Meeting the Needs of Distance Education Populations Presented by Andrew Lemerise, MLIS June 21, 2010
Awareness of Library Resources & Services Reference Assistance, Instruction, & Training ILL/Document Delivery Primary Needs
Awareness of Services & Resources Students Often unaware of library resources and services (Lillard, Wilson, & Baird, 2004; Nicholas & Tomeo, 2005; Tripathi & Jeevan, 2009; Zao & Zheng Ye, 2004) Faculty & Staff Somewhat more informed than students of resources and services, but still unaware of full scope  (Hightower, Rawl, & Schutt, 2007; Hines, 2006; Thomsett-Scott & May, 2009)
Reference, Instruction, & Training Students Have difficulty using library systems (Cooper, Dempsey, Menon, & Millson-Martula, 1998; Lillard, et al., 2004; Raraigh-Hopper, 2010; Zao & Zheng Ye, 2004)  Find reference assistance from librarians very helpful (Lillard, et al., 2004; Raraigh-Hopper, 2010)  Lack the research skills expected by faculty (Hightower, Rawl, & Schutt, 2007; Thomsett-Scott & May, 2009) Faculty & Staff Find library systems difficult to use (Hines, 2006; Thomsett-Scott & May, 2009)  Consider collaboration with librarians useful (Hightower, et al., 2007; Hines, 2006; Kearley & Phillips, 2005; Thomsett-Scott & May, 2009)
ILL/Document Delivery Students Vital to their ability to access scholarly material (Raraigh-Hopper, 2010; Tripathi & Jeevan, 2009) ACRL standard for services to distance learners (Association of College & Research Libraries, 2008)  Faculty & Staff More likely to utilize print material (Imler & Hall, 2009) ACRL standard for services to distance learners (Association of College & Research Libraries, 2008)

Awareness of Services & Resources Students Often unaware of library resources and services (Lillard, Wilson, & Baird, 2004; Nicholas & Tomeo, 2005; Tripathi & Jeevan, 2009; Zao & Zheng Ye, 2004) Faculty & Staff Somewhat more informed than students of resources and services, but still unaware of full scope (Hightower, Rawl, & Schutt, 2007; Hines, 2006; Thomsett-Scott & May, 2009)
