THE FIBRE-TO-THE-DISTRIBUTION-POINT CONCEPT (1)
INTRODUCING THE FIBRE-TO-THE-DISTRIBUTION-POINT CONCEPT
• Fibre rollout has been slow until now ALSO because of the “practical” problems related to FTTH & FTTB
FTTB is not a Plug-and-Play solution for operators

THE FIBRE-TO-THE-DISTRIBUTION-POINT CONCEPT (2)
FIBRE-TO-THE-DISTRIBUTION-POINT IS HYBRID FTTH PLUS REVERSE POWERING
• Fibre arrives up to the basement / floor / pole / shaft and VDSL2 is used over the existing copper / coax cabling
• A Hybrid Network Termination (which acts as a fibre GPON-to-VDSL2 “adapter”) is installed
in the basement / floor / pole / shaft for each one of the users EACH USER IS FULLY INDEPENDENT
• Each user powers his own HNT by plugging a Reverse Power Feeder unit in his home to the power socket and the
telephone master socket. Reverse Powering is a TNV-1 circuit, in order to permit user self-install in complete safety.
VDSL2 over this short
distance is SUPERFAST
UP TO 250 Mbps
ON ONE SINGLE COPPER PAIR
AGGREGATED DATARATES
(VDSL2 30a PROFILE)
Hybrid Nework Terminations are single-user reverse-
powered modules (ultra low consumption < 10W)
POWER COMES FROM THE USER’S
HOME THROUGH THE SAME COPPER /
COAX CABLING USED FOR VDSL2
EVERY USER POWERS HIS OWN MODULE

FTTdP means Self-Install
THE IMPORTANCE OF A SELF-INSTALL SYSTEM
FIBRE-TO-THE-DISTRIBUTION-POINT INSTALLATION IN THE HOME NETWORK
• In order to have a SUCCESSFUL SOLUTION for both the customers and the operator, it is important that the installation
phase in the home network is as much easy and seamless as possible to:
– LOWER THE COSTS for both the operator and the customer
– MINIMIZE THE TIME NEEDED
• The best option would be of course handling the installation without the need of scheduling an engineer appointment
at the customer’s home; this will avoid:
– hassle for the customer and time (4 hours appointment, need to get time away from work…)
– cost for the operator
– eventual cost for the customer
• FTTdP can be deployed as “self-install” for the enduser
FTTdP injects power in the copper pairs from the home network to feed the network
termination, so the installation needs to be handled carefully in order to grant service
continuity and avoid damages to devices connected to the home network,
especially when the home network has more than one socket in series or in parallel.

FTTdP means Self-Install
2-steps INSTALLATION PROCEDURE (1)
2-steps INSTALLATION PROCESS AND SEAMLESS SERVICE MIGRATION
• Installation is performed in two asynchronous steps in order to grant service continuity to the customer with the “OLD”
service (ADSL, POTS…) AFTER the installation of the HNT1 board at the distribution point and BEFORE the
connection of the RPF1 in the home of the customer.
• HNT1 and RPF1 have been designed to perform these operations easily

13
FTTdP means Self-Install
2-steps INSTALLATION PROCEDURE (2)
FTTdP INSTALLATION STEP 1
• The engineer installs the HNT1 board at the distribution
point; the HNT1 board is still not powered
• The engineer cuts the copper pair coming from the CO and
insert the two endings in the HNT1
• When not powered, HNT1 is passthrough; galvanic
continuity of the copper pair and old service is restored.
• Service disruption for the customer due to the installation
procedure is minimal and lasts less than 5 mins: just cut,
reconnect and go showtime again
FTTdP INSTALLATION STEP 2
• The customer receives the RPF1 and plugs it to the power
socket
• The customer disconnets the modem from the master
socket and connectes it to the RPF1 RJ11 socket which
becomes the “new” master socket
• The customer connects the RPF1 to the wall master socket
using the RJ12-to-RJ11 cable provided with RPF1
• Current flows through the building loop powering the HNT1
previously installed at the distribution point
• The HNT1 disconnects the central office from the customer
and start providing broadband access in VDSL2 profile 30a
with 250Mpbs fibre-like darates
• There is no need to change the modem
BBWF2013 demo demo setup
FTTdP UN-INSTALLATION
• If the customer chooses to unsubscribe the service, the two steps installation can be done in reverse
• When the customer disconnects the RPF1, HNT1 is switched off and and galvanic continuity to central office is restored
• The HNT1 board can be then removed to be reused
2-steps INSTALLATION PROCESS AND SEAMLESS SERVICE MIGRATION
• Installation is performed in two asynchronous steps in order to grant service continuity to the customer with the “OLD”
service (ADSL, POTS…) AFTER the installation of the HNT1 board at the distribution point and BEFORE the
connection of the RPF1 in the home of the customer.

