February is about romance all around...from the Bridal Show to Valentine’s 6 Shop Call
Day.... to the official start of the wedding season in Abu Dhabi. Brides in the
capital are gearing up for their big day, from event bookings to selecting 7 Lifestyle
entertainment, to designing invitation accoutrements and preparing the
bridal trousseau. It’s all elaborate and frequently - yes - quite over the top. 8 My Fave Recipe
Perhaps we should remember that just like a wedding day, Valentine’s is but
a single date--a number circled on a calendar. Both are to be celebrated, but
                                                                                                                         9 City Bites
both are fleeting.
So as you go out to buy wonderful romantic gifts for your loved ones, 10 My Abu Dhabi

    Machboos
Salma Abdullah of UAE shares her
fave recipe with us this month:

    “Machboos is a traditional
    Arabian chicken and rice dish
which is very popular in the
Middle East and eaten in most
    Emirati homes. When I was
young, I helped my mother in
making it and now that I have
a family of my own, I make this
dish for them. My sons like it very
    much.”

    Ingredients:
    2 cups rice

MyABU DHABI What’s that funny smell?
As a long term resident of Abu Dhabi, I’ve lived in a few more unpleasant smells. This is wonderful news. It’s
buildings and found that there is a problem with bad such a shame that it is not possible to retrofit old

been told that the problem is caused by poor
plumbing in buildings. They’ve explained to me that
these unpleasant smells are caused by backflow and
locked-in moisture, which leads to moulds and mildew.
And I’ve found out that moulds and mildew can affect
respiration, especially among sensitive or asthmatic
people, and might even trigger allergy symptoms even
in people who don’t have allergies.

The good news (my fiancé is a practicing engineer and
has told me this) is that the introduction of new
building codes for Abu Dhabi will also cover the issue of
plumbing in all new construction—not just structural,
health and safety aspects, but also plumbing. Efficient
plumbing is an important issue for all of us as it will
not only ensure that water--and sewage I suppose-- is

Getting a taxi is next to impossible these days! I don’t mind waiting, at least not in the winter
months, but what really gets on my nerves is when people who have just arrived at the bus
stop hail a cab which has stopped for me. I have had my fair share of squabbles with complete
strangers because of such behavior. However things really get out of hand when a female is
involved. Men can’t argue with them nor make them see reason. Courtesy dictates for men to act
like gentlemen but it sounds like asking for too much. Especially when we are late for meetings
or interview appointments! Recently, I took a stand on the matter and refused to give up my

They’ve explained to me that these unpleasant smells are caused by backflow and locked-in moisture, which leads to moulds and mildew. And I’ve found out that moulds and mildew can affect respiration, especially among sensitive or asthmatic people, and might even trigger allergy symptoms even in people who don’t have allergies. The good news (my fiancé is a practicing engineer and has told me this) is that the introduction of new building codes for Abu Dhabi will also cover the issue of plumbing in all new construction—not just structural, health and safety aspects, but also plumbing. Efficient plumbing is an important issue for all of us as it will not only ensure that water--and sewage I suppose-- is properly routed in (for water) and out (water and sewage) of your apartment, but that there will be no Five Reasons You Should Definitely Go See the White Lions in Al Ain Zoo: 1. • 21. F NABOUNGIFE UN YTHI T L Getting a taxi is next to impossible these days! I don’t mind waiting, at least not in the winter months, but what really gets on my nerves is when people who have just arrived at the bus stop hail a cab which has stopped for me. I have had my fair share of squabbles with complete strangers because of such behavior. However things really get out of hand when a female is involved. Men can’t argue with them nor make them see reason. Courtesy dictates for men to act like gentlemen but it sounds like asking for too much. Especially when we are late for meetings or interview appointments! Recently, I took a stand on the matter and refused to give up my cab to a lady younger than myself. She made such a scene! I was forced to step back STOP because of which I missed an important meeting with international clients. Salem Abdullah What would you do if something like this happened to you? Would Over to You you give up your taxi or argue for it and how do you think this problem can be resolved? “I believe that authorities should introduce the queuing system for all taxi stops. This way no one would fight over who got there first and who deserves the ride.” Robin “This has happened to me but as a female I can definitely vouch for the fact that men are not always this courteous! I have been bumped out of a taxi or two after some man refused to budge from the front seat. I have no choice but to call cabs to ensure that I get one.” Magen T. “My suggestion to the guys is that they should stop being such pushovers and maybe if there were queues such a problem wouldn’t be there in the first place.” Mohammed Baqar “This happens to me everyday! It’s a common problem in Abu Dhabi. I think the authorities are increasing the number of taxis as almost everyone I know has been complaining about this for quite sometime. Frankly speaking, my advice is: Take the bus!” Hammad Badar Send your stories to mystory@abudhabitempo.com 21 www.abudhabitempo.com

Lifecoach Anger Management By Samantha Davis Most of us know (from experience, I might Timeout: Allowing time for your temper to diffuse is the best solution to keep you from setting out on a killing add) that controlling one's temper is no walk spree in broad daylight! As the experts say, count to 10 in the park. It is a daunting task, especially and let it go! Practise relaxation techniques like when the other person has rubbed you the meditation and yoga. In the long run, they really help! wrong way, pushed all your buttons and set My Space: Get some space between yourself and the the nerves in your temples throbbing out of other person so you have room to vent out your control! My suggestion is to just breathe... frustrations. If you still can't contain your anger, count relax and read these tips to get your mind off longer, go to 20. the negative thoughts and back in Express Anger: Yes, you've read it correctly. No, it does 'happy-land': not mean we are green-lighting your attempts to harm the other person in any way. It just means that you should try and sort out the issue by conversing with the other party in a calm manner. Explain to them what triggered your response and how to avoid such situations in the future. Think Healthy: Turn the negative into a positive. Step outside for a brisk walk, run, swim, play ball or grab a quick cold drink. Exercising might provide an outlet for the emotional upset. It might assist you in clearing your head. Identify the Problem: Try keeping all your focus on the reason of the conflict in opinion. Otherwise it will just lead to more bickering and name-calling. Discuss. Discuss. Discuss 'I' Statements: Don't play the blame-game. It doesn't really help resolve anything. Use 'I' statements like, "I am upset because you promised to help me with this presentation" instead of, "You should have helped me with this presentation!" Let Go: It is considered bad form to hold a grudge when all has been said and done. Forgiveness helps you more than it helps the other person. Its tells you that you are mature enough to handle your emotions and are in complete control of your temper. Humor Helps: Beware! There is a fine line between humor and sarcasm. While humor can diffuse a potentially explosive situation, sarcasm can set it off like a time-bomb. So choose your words wisely. 24 Tempo February 2010
