A community is a group of independent people living and growing together in the same place with similar characteristics, interests and goals in mind. Each person has their own personal values and opinions that they bring to the table, but they can find a common ground that allows them to succeed cohesively.
Why is community important to the classroom?
A classroom is made up of students with many different cultures, backgrounds, and ideas, all kids with the similar goal to learn and be successful, and eventually graduate with a diploma and a promising future.

If students don’t relate to one another based on their common goals, or don’t feel safe in the classroom environment, they won’t be motivated to contribute, and ultimately, won’t be motivated to learn(Picture of two kids with space in between will separate them)

We watch music competitions on Tv, listen to music on the radio and through our headphones, and we even hear soundtracks to movies, and background music in shopping malls and elevators.

How does music affect the community in the classroom?
Music can help students relate to one another in their common interests of music tasteIt evokes emotions that relax students, allowing them to feel comfortable enough to participate and work togetherMusic can also help teachers break down barriers of formality while still maintaining a sense of professionalism, allowing them to effectively communicating the content and information in a way that engages studentsMusic is such a huge part of society outside the classroom environment. By incorporating it into the curriculum, teachers can help students work together to draw connections between what they’re learning and their everyday lives outside of school.
Now let’s think of a specific example where music could benefit the building of community in a classroom. One of the best places community and music could benefit learning would be an ELL classroom
ELL- What is ELL?English Language LearnersPeople who enter into the American education system, who don’t know how to speak English, but are expected to participate and learn just as well as the other students in their main stream classesThe ELL programs in public schools provide these students teachers trained specifically to help these students meet the oral, listening, and written proficiency standards required by the government.
Students come from many different cultures and speak many different languages, and some find themselves in learning environments that they never would have encountered in schools back home. (flash pictures of different kids from different cultures)
ELL students spend time, grow, and learn together, with the similar interest and goal of learning enough English to be able to succeed in their mainstream classes, with the end goal of graduating the program and eventually graduating with a diploma.

In order for students to build confidence in their language skills, they need to feel comfortable in the classroom environmentIf students don’t feel safe in the classroom environment, they won’t be motivated to participate, and ultimately won’t be motivated to learn.
Students can share different styles of music from their own culture, allowing them to embrace each other’s differences and relate on a common interest musicMusic can be played by people of all different cultures, because the notes are the same in every languageMusic helps teacher break down barriers of self-consciousness while boosting confidence at the same time, creating an environment where people can relate.