RPF1 REVERSE POWER FEEDER
AETHRA® TELECOMMUNICATIONS RPF1 REVERSE POWER FEEDER
• RPF1 reverse power feeder is designed to be a small box similar to a CPE PSU unit; it operates as a TNV-1 circuit
delivering a maximum of 200mA@58V to permit user self-install.
• Connections with the copper loop and the VDSL2 modem are managed through two RJ connectors:
– RJ12 CONNECTOR, to connect the copper loop (VDSL2 signal AND power)
– RJ11 CONNECTOR, to connect the VDSL2 modem (VDSL2 signal)
• The RPF1 reverse power feeder also includes a “SERVICE” LED
which can offer additional information on service status:
– BLINKING RED, RPF1 is not powering, either because
no HNT1 is connected or because there is something
external in the network (i.e. an off-hooked phone present
in one of the sockets of the home network);
– BLINKING GREEN, RPF1 is in “discovery mode”, trying
to sense if there is an HNT1 connected. The RPF1 enters
the “discovery mode” every 10 seconds; the “discovery
mode” lasts for 5 seconds.
– FIXED GREEN, the RPF1 is powering the HNT1.

SELF-INSTALL SCENARIO (1)
FIBRE-TO-THE-DISTRIBUTION-POINT SELF-INSTALL SCENARIO (1)
• When the customer does not need POTS regeneration, installation can be easily deployed without the need for an
engineer appointment
• With no legacy POTS service required after the installation, voice services are provided through VoIP and so using
FXS ports on the VDSL2 CPE / IAD
ANY PHONE, FAX OR DEVICE MUST BE CONNECTED TO ONE OF THE FXS PORTS OF THE VDSL2 IAD

FIBRE-TO-THE-DISTRIBUTION-POINT SELF-INSTALL SCENARIO (2)
WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMETHING IS CONNECTED TO THE “EXTRA” SOCKETS?
Analog phone /
home automation device…
!!!
HOME AUTOMATION DEVICES
• Home automation devices making service calls MUST be connected
to the FXS ports of the VDSL2 IAD; door openers using off hook
signals won’t work anymore
ANALOG PHONE, ON-HOOK
• The phone can’t receive or make calls but as soon as it stays on
hook, everything works as normal
ANALOG PHONE, OFF-HOOK
• If off hook, the phone closes the loop creating problems.
NO SERVICE, eg. LED on RPF1 STARTS BLINKING.

Installation in the home network
SELF-INSTALL SCENARIO (3)
SAFETY MANAGEMENT USING THE SERVICE LED:
• If something is connected to or trying to use the line of an extra socket the result will ALWAYS be either:
– NOTHING, the system will continue to work as normal
– SERVICE TEMPORARILY DOWN WITH “SERVICE” LED BLINKING, for example when someone picks up the handset of
a phone connected to one of the extra home plugs
– SERVICE DOWN WITH “SERVICE” LED BLINKING, the RPF1 lost the connection with the board due to wiring or
hardware problems
CURRENT DELIVERY
• According to ETSI TR 102 614 RPF1 operates as a TNV-1 circuit
delivering a maximum of 200mA@58V (ETSI TR 102 614 sets a
60 V@250 mA limit).
• If a device connected to the former home network “closes the loop”
(i.e. an analog phone put in the off-hook condition) the maximum
amount of current it can receive is compatible with the normal POTS
current absorption values.
HNT1 PRESENCE AWARENESS
• RPF1 Reverse Power Feeder is ready to implement a (proprietary)
system to detect if it is connected to a HNT1 Hybrid Network
Termination before starting the feeding process that “awakens” the
HNT1 board.
• If the HNT1 goes down, power feeding is stopped and not
restarted until the full “handshake” process is completed.
• RPF1 could use a POE-like technique to inject power according to
ETSI TR 102 629: if something other than the HNT1 tries to receive
current, RPF1 could stop the feeding process.

