also had to edit the video and make the part. I made an intro then 3 parts and an ending montage.
