7. GOTHIC AND MODERNISM IN BARCELONA
Barcelona is a big city in Spain and the capital of Catalonia. It was a
Roman castrum called Barcino, near the Mediterranean sea.
In the Middle Age
it became a royal
burgh.
Under the
influence of this
period, we have a
lot of places and
buildings that we
can visit. It is a
rute for visit in
BCN, called
Gothic, for
example, Sta Maria del Mar Church, the Cathedral, Born square, and a
lot of palaces, like in Montcada st. where now there are the Picasso
Museum, Collection Dress, and Art Galleries. Nowadays it is a lively
neighbourhood, with restaurants, bars, pubs, shops, etc.
After this period, BCN had another golden period in the 19th century,
called Modernism. In this period the middle class built the new town.
Nowadays we can
see the finest
modernist
architecture, for
example Batlló
house, Ametller
house called “La
Pedrera”, Güell Park,
“Sagrada Familia”, Music Palace “Palau de la
Música”, “La casa de les Punxes” etc, built by
the most famous architects like Antoni
Gaudi, Puig i Cadafalch, Domènech i
Muntaner... When people come to BCN, they
can visit this route.
8. In 1929 BCN celebrated the
Universal Exhibition, and then BCN
built a new area in Montjüic, with
the famous fountain which has a
colourful water display, built by
Buigas.
In 1992 BCN held the olympic games and became the most important
city in the world.
