About Sami…
Sami Blackford, founder of Freyaluna Skincare, one of the key brands at
Adore Naturals. Sami is a natural skincare expert and passionate about the
benefits of avoiding chemicals in your daily beauty routine. All Freyaluna
Skincare products are made using natural ingredients and are handmade
with love in Wrexham, Wales. You can browse her range of cleansers, toners,
moisturises, soaps and more at: www.AdoreNaturals.co.uk/brands-freyaluna.
Did you know that the average woman uses around twelve beauty products and toiletries in a day… cleanser,
toner, moisturiser, soap/shower gel/exfoliating scrub, body lotion, foundation, mascara, eye shadow, lip
stick, blusher, etc?
This can expose you to up to 175 different chemicals. It has been estimated that women can absorb around
2kg of chemicals through their skin each year!

Watching what you put on your skin is absolutely as important as watching what you eat. I found a study once
that proved that eating lipstick would be better for you than putting it on your lips. That way, at least you have the
digestive enzymes to help absorb it.
Maybe it’s time for you to clean up your act and turn over a new leaf. Ditch those potentially harmful products in
favour of Mother Nature’s gorgeousness!
What’s really lurking in your toiletries
Cupboard?
You may be surprised at some of the ingredients
manufacturers put in the “skincare” products you
use every day. First up, lets take a look at some of
the well-known ingredients…
Detergents (sodium lauryl sulphate,
cocamidopropyl betaine, ammonium lauryl
sulphate, cocamide DEA, cocamide MEA) – cause
skin irritation. They can promote the formation of
cancer-causing substances known as ‘nitrosamines’
in products during storage. Detergents are found in
shampoo, body wash, shower gel, bubble bath,
liquid soaps.
7. Now let’s delve a little deeper, into the less well-known ingredients…
Bacteriocides (triclosan, benzalkonium chloride, chlorohexidrine) – kill bacteria, but can also react with water to
form chloroform gas. If inhaled in large quantities this can cause depression, liver problems and cancer. Can
cause skin irritation. Bacteriocides are found in anti-bacterial face wash, toothpaste and mouth wash.
Aluminium (aluminium chlorohydrate, aluminium zirconium) -is a neurotoxin linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
May also contribute to heart and lung disease and fertility problems. Aluminium is found in deodorants and
make-up products.
Phthalates (dibutyl phthalate, diethylhexyl phthalate) – these are hormone-disrupting plasticisers that ‘fix’ a
product to the skin. Can cause damage to the liver, lungs and kidneys. May affect fertility and foetal
development. Phthalates are found in hairspray, nail varnish, and perfumed products.

Mineral oils (found on ingredients lists as parafinnum liquidum,
petrolatum) – these form a layer on top of the skin that doesn’t allow
the skin breathe. They are skin irritants, allergens, and potential
carcinogens (substances that cause cancer). Mineral oils are found
in face and body lotions, baby oils, lipstick.
Fragrances (parfum) -parfum is a mixture of dozens of synthetic
chemicals that are linked to asthma, skin irritation, nausea, mood
changes, depression, lethargy, irritability and memory lapses. These
fragrances are found in most fragranced products.
8. A Closer Look at Sodium Lauryl Sulphate
What products contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)?
Most skincare or personal care products sold by "non-natural" brands are
highly likely to contain SLS. These include:
• Shampoo
• Bubble bath (including baby bath)
• Shower gel
• Toothpaste
• Facial wash
• Shaving foam
Is SLS really bad for you?
Given that SLS is such a common ingredient in skincare and cosmetics, you'd
be forgiven for assuming that SLS isn't really bad for you. But although SLS is
a good cleanser, it is extremely harsh and strips the skin and scalp of its
natural oils. Problems associated with Sodium Lauryl Sulphate include:
• Dry skin and Dermatitis
• Eczema
• Mouth ulcers
• General skin irritation, spots and soreness

Skincare Ingredients to Avoid: SLS
9. SLS can also be a severe irritant to people
with skin conditions like eczema and
psoriasis. As with all chemicals, the more
often you use products that contain SLS,
the higher the chance that your skin will
react and start to become dry, itchy and
sore. So if you use several products each
day that include SLS or regularly have
long soaks in an SLS-infused bubble bath,
you could be doing your skin more harm
than good.

