AUDIENCE THEORIES
How does ‘Reflux’ attract it’s audience
What our audience is
Our audience are sophisticated and will be
mainly active ,this will mean we can apply
the following theories to them:
•Two step flow theory
•Blumer and Katz’s uses and gratifications
•David Morley/ Stuart Hall’s reception
analysis
•Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
David Morley’s reception
analysis
This theory applies to our audience as it takes the
audience as being active and having their own
perception on things shown in the media. This means
that our target audience would fit into this due to
them being sophisticated and they would take a
negotiated reading from our product as they should
see the stereotypes that we are showing so that they
can challenge them to suit their own needs. An
example of this would be the stereotypical
representation of working class families being split
up.The sophisticated audience could then challenge
this as they would use their knowledge to state that
people like them also have troubled families.
However the secondary audience being less
sophisticated would get a dominant ready due to
them not being aware of the stereotype.
Uses and Gratifications
The appearance of women is very low in our
production as just two are present as we see
the mother being un-stereotypically
aggressive towards her husband instead of
wanting his gratification , like we would
expect to happen. This means she is being
David Gauntlett’s empowered female as she
is standing up for herself and is not looking
for gratitude from the male. This means that
she is not being passive. This would entice
the audience as they would want to see why
she is not acting stereotypically.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Due to Ethan being from an urban
area like our secondary audience
they will be able to get personal
identity from his actions .Thus if
they were to watch our product this
would then satisfy there needs for
security, morality and confidence.
The primary audience will just gain
satisfaction from solving the many
enigmas available according to
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs .
If we were to apply the
‘identification’ theory to
the audience this could
result in them feeling
better as they won’t
think that there life is so
bad.This is emphasized
with the little dialogue
and would mainly Apply
to the passive secondary
audience.
Two step flow theory
We can apply the two step flow theory for
sections of our production where the ideologies
are difficult. This difficulty could make the less
sophisticated audience just accept the
representations due to them being passive.
So the opinion leaders can use their superior
preferred reading and manipulate the passive
audience.
Conclusion
Overall the use of audiences is
very vast and includes a majority
meaning that more will be able to
watch our film. However the
opening sequence may be too
difficult to understand for most as
we could have explained a bit
more e.g. the flashbacks as they
didn't explain a lot however the
target audience need those
enigmas for there morality
