Date 1688–1689
 English civil war (1642-1651): First idea of a
gorverment with limits.
 James I (ends in 1625) and Charles I (ends in 1649)
wanted to import Louis XIV´s absolutism.
 Charles II (1661-1685): The Restoration "a divinely
ordained miracle”. The sudden and unexpected
deliverance from usurpation and tyranny was
interpreted as a restoration of the natural and divine
order.
As there was not legitimate
heir to the throne of Charles
II´s marriage with the
Portuguese Catharine of
Bragança, his brother James
II succeeded him to the
throne.
Causes (1687 )

Declaration of Indulgence, suspending
the penal laws in matters ecclesiastical
in England.
•In Scotland the Indulgence stated that
subjects were to obey the King's "sovereign
authority, prerogative royal, and absolute
power" “without reserve”
•in England it did not allow:
The liberty of conscience (Religion).
The parlamentarian´s laws .
October/November During these months rumors begin to
circulate to the effect that James’s wife,
Queen Mary of Modena, is pregnant.
On 30 June 1688, a group of seven protestant nobles invited the Prince of
Orange to come to England with his army.