What exactly is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate?
Sodium lauryl sulphate is actually an ester of sulphuric acid. SLS is a common ingredient in industrial
detergents like car wash soap, engine degreasers and floor cleaners - mostly thanks to its supreme oil-
stripping powers and low cost. It's surprisingly (or worryingly!) common in skincare products.
Why do skincare companies use Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)?
Why would anyone use a chemical used for cleaning factory floors in shampoos or shower gels? Good
question! The first reason is that SLS produces a good lather - or in other words, SLS is very good at
making lots of foam and bubbles. Because consumers think lots of bubbles means a cleansing product
is doing a good job, cosmetic companies load-up skincare products with SLS. Of course, Sodium Lauryl
Sulphate is cheap and readily available too.

Skincare Ingredients to Avoid: Parabens
A Closer Look at Parabens
First of all, what exactly are they?
Parabens are synthetic chemicals that are widely used in beauty
products like make-up, moisturisers and hair products. Their
presence in these products mean that they are easily absorbed
through the skin and into the body's circulatory system.
That doesn't sound good!
No it doesn't. And it gets worse, although only a small
percentage of people suffer with direct paraben allergies,
recent research suggests that the damage they can do is not just
skin-deep. Parabens are xenoestrogens, which means they
mimic the oestrogen that occurs naturally in the body. As well
as causing possible problems with fertility and puberty, studies
have suggested that the properties of these parabens can be
linked with the development of cancer - particularly breast
cancer. Though nothing has yet been proven, many scientists
advise skincare users to seek products that do not contain these
chemicals.
11. So why do so many skincare companies use them?
Parabens have been used for decades in foods, cosmetics and skincare as they are fungicidal, antibacterial
and act as a preservative for products that contain them. They are also cheaper than many natural
alternatives. What is worrying is that many people will not even be aware that they are applying these
chemicals to their skin, which then absorbs them.
10
Find all our latest offers at
www.AdoreNaturals.co.uk
What's the alternative?
Luckily there are plenty of alternatives. As the
awareness of parabens and their possible side-
effects grows, so does the demand for products that
use safe ingredients. Remember to check bottles and
ingredient lists for names such as methylparaben,
ethylparaben and propylparaben and E-Numbers
such as E216, E218 and R214, as you will want to
avoid these. Of course, you can rest assured that all
Adore Naturals products are paraben free and
contain the finest natural ingredients.
12. Treating Skin Conditions… Naturally
Do you suffer from any skin conditions
like eczema, acne or even just very oily
or dry skin?
If so, then a natural solution may be best
for you. Mainstream cosmetics and over-
the-counter treatments are likely to be
packed with chemicals, which could only
make conditions worse..

13. Eczema
One in twelve adults and one in five children suffer with eczema - a dry skin condition which causes
irritation and pain, and can really get you down. Sadly, many people find that prescription and over-the-
counter creams don't provide the long-term relief they are looking for, as they cause side-effects and can
actually make the condition worse. If you’d like to try a more natural approach, there are loads of simple
changes you can make to daily life that may help to alleviate the pain and itching of eczema-prone skin.
Up the Nutrients
Nutritionists suggest that maintaining a healthy diet can have a really positive effect on your eczema.
Eating more raw fruit and vegetables is recommended and experts state that these should be organic to
avoid any allergens entering the body. Nuts, seeds and oily fish are rich in amino and fatty acids, which are
thought to help alleviate the symptoms of eczema. Remember to drink plenty of water as this will help keep
your entire body hydrated and moisturised inside and out.
Cut out dairy
Eczema is generally thought to be an allergic condition. Some nutritionists believe that dairy could be a
contributing factor to the allergic reactions that cause the skin irritation associated with eczema. Though
it may not work for everyone, many people have found that their eczema entirely cleared up after
changing to a dairy free diet. There are now so many great alternatives to dairy, with butter, cheese, milk
and ice cream alternatives commonly available. If the usual soy and goat’s milk aren't to your taste, try
almond or hazelnut milk instead. These are really tasty and now easy to find in the supermarket here in the
UK. Turn to page 28 for a fab dairy-free recipe.

