“ You cannot teach a man
anything, you can only help
him find it within himself. ”
(Galileo Galilei)
Dear Readers,
are to be out of your mind? Or you just like to stick to the same patterns of
behavior all the time? Well, Students of grade X SMA Negeri 1 Genteng Banyuwangi
would like to present their English materials in a little bit different form. They
compose them into a magazine taste. Later we just call it Mag-book.
What is a Mag -book? Okay, it is actually a matter of designing the students`
English material based on syllabus into what we call `a magazine taste. ` The design
looks like a magazine – colorful, full of pictures, etc. Hopefully, the students will be
more excited to learn. Since we believe that pictures speak more loudly than words.
They get involved in designing the lay-out, the coloring, the editing process, and in
some extends, taking part in selecting the materials to learn. By so doing, the
learning materials will be easily and quickly understood by the students.
Surprisingly, they feel very enthusiastic in doing this great work.
Well, hopefully, this will be a great help for them to learn English.
Any sound criticism is welcome.

MY DAY AT THE BEACH
Last week my friend and I were bored after
three weeks of holidays, so we rode our bikes to
Smith Beach, which is only five kilometer from
where I live. When we arrived at the beach, we
were surprised to see there was hardly anyone
there. After having a quick dip in the ocean,
which was really cold, we realized one reason
there were not many people there. It was also
quite windy.
After we bought some hot chips at the
takeaway store nearby, we rode our bikes down
the beach for a while, on the hard, damp part of
the sand. We had the wind behind us and, before
we knew it, we were many miles down the
beach. Before we made the long trip back, we
decided to paddle our feet in the water for a
while, and then sit down for a rest. While we
were sitting on the beach, just chatting, it
suddenly dawned on us that all the way back, we
would be riding into the strong wind.
When we finally made it back home, we were
both totally exhausted! But we learned some
good lessons that day.

Structure of the text

: 1. Orientation
2. Events
3. Re-orientation

Genre of structure : using simple past
tense, past continuous, past perfect.

Recount text tells the reader a past event. It usually focuses on a
person’s past experience, so it usually uses the word “I” or “we”.
A recount text has three elements : orientation or setting, events and
re – orientation or concluding statement of the story. The orientation tells
the readers who was involved in the story, what happened, where the
story took place, and when it happened. The Events tell the sequence of
events. These are described in order. The re-orientation summaries the
event.

Activity 1
Last weekend, my friends and I went camping. We reached
the camping ground after we walked for about one and a half
hour from the parking lot. We built the camp next to a small
river. It was getting darker and colder, so we built a fire camp.
The next day, we spent our time observing plantation and insects
while the girls were preparing meals. In the afternoon we went to
the river and caught some fish for supper. at night, we held a fire
camp night. We sang, danced, read poetry, played magic tricks,
and even some of us performed a standing comedy.
On Monday, we packed our bags and got ready to go home, and
weafternoon we went
were very happy !

Amazing Day
On Saturday morning at 9.30, I was walking down sunda
street, looking for a record store. A man stopped me and asked
me the way to the hyatt Hotel. I wasn’t sure exactly where it was,
but i walked with him to the end of sunda street. He was very
friendly, and his face looked so familiar. Then I remembered
where the Hyatt was and told him how to get there. He thanked
me and tried to give me someting. I thought it was money. I
said ‘no’ at first, but he really wanted me to have it, so I took it.
I found the record store and listened to a few records.
D’masive had a new record that was number two in the top
twenty. I decided to buy it. I looked in my bag for my wallet and
found a piece of paper the man gave me. It was a photo. I was
so surprised ! He was a singer in D’masive!

Super Moment
When I was in grade nine, I joined a mathematics and science competition. It was
held by SMAN 1 Banyuwangi. There were so many participants who joined it.
I went to the place of the competition at 6 am. I arrived there at 7 a.m. First, I
had to re-register at registration place. Then, I looked for my room. After I found it I
waited my friends at the gate. It took so much time because my friends arrived at 7.25
am. We had to go to the hall to do opening ceremony at 7.30 am. And at 8 a.m the
bell rang as a sign to enter to the room.
The second bell rang, time was up. I went out from the room and met my friends.
While waiting for the result, we did dhuha prayer together. Because we were hungry, we
went to the canteen to have breakfast. Finally, time to announce the result. I was so
curious. Frankly I got the second rank. I didn’t think so, because I thought that the
questions were quite difficult.
I was so happy. That was an amazing day! And I would never forget it !

Two week ago I went to Semarang to attend my cousin’s
wedding. I was there for our days. I was involved in the preparation
wedding ceremony. Like other Javanese wedding ceremonies, it has
several complicated traditional rituals.

EVENTS

ORIENTATION

The very first ceremony was Siraman (bathing ceremony). Siraman
means to take a bath. The Siraman ceremony was organized in the afternoon.
I was also involved in preparing the place and the stuff needed. After the
Siraman, the bride was led to the wedding room. She was dressed with a
traditional woman blouse (kebaya) and batik clothes. Make-up put on her by
a traditional make-up woman who led the whole ceremony. The bride looked
very beautiful.
The second ceremony was Midodareni (ceremony on the eve before
the wedding). The bride had to stay in the room from 6 p.m. to midnight
accompanied by some elder women giving her useful advice. My other
cousins and I also visited her for a while.
The next ceremony was Paningsetan or Srah Srahan (traditional
engagement ceremony). The family of the would-be-bridegroom visited the
parents and the family of would-be-bride. They were bringing some gift. After
this ceremony, I helped the women in the backyard. We packed the snacks for
the party in the morning.
In the following morning, Ijab Ceremony (religious marriage
consecration) was held. I sat behind the bride. I really didn’t want to miss this
moment because it is the most important phase in the wedding. After Ijab,
there were some Javanese ceremonies following the wedding celebration.
They were Panggih, Balangan Suruh, Wiji Dadi, Sindur Binayang, Timbang,
Tanem, Tukar Kalpika, Kacar Kucur, Dahar Klimah, Sungkeman, and Mertui
Ceremoni. I was too busy in the reception table so I did not follow all of those
ceremonies.

