Direct and indirect speech

2. Direct speech is a form of sentences which
use to reporting something that’s being
said now. Direct speech also use to talk
each other.
For example:
She said, “I like school”
She said, “I am studying French”
They said, “We took some photos.”
They said, “We were swimming at 10am.”
He say, “I have eaten breakfast.”
He asked me, “why do you love me?”
She tell me, “don’t let me alone!”
3. Reported speech also called indirect speech.
Reported speech is usually used to talk about
something was said in the past, so we
normally change the tense of the words
spoken. But reported speech not only use to
talk about something was said in the
past, sometimes reported speech also use to
talk about something was said in that
moment.
4. Example of reported speech:
She said that she liked school.
She said that she is studying French.
They said that they had taken some photos.
They said that they had been swimming at
10am.
He say that he have eaten breakfast.
He asked me why I loved him.
She tell me not to let me alone.

simple present simple past
He said, “I go to school every He said (that) he went to school

simple past past perfect

auxiliary + verb name simple past
He said, “Do you go to school He asked me if /wheter I went to

imperative infinitive
He said, “Go to school every day.” He said to go to school every day.
7. The situation change if there is the word in verb
2 (said, told, asked, reported, ETC) in front of
the sentence.
Example:
direct speech -> he told her “I’m hungry.”
reported speech -> he told her that he was
hungry.
But situation will be same if there is the the word
in verb 1 (say, tell, ask, report, ETC) in front of
sentence.
Example:
direct speech -> he says “I did my home work”
reported speech -> he says that he did his home
work
8. Direct speech:
The policeman told the man, “Please follow me to the police
station.”
Reported speech:
The policeman told the man to follow him to the police
station.
Direct speech:
He asked, “Can you buy me a copy of the newspaper now?”
Reportde speech:
He asked if I could buy him a copy of the newspaper then.
Direct speech:
John said, “Sam and Max are going to the theater tonight.”
Reported speech:
John said that Sam and Max were going to the theater that
night.