14. 13
Play it Cool
Having lots of hot baths and showers can make eczema much worse as it
dries out the skin and causes painful cracks. Instead run a bath or shower
that is as cool as you can enjoy and limit yourself to one bath or shower a
day if possible. Also, try to avoid shower gels or body washes that contain
chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), as these are known to
dry out skin and aggravate skin conditions. Synthetic fragrances are a
no-no too - look for un-scented natural skincare products like the 100%
natural Fragrance Free Soap from The Celtic Herbal Company. Fragrance Free Soap (110g)
Celtic Herbal

No, not naked! But do make sure you only wear clothing made of natural fibres, as synthetic materials can
irritate skin. So check the labels and aim for clothing that is 100% cotton, linen, wool or silk.
Natural Moisturisers for Eczema
The best way to avoid or soothe the raw, irritated skin caused by eczema is to keep skin well moisturised.
We think it's really important to stay away from products that contain synthetic ingredients and
fragrances, as these can cause further irritation and lead to build-ups of toxins in the body - yuck! Topical
steroids are often prescribed by doctors and medical professionals, but many people have concerns about
using them long-term. Thankfully though, natural skincare offers a safe and healthy alternative to
steroids. At Adore Naturals, we sell a number of natural moisturisers for eczema.

16. Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, you will know how much it can get you down. Oilier complexions tend to be more
prone to acne breakouts and can produce unwanted shine. This can really knock confidence, especially in
teenagers, whom are much more likely to experience oily skin. There seem to be all sorts of solutions out
there, advertised on TV and in glossy magazines- but do they really work? We think that a natural skincare
routine is best, so here are five simple steps to beat oily skin...
Read the label
There are whole aisles of skincare product in the
average drugstore, offering miracle solutions for
problem skin. However, if you were to look at the
labels on the backs of these products, you would see
that they are usually packed with chemicals that
you can't even pronounce! Don't be fooled by some
products that claim to be natural. Greenwashing is
unfortunately rife in the skincare industry, so
always check the label.
Stop scrubbing
Likewise, while gentle exfoliation can be
brilliant for your skin, over-exfoliating and
using harsh scrubs and facial brushes can
worsen excess oiliness. Stripping the sensitive
facial skin of oil can cause the sebaceous glands
to go into overdrive, producing even more
sebum. Facial blotting sheets may seem a quick
solution to unwanted shine, but using these can
result in pores that are clogged with dirt;
causing nasty spots.

17. Bare-Faced
Having a quiet day in? Then go make-up free!
Sometimes we get into such a routine that we apply
make-up every morning without thinking. Your skin is
an amazing organ and going without make-up for 24
hour once a week can allow it 'breathe', repairing itself
and ridding itself of the toxins that can cause clogged
pores. If this just isn't possible, be sure to remove all
make-up in the evening as soon as you can. A face
wipe won't cut it either- a natural face wash is best.
Keep it Clean
It’s not all about keeping your skin squeaky clean!
It's really important to keep everything that
comes into contact with the face washed too.
Anything like pillow cases, make-up brushes,
hats, scarves and towels can harbour bacteria and
dirt that can undo all your hard work, so be sure
to wash them as often as you can.
Feed Your Skin
You may feel like applying lotions and facial
oils could make your oily skin worse, but if you
choose carefully this certainly won't be the
case. Keeping your skin moisturised and
nourished with natural skin-kind ingredients
will help to balance the excess sebum that
causes an oily complexion.

18. Cellulite
If you, like so many others are concerned
about those dimply bottoms and thighs,
don't panic! You are not alone… 90% of
women and 10% of men have cellulite and
though entirely natural and very common,
it can really knock your confidence. The
battle with cellulite needn’t be exhausting
or expensive, there are plenty of natural
ways to smooth the skin. Here are our 4
cellulite-busting top tips.
17