  • 11. CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT DISTRIBUTE. AETHRA TELECOMMUNICATIONS 11 FTTdP means Self-Install THE IMPORTANCE OF A SELF-INSTALL SYSTEM FIBRE-TO-THE-DISTRIBUTION-POINT INSTALLATION IN THE HOME NETWORK • In order to have a SUCCESSFUL SOLUTION for both the customers and the operator, it is important that the installation phase in the home network is as much easy and seamless as possible to: – LOWER THE COSTS for both the operator and the customer – MINIMIZE THE TIME NEEDED • The best option would be of course handling the installation without the need of scheduling an engineer appointment at the customer’s home; this will avoid: – hassle for the customer and time (4 hours appointment, need to get time away from work…) – cost for the operator – eventual cost for the customer • FTTdP can be deployed as “self-install” for the enduser FTTdP injects power in the copper pairs from the home network to feed the network termination, so the installation needs to be handled carefully in order to grant service continuity and avoid damages to devices connected to the home network, especially when the home network has more than one socket in series or in parallel.
  • 12. CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT DISTRIBUTE. AETHRA TELECOMMUNICATIONS 12 FTTdP means Self-Install 2-steps INSTALLATION PROCEDURE (1) 2-steps INSTALLATION PROCESS AND SEAMLESS SERVICE MIGRATION • Installation is performed in two asynchronous steps in order to grant service continuity to the customer with the “OLD” service (ADSL, POTS…) AFTER the installation of the HNT1 board at the distribution point and BEFORE the connection of the RPF1 in the home of the customer. • HNT1 and RPF1 have been designed to perform these operations easily COPPER PAIR TO THE RPF1 IN THE HOMECOPPER PAIR TO THE CENTRAL OFFICE GPON FIBRE TO THE OLT DEBUG CONNECTOR RJ12 CONNECTOR COPPER PAIR TO HNT1 RJ11 CONNETOR TO THE VDSL2 MODEM RPF1 connectorsHNT1 connectors
  • 13. CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT DISTRIBUTE. AETHRA TELECOMMUNICATIONS 13 FTTdP means Self-Install 2-steps INSTALLATION PROCEDURE (2) FTTdP INSTALLATION STEP 1 • The engineer installs the HNT1 board at the distribution point; the HNT1 board is still not powered • The engineer cuts the copper pair coming from the CO and insert the two endings in the HNT1 • When not powered, HNT1 is passthrough; galvanic continuity of the copper pair and old service is restored. • Service disruption for the customer due to the installation procedure is minimal and lasts less than 5 mins: just cut, reconnect and go showtime again FTTdP INSTALLATION STEP 2 • The customer receives the RPF1 and plugs it to the power socket • The customer disconnets the modem from the master socket and connectes it to the RPF1 RJ11 socket which becomes the “new” master socket • The customer connects the RPF1 to the wall master socket using the RJ12-to-RJ11 cable provided with RPF1 • Current flows through the building loop powering the HNT1 previously installed at the distribution point • The HNT1 disconnects the central office from the customer and start providing broadband access in VDSL2 profile 30a with 250Mpbs fibre-like darates • There is no need to change the modem BBWF2013 demo demo setup FTTdP UN-INSTALLATION • If the customer chooses to unsubscribe the service, the two steps installation can be done in reverse • When the customer disconnects the RPF1, HNT1 is switched off and and galvanic continuity to central office is restored • The HNT1 board can be then removed to be reused 2-steps INSTALLATION PROCESS AND SEAMLESS SERVICE MIGRATION • Installation is performed in two asynchronous steps in order to grant service continuity to the customer with the “OLD” service (ADSL, POTS…) AFTER the installation of the HNT1 board at the distribution point and BEFORE the connection of the RPF1 in the home of the customer.
