1. The Never Ending Story of Elizabeth and Darcy
Romantic fiction is considered one of the most liked and best selling categories in fiction books.
Arguably the most legendary couple ever to be written about and without question the relationship
we all attempt to achieve however never entirely do, is that of Mr and Mrs Darcy.
I imagine even Jane Austen herself couldn't have imagined the impact these two characters would
have to this day and that they would remain in people’s hearts and minds for always. One book,
one story was never ever going to satisfy.
Fortunately, a number of writers agreed with this sentiment and started to write what are frequently
referred to as “what if …?” stories. For example, what if Mr Bennet had passed away and
Elizabeth had accepted Mr Darcy's original marriage offer as a way to secure the future of the rest
of her family. Would their relationship have been as intense? Would she be able to put her feelings
to one side and marry him anyway?
There are many books written that generally stick to the essence of the classic story “Pride and
Prejudice”. The stories are retold in such a way as to keep all readers of romantic fiction novels
enthralled by the characters of Elizabeth and Darcy and even though many of the situations are
altered the characters remain more or less the same.
There are lots of romantic fiction authors today which continue to keep us enchanted by this
couple and despite moving away to some extent from the original story, Darcy and Elizabeth
always wind up together and very much in love. Let's face it, it would be heartbreaking to see them
getting divorced or perhaps worse, finding and marrying somebody else!
Some of the authors that have written a number of these books are Abigail Reynolds, Kara Louise
and Linda Berdoll, however the list of writers who've taken to rewriting almost certainly the most
romantic fiction story ever produced is getting longer by the day.
It's a shame that Austen did not create a sequel to Pride and Prejudice herself and letting us all in
on what happened to the Darcy’s after marriage as seen through her eyes, nevertheless there's
been a great number of them since. Aided by the growing popularity of “Fifty Shades of Grey”,
erotic fiction has even caught up with Elizabeth and Mr Darcy in “Fifty Shades of Mr Darcy”.
Darcy and Elizabeth engage in an incredibly passionate marriage in some of these romantic fiction
books but with minor twists in the storyline and the introduction of a number of new and different
2. characters into the world of the Darcy's, along with many of the old ones, these special novels are
extremely imaginative and enormously compelling page turners. It's impossible to become bored
with the numerous diverse storylines, events and characters which merge nicely to produce a
completely new version of an old story.
One of these romance fiction novels, Mr Darcy’s Voyage by Kara Louise, was chosen as my initial
forage into the world of Mr & Mrs Darcy, however if you prefer a lot more passion then you cannot
fail to enjoy Mr Darcy Takes a Wife. It's an untamed and passionate story produced by Linda
Berdoll which cannot help but induce you to read the continuation of the Darcy saga in Darcy &
Elizabeth, Nights and Days at Pemberley.
I've since read quite a few of these books of fiction, which I am calling “Darcy books" and am
totally hooked on this pairing and appreciate the excellent story telling or maybe I ought to say the
retelling by these writers. Many of these books bring to light a more loving and licentious side to
the Darcy's and then others keep up a more refined romantic liaison. Even so, they’ve all to date
been absolutely unputdownable.
In my considered opinion, many other books about The Darcy's should be produced as theirs is
without a doubt a story everlasting.