www.AdoreNaturals.co.uk
19. Top Tip #1
- Drink water
Yes, it really is that simple.
Though there are many
different theories behind the
cause of cellulite, it is
generally thought to be a sign
that toxins are present in your
body. Drinking plenty of
water is one of the best ways
to detox and cleanse your
system- and has countless
other benefits too! Experts
recommend that we should
try to drink around 2 litres of
water a day.
Top Tip #2
– Exercise and eat well
A combination of regular cardio and
resistance workouts is perhaps the best way
to banish cellulite. Cardio exercise boosts
circulation, which promotes lymphatic
drainage. A clear and well-functioning
lymphatic system helps to carry the fats and
toxins that cause cellulite out of your body.
If you add resistance training to your
workout, muscles become more pronounced
and skin becomes more toned - so wave
goodbye to that orange-peel skin!
A low-fat diet, rich in detoxifying foods
such as garlic, beetroot and sea-vegetables
will reduce the build-up of body fat and
toxins that cause cellulite.

20. Top Tip #3 –
Moisturise
Keep hydrated on the outside
as well as inside. It is
important to use a natural
moisturiser as your body can
absorb toxins present in
creams and lotions
containing chemical
ingredients. An invigorating
massage using your favourite
moisturiser or body oil is also
a great way of stimulating
the lymphatic system and
dispersing build-ups of fat
cells.
Top Tip #4 –
Brush
Keeping your lymphatic system
healthy has so many benefits. A
great way to drain sluggish
lymphs is to use a firm, dry body
brush, especially on areas
affected by cellulite. Before your
bath or shower brush your skin
in firm but gentle strokes
towards your heart. This simple
act stimulates the lymphatic
system, encouraging the
removal of all those cellulite-
causing nasties.

21. Dry and Itchy Skin
Itchy skin can be caused by all sorts of things, from car fumes to washing powder. Sadly it's often
impossible to avoid these irritants in our modern lifestyle - but there are things you can do without
resorting to over-the-counter creams. If you suffer with annoying patches of itchy skin, why not try
out some of these natural treatments?
Avoid Hot Baths
Very hot baths can be the worst thing
for itchy skin. The heat can dry out
the skin causing it to become even
more tight and sensitive. Instead, run
a bath that is as cool as you can enjoy
and use a fragrance-free soap.
Synthetic perfumes and fragrances
can cause further irritation, so avoid
at all costs! As well as being
wonderfully soothing, a cool bath
before bed helps to wash away any
nasty irritants that your skin will
have collected throughout the day.
Lemons
When life gives you lemons,
use them on your skin! That's
right, lemon is a natural anti-
inflammatory and the juice
of a fresh lemon can be
applied directly to the skin to
relief itches. Just be careful
not to apply it to areas where
you might have broken the
skin through scratching.
Ouch!

22. Essential Oils
At Adore Naturals, we love
essential oils! Each one has
unique properties and help
to relieve countless
ailments. Chamomile,
Calendula, Geranium,
Lavender, Peppermint and
Rosemary oils all possess
qualities that relieve
itching naturally. You’ll
find these essential oils in
most skincare products on
Adore Naturals. For a
home-made remedy, a few
drops of essential oils can
also be added to your bath
water.
Itchy Skin in Children
If find your little-one
keeps scratching until
they make themselves
sore, a natural solution is
best to keep their delicate
skin free from harm.
Creams that contain
ingredients such as shea
butter, calendula and aloe
vera with gently soothe.
If your child scratches
through the night, pop a
pair of soft gloves on
them so they won't do
their skin damage as they
sleep.

23. Nature's Best
Look out for creams that are made with natural ingredients as
these won't irritate your skin. Look out for products
containing beeswax, coconut oil and cocoa and shea butters as
these are some of the best ingredients that Mother Nature has
to offer for itchy skin.
Vinegar
It may sound strange, but vinegar can be a
very successful way of alleviating
uncomfortable itching. Topical
application of Apple Cider Vinegar is
known to provide great relief for sore
skin. A mixture of one part water to one
part vinegar can be used to bathe affected
areas or added to bath water.

24. Pregnancy Skin
Avoid chemicals-
When you are pregnant, you share
everything with your baby. This includes
what you put into and onto your body.
When you use skincare that contains
chemical or synthetic ingredients, your
skin absorbs these. Skincare containing
chemicals such as SLS and parabens can
also cause dry and irritated skin. Instead,
try to use natural skincare with
nourishing ingredients that your body
will thank you for.
Pregnancy is one of the most wonderful
times in a woman's life but it doesn't
come without its disadvantages. Enjoy
your pregnancy by looking after yourself
and your skin the natural way.

