The term Data Governance continues to mean different things to different people.Here at Embarcadero we have invested a lot of time listening to our customers and meeting with analysts to understand what the biggest challenges are in running a Data Governance programme. ...and it appears that the biggest challenge by far is simplifying knowing how to get started and how to make meaningful progress.Organisations of all sizes are spending significant amounts of money by hiring system integrators and management consultants to design and implement a Data Governance solution and after many months of effort there is frequently very little to show for often sizeable investments. In the course of this session we will show you how you can make meaningful progress with a Data Governance strategy using ER/Studio starting today. Our goal is always to raise the bar in your data modelling and data governance initiatives. This session is not all presentation slides. We will spend a significant amount of the time going through a demonstration of ER/Studio XE3 showing a range of widely encountered data governance scenarios. Today we are going to talk about ER/Studio and how it is used as part of your Data Governance strategy
So, let’s go over the definition of Data Governance. Data Governance can be seen as a fairly highly and abstract term to most people.Data Governance as a definition is a set of policies, rights and accountabilities for managing information to identify and improve it’s business value. The mission is to provide reliable, relevant information supporting enterprise compliance, controls and decision making.The benefits are to increase revenue, decrease costs and reduce risk.Add more here from the other slides. (for Mark Barringer) So, let me dive a little deeper about what we mean by reliable and relevant information. By relevant data we mean accessibility, how readily can the data be located and accessed?Comprehensibility , can the users understand and use the data?Credibility – do the users trust the data and also trust the sources and integrity of the production process?And validity – does the data measure what it is intended to measure? What does reliability of data actually mean?We can talk about Availability of the data – are data sources reliable and persistent?Timeliness of the data – we mean punctuality , that is the length of time between the business event creating the data and the readiness of data publication. That is the time to be ready for business use.Completeness of the data – we need to make sure that there is no missing data.Consistancy - whether the data is similar on repeated measurements and is comparable over timeAnd Coherance of data – we need to be able to show that data can be reconciled and audited.
Historically many DG efforts have been ineffective. In many, if not most organisations there is a substantial gap between the strategies and abstractions of the Data Governance initiatives, represented by the blue box on the slide, and the execution focused activities of IT as represented by the orange box on the slide. Data Governance is a kind of change management but all too often its characterised by, binders on shelves, no buy-in and no one taking any notice.
BUILD the Slide 5 builds through to Where? So, we at Embarcadero have seen many of our customers have this issue and our response is to create the Enterprise Information Map.An Enterprise Information Map is a method of classifying enterprise information by meaning, business relevance, usage and authority. Putting data governance principles into practice requires communication and coordination. Making enterprise information assets discoverable and comprehensible drives utilization and quality today and enables fact-based planning for tomorrow’s governance initiatives. The Enterprise Information Map puts data – no matter where it is in your organization – in context. It helps answer several important questions to ensure that data is both relevant and reliable. What does the data mean? In terms of Business names and business definitions.Why do we have this data? What applications and processes does it support? How important is this data?How do we manage and use this data? Is it sensitive, synchronized, retained? How is it best used to answer important business questions?Who uses this data? What organizations and business functions depend on this data? Who is responsible for its quality?And finally but most importantly Where is this data? Where does it physically reside in our IT infrastructure?
