Our aim was to hitchhike in the north-east of India on a ridiculous budget of Rs. 150 ($3) per day. The trip taught me to be creative and adaptive. I met different people but they are, usually, good.
2. A general strike was called at Guwahati, our first base in the North-east.
We had to leave for Shillong immediately where a stranger even hosted in his hotel!
3. A couchsurfing host in Siliguri organized a press meet for us before we began our journey.
4. Got chased by ferocious guard dogs when we ignored this sign at the Tripura palace in
Shillong.
5. A pastor hosted us in Agartala – we had got his number from a truck driver on a 48hr bus
journey!
6. The principal of a school in Aizawl gave us Rs. 1000 for our travel after he heard our stories.
7. This wasn’t a vehicle we traveled in, but we traveled in Tata Sumos with 14 passengers
plenty of times. These were much more inconvenient than the trucks we hitched rides on.
8. This was the room where we were hosted the second time in Guwahati. We had got
delayed in getting permits to enter Arunachal Pradesh, but can you say no to such an
awesome host?!
9. In addition to traveling at a ridiculously low budget, our initial plan was to collect folk music a
well. In addition, I had planned to run 10k at each of the place we visited. But alas, you can’t
do everything!
10. A conversation with a guy on a Sumo to Bomdila got us introduced to these wonderful local
kids. They took us on a hike up a small mountain and even hosted us for a night.
11. Our average expense per day at the end of the hitchhiking trip ($3 at that time).