  • 14. CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT DISTRIBUTE. AETHRA TELECOMMUNICATIONS 14 FTTdP means Self-Install RPF1 REVERSE POWER FEEDER AETHRA® TELECOMMUNICATIONS RPF1 REVERSE POWER FEEDER • RPF1 reverse power feeder is designed to be a small box similar to a CPE PSU unit; it operates as a TNV-1 circuit delivering a maximum of 200mA@58V to permit user self-install. • Connections with the copper loop and the VDSL2 modem are managed through two RJ connectors: – RJ12 CONNECTOR, to connect the copper loop (VDSL2 signal AND power) – RJ11 CONNECTOR, to connect the VDSL2 modem (VDSL2 signal) • The RPF1 reverse power feeder also includes a “SERVICE” LED which can offer additional information on service status: – BLINKING RED, RPF1 is not powering, either because no HNT1 is connected or because there is something external in the network (i.e. an off-hooked phone present in one of the sockets of the home network); – BLINKING GREEN, RPF1 is in “discovery mode”, trying to sense if there is an HNT1 connected. The RPF1 enters the “discovery mode” every 10 seconds; the “discovery mode” lasts for 5 seconds. – FIXED GREEN, the RPF1 is powering the HNT1. THE SERVICE DOWN LED IS INTENDED TO GIVE CUSTOMER SUPPORT A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM WHEN SOMEONE CALLS ASKING FOR HELP WHEN THE SERVICE IS DOWN SERVICE Aethra® Telecommunications RPF1 Reverse Power Feeder SIGNAL: VDSL2 CONNECTOR: RJ11 TO: MODEM SIGNAL: VDSL2, POWER CONNECTOR: RJ12 TO: COPPER LOOP POWER PLUG (ON THE BACK) SERVICE LED POWER POWER ON LED PHONE WALL CONNECT TO THE VDSL2 MODEM CONNECT TO THE WALL SOCKET
  • 15. CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT DISTRIBUTE. AETHRA TELECOMMUNICATIONS 15 Installation in the home network SELF-INSTALL SCENARIO (1) FIBRE-TO-THE-DISTRIBUTION-POINT SELF-INSTALL SCENARIO (1) • When the customer does not need POTS regeneration, installation can be easily deployed without the need for an engineer appointment • With no legacy POTS service required after the installation, voice services are provided through VoIP and so using FXS ports on the VDSL2 CPE / IAD ANY PHONE, FAX OR DEVICE MUST BE CONNECTED TO ONE OF THE FXS PORTS OF THE VDSL2 IAD ANY OTHER SOCKET INSIDE THE HOME NETWORK (IF PRESENT) IS NOT WORKING AND USELESS ANYWAY Standard VDSL2 modem / router / IAD Analog phone Aethra® Telecommunications HNT1 Hybrid Network Termination Aethra® Telecommunications RPF1 Reverse Power Feeder NETWORK LOOP VDSL2 USED SOCKET VDSL2 Analog phone Analog phone FXS PORTS VDSL2 BUILDING HOME EXTRA SOCKET (DO NOT USE!!!) Analog phone / home automation device… !!! HOME AUTOMATION DEVICES • Home automation devices making service calls MUST be connected to the FXS ports of the VDSL2 IAD; door openers using off hook signals won’t work anymore ANALOG PHONE, ON-HOOK • The phone can’t receive or make calls but as soon as it stays on hook, everything works as normal ANALOG PHONE, OFF-HOOK • If off hook, the phone closes the loop creating problems. • 17. CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT DISTRIBUTE. AETHRA TELECOMMUNICATIONS 17 Installation in the home network SELF-INSTALL SCENARIO (3) SAFETY MANAGEMENT USING THE SERVICE LED: • If something is connected to or trying to use the line of an extra socket the result will ALWAYS be either: – NOTHING, the system will continue to work as normal – SERVICE TEMPORARILY DOWN WITH “SERVICE” LED BLINKING, for example when someone picks up the handset of a phone connected to one of the extra home plugs – SERVICE DOWN WITH “SERVICE” LED BLINKING, the RPF1 lost the connection with the board due to wiring or hardware problems CURRENT DELIVERY • According to ETSI TR 102 614 RPF1 operates as a TNV-1 circuit delivering a maximum of 200mA@58V (ETSI TR 102 614 sets a 60 V@250 mA limit). • If a device connected to the former home network “closes the loop” (i.e. an analog phone put in the off-hook condition) the maximum amount of current it can receive is compatible with the normal POTS current absorption values. HNT1 PRESENCE AWARENESS • RPF1 Reverse Power Feeder is ready to implement a (proprietary) system to detect if it is connected to a HNT1 Hybrid Network Termination before starting the feeding process that “awakens” the HNT1 board. • If the HNT1 goes down, power feeding is stopped and not restarted until the full “handshake” process is completed. • RPF1 could use a POE-like technique to inject power according to ETSI TR 102 629: if something other than the HNT1 tries to receive current, RPF1 could stop the feeding process.