So, why did we have to take a closer look at Data Governance? We know the practice and technologies of Information Management are being strained by unprecedented growth in Enterprise data. Many of us are aware of The Challenge Mobile and cloud adoption are driving huge increases in Volume, Velocity and Variety of Enterprise dataWe are seeing a 30-50% year on year data growth and IDC has projected a tenfold increase global data by 2020 It is necessary to manage this data and provide more business value to retain the competitive edge.Further, as we know, it is becoming increasingly important for the business to comply with standards and regulations.One of the most pressing challenges is all to obtain reductions in IT spend and for IT to become more efficient. The Current State, as mentioned previously, some organisations have invested heavily in Governance consulting but with little return. Other organisations just don’t know where to start. So we at Embarcadero have devised an approach we have built this concept of an Enterprise Information Map.The Enterprise Information Map is a metadata foundation which enables collaboration, comprehension and synchronization.The approach promotes standardization of tooling that leverages that metadata to drive quality, efficiency and effectiveness. Forrester analysts have estimated that enterprises use only 5% of their available data to derive insight into their business.So if organizations can increase that 5% number it will definitely mean that data can be used as competitive advantage.The Embarcadero advantage is clear – if you don’t have the experience or the product line, you can’t play Let’s take a closer look at Data Governance and why it’s hard to get started
We previously looked at this gap between the strategic data governance polices and processes and the tactical execution at the IT layer. The Embarcadero tools fill this gap by providing the data Architecture which is critical to fill this gap and provides assessment, planning, standards and alignment for the Data Governance program. Two important further layers are Metadata Governance and the Enterprise Information Map These two layers allow for metadata syndication. Metadata Syndication puts that map to work, adding metadata and governance awareness to workflows across the Embarcadero product portfolio and the implementation lifecycle.So, how does this create value?The Metadata governance provides the essential collaboration layer to the Enterprise Information Map so that all stakeholders – the Data Architect, the Data Steward, the Data Subject Matter Expert, the Data Analyst and the Governance team are able to share and collaborate on the information.So what are the Value Propositions?For data architects the syndication part of the data Governance platform provides huge benefits.With other peer data architects they can benefit through the re-use, consistency and coordination of the data architecture diagramsAnd with business analysts and developers, data architects can review, approve and coordinate. On the Governance and Collaboration front, the data steward, the data Subject matter expert and the governance team on metadata can author data assets collaboratively and have business review and approval processes.For information management professionals the benefits are discoverability, increase in comprehension, quality and access to policy. The data analyst benefits again from discoverability, clarity of definitions, lineage, and security. So, we relate everything to data, to the actual tables and columns. Not only do we make it easy to get this information we allow you to easily walk up and down the stack. So if you are looking at a governance policy you can see the application it applies to and you see which tables actually participates, or likewise if you are looking at a table in some system you can easily see which policies govern the data (or process or application or… whatever). We can see from the slide that Embarcadero tools fit into the Data Governance platform as follows and we will see some of these in action in the demonstration.ER/Studio Data and Business Architect provides the tool for data architecture, the ER Portal and forthcoming ER Connect provide the tools to view and manage the Enterprise Information mapEmbarcadero are also a tools provider for multiple device Application development with RAD Studio and Database management with DB Powerstudio. These also fit neatly into an organisations Data Governance Strategy. Let’s take a look in some more detail:

Many people have seen some kind of maturity level model which describes the level of maturity of Data Governance efforts in Enterprises.We particularly see the Scoping phase as a very important phase within Data Governance and the key for Data Governance success.This phase is where you plan and scope your Data Governance efforts.The slide shows increasing levels of Data Governance maturity, top to bottom and the scoping phase is shown in red.For each of these different levels of maturity Embarcadero can provide product features which are relevant to aspects of that phase.In terms of discovery and publishing data we are able to Reverse engineer and document data lineage from ETL sources. We have the repository for collaboration and scaliability.The ER portal has been enhanced in the latest product release and Custom Data types feature allow us to perform comprehensive reverse engineering. Additonal features as we move throuight the levels of the maturity model; we have the Data Dictionary and Naming standards templates which allows for standardisation and reuse of assets.We are able to establish role and security centre groups where we can replicate the Data Governance groups with the data model repository. The Enterprise Data Dictionary and capability of Inferring domains promote re-use of rationalised data.The Universal Mappings allow businesses to connect all process and data as one end to end mapping. For continuous improve we can ensure that Data Governance initiative is widely adopted through the enterprise deployment of the web based ER Portal to ensure collaboration. So, to summarise I have discussed Data Governance and the maturity level model, provided an insight into how the Embarcadero Information Map helps achieve success and now I would like to hand over to first,last name from company name who will run through the ER/Studio product suite and show you how we can achieve these benefits today.
ER/Studio PlatformER/Studio XE3 9.5 was officially launched on January 22ndIt was available to existing customers for upgrades in December.The release primarily contains enhancements to the Data Architect, Portal and Repository, key components for creating the Enterprise Information Map as well as for Metadata governance and collaboration
