20120916 who are you
1. You are not the Hero!
Jesus First
For God’s glory …
… His pleasure …
… and our joy.
“God is most glorified in
us when we are most
satisfied in him.”
John Piper
2. Jesus First[2/9]
‘Who are You?’
Genesis 1:27 God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
3. Who are you?
• Your Name?
• Your Gender and sexuality?
• Your history and experiences?
• Your occupation and activities?
• Your relationships and responsibilities
4. You are …
• A person … a human being
• A child of God … a follower of Jesus
5. Ephesians 4: 11-13
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the
prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and
teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of
service, so that the body of Christ may be built
up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in
the knowledge of the Son of God and become
mature, attaining to the whole measure of the
fullness of Christ.
6. Ephesians 4: 14-16
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and
forth by the waves, and blown here and there by
every wind of teaching and by the cunning and
craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.
15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow
to become in every respect the mature body of
him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him
the whole body, joined and held together by every
supporting ligament, grows and builds
itself up in love, as each part does its work.
7. Growing up into the fullness of Christ
Who you are in Christ
Worship as all of life
How we are together
Where we are going
8. Matthew 6: 31-34
So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or
“What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?”
32 For the pagans run after all these things, and
your heavenly Father knows that you need
them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will be given
to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about
tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own.
9. You are a child of God
• In Christ you are accepted
• In Christ you are secure
• In Christ you are significant
10. 2 Corinthians 15: 17-20
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new
creation has come: the old has gone, the new is
here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to
himself through Christ and gave us the ministry
of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the
world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s
sins against them. And he has committed to us
the message of reconciliation. 20 We are
therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though
God were making his appeal through us.
Nik started our series last week with superheroesHe asked the question:Do you see yourself as the main character on the stage in a play about the story of your life?Or, to put it another way, are you a bit part player in God’s big story of Creation, Fall, Redemption and Glorification? In this series we are again looking at what it means to love God, to follow Jesus and to put him first in every area of life. The reason for doing this is so we can better glorify God, which is ultimately our purpose in life. And it is in glorifying God, that we find the path to experiencing the joy of the Lord … which is something Jesus promised to anyone who follows him.Or, as John Piper put it, God is most gloried in us when we are most satisfied in him.
Take a few minutes to introduce yourself to somebody close to you … preferably somebody you don’t know.If it is somebody you already know, see if you can share more of yourself than you have done previously. You have two minutes – and then we will change over.
Following Jesus is about all of life … being a Christian is not some nice extra religious activity that you fit into your spare time, like some sort of hobby.Loving God comes ahead of finding your soul mate, sorting out your career, working on a marriage, raising a family, fulfilling your dreams or planning for your retirementIn fact, all of these other things can only really make sense if
According to the first book in the Bible, Genesis when humanity was created by God we experienced AcceptanceSecurity SignificanceAll of these things were lost when we rebelledSince then we have experiencedRejectionFearLack of purposeIN Christ all of these are restoredWhen I became a Christian aged 19 it was the followed by the hardest 12 months of my life and the since then, There has been glory, joy and the best years and the biggest chanllenges + a faithful God.