After the wedding rituals, the reception followed. The newly
wed couple received blessing and greetings from the guests. The
newly wed couple looked very happy although they couldn’t their
tired faces.
I went back home in the evening by the last train. I went
happily because I could attend my cousin’s wedding even helped
the preparation

English Learning Material - a magazine taste

  • 1. XA1 project XA1 “ You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him find it within himself. ” (Galileo Galilei)
  • 2. Dear Readers, are to be out of your mind? Or you just like to stick to the same patterns of behavior all the time? Well, Students of grade X SMA Negeri 1 Genteng Banyuwangi would like to present their English materials in a little bit different form. They compose them into a magazine taste. Later we just call it Mag-book. What is a Mag -book? Okay, it is actually a matter of designing the students` English material based on syllabus into what we call `a magazine taste. ` The design looks like a magazine – colorful, full of pictures, etc. Hopefully, the students will be more excited to learn. Since we believe that pictures speak more loudly than words. They get involved in designing the lay-out, the coloring, the editing process, and in some extends, taking part in selecting the materials to learn. By so doing, the learning materials will be easily and quickly understood by the students. Surprisingly, they feel very enthusiastic in doing this great work. Well, hopefully, this will be a great help for them to learn English. Any sound criticism is welcome. A.Eko Hartono

When we arrived at the beach, we were surprised to see there was hardly anyone there. After having a quick dip in the ocean, which was really cold, we realized one reason there were not many people there. It was also quite windy. After we bought some hot chips at the takeaway store nearby, we rode our bikes down the beach for a while, on the hard, damp part of the sand. We had the wind behind us and, before we knew it, we were many miles down the beach. Before we made the long trip back, we decided to paddle our feet in the water for a while, and then sit down for a rest. While we were sitting on the beach, just chatting, it suddenly dawned on us that all the way back, we would be riding into the strong wind. When we finally made it back home, we were both totally exhausted! But we learned some good lessons that day. 4|Pa g e

A recount text has three elements : orientation or setting, events and re – orientation or concluding statement of the story. The orientation tells the readers who was involved in the story, what happened, where the story took place, and when it happened. The Events tell the sequence of events. These are described in order. The re-orientation summaries the event. Activity 1 Last weekend, my friends and I went camping. We reached the camping ground after we walked for about one and a half hour from the parking lot. We built the camp next to a small river. It was getting darker and colder, so we built a fire camp. The next day, we spent our time observing plantation and insects while the girls were preparing meals. In the afternoon we went to the river and caught some fish for supper. at night, we held a fire camp night. We sang, danced, read poetry, played magic tricks, and even some of us performed a standing comedy. • 37. Our own experience Super Moment When I was in grade nine, I joined a mathematics and science competition. It was held by SMAN 1 Banyuwangi. There were so many participants who joined it. I went to the place of the competition at 6 am. I arrived there at 7 a.m. First, I had to re-register at registration place. Then, I looked for my room. After I found it I waited my friends at the gate. It took so much time because my friends arrived at 7.25 am. We had to go to the hall to do opening ceremony at 7.30 am. And at 8 a.m the bell rang as a sign to enter to the room. The second bell rang, time was up. I went out from the room and met my friends. While waiting for the result, we did dhuha prayer together. Because we were hungry, we went to the canteen to have breakfast. Finally, time to announce the result. I was so curious. Frankly I got the second rank. I didn’t think so, because I thought that the questions were quite difficult. I was so happy. That was an amazing day! And I would never forget it !

  • 42. Two week ago I went to Semarang to attend my cousin’s wedding. I was there for our days. I was involved in the preparation wedding ceremony. Like other Javanese wedding ceremonies, it has several complicated traditional rituals. EVENTS ORIENTATION The very first ceremony was Siraman (bathing ceremony). Siraman means to take a bath. The Siraman ceremony was organized in the afternoon. I was also involved in preparing the place and the stuff needed. After the Siraman, the bride was led to the wedding room. She was dressed with a traditional woman blouse (kebaya) and batik clothes. Make-up put on her by a traditional make-up woman who led the whole ceremony. The bride looked very beautiful. The second ceremony was Midodareni (ceremony on the eve before the wedding). The bride had to stay in the room from 6 p.m. to midnight accompanied by some elder women giving her useful advice. My other cousins and I also visited her for a while. The next ceremony was Paningsetan or Srah Srahan (traditional engagement ceremony). The family of the would-be-bridegroom visited the parents and the family of would-be-bride. They were bringing some gift. After this ceremony, I helped the women in the backyard. We packed the snacks for the party in the morning. In the following morning, Ijab Ceremony (religious marriage consecration) was held. I sat behind the bride. I really didn’t want to miss this moment because it is the most important phase in the wedding. After Ijab, there were some Javanese ceremonies following the wedding celebration. They were Panggih, Balangan Suruh, Wiji Dadi, Sindur Binayang, Timbang, Tanem, Tukar Kalpika, Kacar Kucur, Dahar Klimah, Sungkeman, and Mertui Ceremoni. I was too busy in the reception table so I did not follow all of those ceremonies. After the wedding rituals, the reception followed. The newly wed couple received blessing and greetings from the guests. The newly wed couple looked very happy although they couldn’t their tired faces. I went back home in the evening by the last train. I went happily because I could attend my cousin’s wedding even helped the preparation REORIENTATION
