in the world, measuring 54,716 km

4. • Indonesia comprises 17,508 islands
• Indonesia's size, tropical climate, and
archipelagic geography, support the world's
second highest level of biodiversity (after
Brazil),and its flora and fauna is a mixture of
Asian and Australasian species.

5. • Bunaken at the northern tip of Sulawesi, claims to have seven times
more genera of coral than Hawaii, and has more than 70% of all the
known fish species of the Indo-Western Pacific.
• Moreover, there are over 3,500 species living in Indonesian waters,
including sharks, dolphins, manta rays, turtles, morays, cuttlefish,
octopus and scorpionfish, compared to 1,500 on the Great Barrier Reef
and 600 in the Red Sea.
• Tulamben Bay in Bali boasts the wreck of the 120 meter (400 ft) US
Army commissioned transport vessel, the Liberty. divers.
• The Coral Triangle is the heart of the world's coral reef biodiversity,
making Raja Ampat quite possibly the richest coral reef ecosystems in
the world.

The Tukang Besi Islands ( WAKATOBI ISLANDS )
There are five main inhabited islands — Wanci, Kambode,
Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko —
The chain of islands is adjacent to one of the largest and
most biologically diverse coral reef systems in Indonesia.
In July 1996 the Tukang Besi Archipelago was declared a
Marine National Park by the Directorate General of Forest
Protection and Nature. The Wakatobi Marine National Park
includes all the reefs and islands in the archipelago and
covers 1.39 million hectares (13 900 km2), which make it
the second largest designated marine protected area in
Indonesia (Stanzel and Newman 1997).

• Raja Ampat – West Papua
Remote quiet beach
Located in the Coral Triangle, the heart of the world’s
coral reef biodiversity, the seas around Raja Ampat
possibly hold the richest variety of species in the
world.
The area’s massive coral colonies show that its reefs
are resistant to threats like coral bleaching and
disease —threats that now jeopardize the survival of
corals around the world. In addition, Raja Ampat’s
strong ocean currents sweep coral larvae across the
Indian and Pacific Oceans to replenish other reef
ecosystems. Raja Ampat’s coral diversity, resilience
to threats, and ability to replenish reefs make it a
global priority for marine protection.