25. Precious cargo-
Your bump is going to need a lot of care while your
baby grows- it is doing a very important job! Why not
try a natural massage oil, which when applied will help
your skin stay moisturised and retain its elasticity. This
will in turn help to soothe and prevent stretch marks.
The Beautiful Bump Massage Oil from The
Aromatherapy Company (£20.40) on Adore Naturals is
made with the finest natural and organic ingredients,
including rosehip and frankincense oil and is just the
ticket for beautiful pregnancy skin.
Dreaded dry skin-
Due to the hormonal changes that happen during
pregnancy, your skin can lose a lot of its natural oil.
This often results in patches of dry and sore skin. To
hydrate pregnant skin, try taking a relaxing bath (with
lukewarm not hot water) infused with a natural
moisturising bath soak and avoid using harsh soaps
containing chemicals as these lead to further dryness
of the skin. Use a natural pregnancy-safe moisturiser
and a weekly natural face-mask to maintain a healthy
glow.

26. Spot the difference-
Spots are also common when pregnant due to changes in
hormones. However, it is important not to use spot treatments that
are recommended for young or teenage skin as these often contain
ingredients such as salicylic acid which can be harmful to your
unborn baby. Instead, try to maintain a healthy diet and drink
plenty of water. Use a natural non-abrasive cleanser and avoid
using cloths and flannels may cause irritation and development of
further spots. Again, keep skin well hydrated with a natural
moisturiser.

Look after yourself-
Pregnancy is hard work so make sure you take good care of yourself
and your little one. After all, you won’t have a lot of time to
yourself once they arrive! Eat well, take gentle exercise and relax
often. Relieve stress with a naturally infused bath and remember to
treat your feet. A foot soak containing natural peppermint is a
wonderful way to unwind after a long day on your feet and will
leave you feeling as if you're walking on air!
Remember, you must always check with your doctor or consultant
before using any products containing essential oils when
pregnant.

28. Skin Superhero: Rosehips
We are used to seeing rosehips brightening up the
hedgerows in the autumn and winter months but did
you know that rosehips are wonderfully good for you,
inside and out?
How do rosehips benefit the skin?
Rosehips are best known and loved in skincare for their
miraculous anti-ageing properties. Rosehip oil or Rosa
Mosqueta is extracted from the seeds of rosehips, and is
rich in antioxidants, vitamins and omega oils.
Used in skincare products such as moisturisers and
facial oils, rosehip oil can significantly reduce the
appearance of blemishes, scars, dark circles - not to
mention those those fine-lines and wrinkles.
Rosehip oil is also very easily absorbed, so products
containing rosehip oil can be applied before make-up in
the mornings. If you're after soft, smooth skin with a
natural glow....products containing rosehip oil are the
way to go!

29. How do rosehips benefit health?
Rosehips are packed full of vitamin C, as well as A, D and E, which means they are great for your immune system.
Rosehips work as an anti-inflammatory inside and out, so some traditional remedies use rosehips as an alternative
to over-the-counter painkillers and anti-inflammatory pills.
Across cultures, there has been research into the use of rosehip to treat conditions including arthritis, melanoma
and even diabetes. Drinking rosehip tea or making tasty treats like rosehip syrup can be a great way to introduce
rosehips to your diet.

30. Skin Super Hero: Pomegranate Oil
Pomegranate Oil is one of the many luxurious
natural ingredients found in our range of
skincare at Adore Naturals and is hailed for its
many cosmetic and health benefits. But what
exactly is Pomegranate oil and what good does it
do for your skin?
Punica Granatum
Punica granatum is the Latin name for the
pomegranate. Originating in Iran, it is an exotic
fruit that we are now all used to seeing in the
supermarket. Unspectacular on the outside, it is
only when you cut these delightful fruits open that
you see the beauty within. The distinctive ruby-red
fruit has a unique, delicious flavour and was
traditionally used in cooking, dyes and medicine.
The precious oil is extracted from the fruit's many
seeds and is golden-yellow in colour.
The Benefits
Pomegranates themselves are thought to have many
health benefits. The edible seeds, each surrounded by a
juicy pulp are extremely high in fibre, vitamin C and
micro-nutrients. Therefore, eating the fruit or drinking
its juice is known to be beneficial for the digestive and
immune systems and for general well-being.

Acid, giving the oil powerful anti-inflammatory
properties.
Research also suggest that pomegranate oil works as
an effective treatment for ageing skin. The anti-
ageing qualities associated with Punicic Acid are
believed to assist in the regeneration of cells. This
regenerative effect results in reduced appearance of
wrinkles and ageing of the skin.

We asked some of our customers and fans why they love natural skincare and here are just a few of the
fab answers we got:
33. Just Add Water: Easy Ways to Up Your H2O Intake
You may have noticed a bit of a theme in this eBook-
we’re always recommending that you drink more
water! Well, there’s a reason for that… it’s SO good for
you. Just by drinking a little extra water every day,
you could see some amazing changes in your body
and well-being. Amongst many benefits, water can
help to:
• Plump and moisturise the skin
• Reduce the appearance of cellulite, dark eye circles
and fine lines and wrinkles
• Boost energy levels
• Beat Spots, blemishes and pimples
• Aid Weight loss
• Improve the function of the digestive system
• Improve condition of Hair, Teeth and Nails

34. If you find it difficult to drink the recommended 6-8 glasses of water a day, you may find some of the
following tips useful…
• Keep a jug of water in the fridge or ice cubes in
the freezer at all times- sometimes chilled water
is much more appealing than a glass straight out
of the tap. Perfect for hot days and meal times.
• Keep a bottle handy. Whether on a journey, at
work, home or on a shopping trip, it is important
to have water to hand. It is all to easy to tip away
glasses of water, but keeping a bottle with you will
help you monitor how much you have drunk.
• Using a straw can help you to drink more
(especially if you have sensitive teeth).
• If you are more of a hot-drinks person but trying
to cut down on the amount of caffeine you have,
try adding a little honey and lemon to a mug of
hot water or experiment with some herbal and
fruit teas.
• If you’re tap water has an unpleasant or heavily
treated taste, invest in a good water filter- much more
earth friendly than buying bottle water.
• If you are mad on fizzy drinks, sparkling or soda
water can be a great alternative on a night out (ask for
a twist of lime juice- yum!)
• Make drinking water part of your routine. Try to get
into the habit of drinking a glass when you wake up,
when you get to work and in all your breaks, it will
soon become second-nature.
• Hungry? You might be thirsty, sometimes its hard to
tell. If you find yourself reaching for a snack, first
drink a large glass of water.
• If your kids are fussy about drinking water, you could
try adding a little fruit juice.

35. Dairy-Free Recipe
A dairy-free diet may sound daunting but it has never been
easier to avoid the white-stuff. Though, as always,
improvements could be made, supermarkets are stocking more
free-from and vegan products than ever.
Children might be reluctant to accept a change in diet,
especially as it may seem that most treats are now off-limits. It
can be fairly simple to find alternatives for savoury dishes, but
you may be wondering how to meet a dairy-free sweet-need.
A quick search online will turn up plenty of recipes for dairy-
free cakes, biscuits and desserts and we’ve been getting
creative in the Adore Naturals kitchen too. The result? A moo-
free recipe, perfect for occasional treats and parties!
These chewy-gooey blondies are just as indulgent as they
sound- this recipe will make about 9 large blondies, or 16
kiddie-sized treats. This is a really quick and easy recipe that
children and adults alike will love!
If you or your child has eczema and have seen an improvement since cutting out-dairy, it may be that the skin
condition is worsened by a dairy intolerance or allergy.

37. Method
First off, preheat the oven to 180°c and line and grease a large square
tin using a little margarine or vegetable oil.
In a large bowl, cream the margarine and peanut butter until fully
blended and smooth. Then add the sugars a little at a time and mix in
the vanilla essence.
You can then add the beaten eggs (or substitute) a little at a time. The
use of brown sugar as well as caster will give the blondies the moistness
that makes them ‘gooey’. Beat this mixture until light and fluffy.
Again, a little at a time, add the plain flour, baking powder and salt,
then mix until you the mixture is thick but just about pourable. Finally,
chop or crush half of your dark chocolate bar and add to the mix. Pour
the mixture into your greased tin and push it into the corners so that
the mixture is level. The, pop it onto the middle tray of the oven and
bake for 20-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Leave to cool, and
then turn out and slice into squares- they can be whatever size you like.
Now for the icing; melt the remaining chocolate carefully in the
microwave or using in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. When
fully melted, stir in a little golden syrup and drizzle over the blondies
with a fork (this is the fun, messy bit… kids will love to help!).
Then, all that’s left is to enjoy!

39. Green Cleaning Solutions
If you aspire to a more natural or eco-friendly lifestyle, a great way to make a difference is to make little green
changes to the things you do every day. We already know the benefits of using natural skincare (there's
heaps!), but using natural cleaning products can be hugely beneficial to your skin an health too- as well as to
the environment! The best news? You can make these natural cleaners at home AND they won't break the bank.
Simply follow our natural cleaning tips for a greener household that gleams!
Change Your Shopping List
Become the Green Queen of Clean by crossing
those nasty chemical-laden brands off your
list. There are just a few things you will need to
stock up on to make your own cleaning
solutions that really work! Make space in your
cleaning cupboard for bicarbonate of soda,
white vinegar and lots of lemons! It is amazing
what these simple ingredients can do- we love
that these are all ingredients that we would
put in food- you can't say that about many
shop-bought products!

40. Let’s start in the kitchen...
After all, it is often the biggest job! If you have ever
used chemical-based oven cleaners, you will have
experienced first-hand just how unpleasant they
are. The fumes given off are enough to make you
choke, so we can't imagine what goes into them
Just as effective is a simple paste made using our
three ingredients. Add one part white vinegar to 6
parts bicarbonate of soda and mix to form a
crumbly paste. Then add a small squeeze of natural
washing up liquid (some natural brands can be
found in your local supermarket) and enough water
to form a runny (but paintable) mixture. Then,
simply paint this over your oven and trays, using a
paint brush.
It is best to leave this overnight and then rinse off
with a sponge and plenty of hot clean water. The
results will rival that of any chemical cleaner.
For tile, laminate and linoleum floors, mix equal parts
of hot water and white vinegar with a squeeze of
lemon juice. Amazingly, the vinegar cannot be
smelled once the floor has dried, and leaves floors
wonderfully clean and shiny.
A great way to clean and disinfect surfaces is with
citrus vinegar. To make your own, simply fill a jar
with white vinegar and the peeled rind of five lemons.
Leave this mixture to infuse for up to 2 weeks, then
dilute and add to a spray bottle for wonderfully zesty
surface cleaner.

TOP TIP:
Many people find micro-fibre cloths are the best for removing dirt and dust all
around the house. They can also stand up to plenty of hot washes and are so
much more environmentally friendly than wipes and disposable cloths. These all
end up in landfill and you'd be surprised how few of them are biodegradable.
41. 101 uses!
Homemade citrus vinegar is so versatile and can be used for all sorts of
jobs around the house. Diluted, it makes a great window cleaner (even
shop-bought glass cleaners use vinegar for a streak free shine) and can
be used to disinfect toys, bathtubs and high-chairs.
You can also add a small amount of the vinegar to the rinse cycle in your
washing machine. Surprisingly, vinegar works as a natural fabric
conditioner and will only leave a fresh lemony scent on your clothes.
Living Room and Bedrooms
Carpets can be difficult to clean, but using chemical cleaners can leave
toxic residues that can be harmful to pets and children. A great way to
kill bacteria and deeply clean rugs and carpets is to steam them- and
nothing more than good-old H2O is needed! If you don't have a steamer,
bicarbonate of soda is a great alternative to powdered cleaners.
If you have wooden floors, add a little lemon juice, vinegar and olive oil
to a bucket of hot water and use a mop for a clean floor with a barrier of
protection created by the olive oil.
Olive oil can also be used to make a wonderful eco-friendly furniture
polish. To do this, add equal parts water and olive oil to 2 parts vinegar
and mix in a blender. Add to a spray bottle and use a micro-fibre cloth
for best results.
