DILG Social Media Marketing Presentation

Editor's Notes

  1. It is not enough to create your own website, “if you build it they will come” does not work in real life business much more on the internet, corporations mistake the notion that if they have created a business or a website, then its done. You need to show them where you are so they know where they “will come”. Similar to Traditional Marketing, Social Media Marketing is marketing over the web. This presentation would have two parts: Tackles the what and the how of Social Media Marketing Give tips on how to create a website.
  2. Tri-Media Marketing shoots ads like a shot gun through Print (e.g. newspapers), TV Ads and Radio Ads. It does not matter where it hits; an Ad of a Ferrari, Rolex, or Hermes can be viewed by Class D and E market living on top of the mountain who cannot afford such products nor has use for it.
  3. Quad Media Marketing uses a fourth medium, the Internet. We receive them as SPAM emails, Web Ads, bots, worms, etc. which has turned into a nuisance that we spend money to install protectors to detect and delete them. Some bots or worms even penetrate our data to get personal information and contacts especially within our email applications.
  4. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) simply is to put your website in the first page, at best the top 3 choice of a key word search at Search Engines such as Google and Yahoo. The objective of SEO are to: Make more people visit your site by putting it in the 1 st page or top 3 of any keyword search. Make corporations pay to place ads on your website. There is an Alexa (www.alexa.com) rating which ranks the website based on the number of visitors or hits you have on your website. If your website is within the 1 to 1 Million Rank then Companies are willing to pay to place ads in your website.
  5. To do Search Engine Optimization you need to: Put in keywords in the wordings of your web site and also within the website which are combinations of key words searches (e.g. Philippine Restaurants, best place to stay, cheapest store) depending on your business. Google, Yahoo and the Alexa Rating uses number of visits or hits as basis whether to put you on the first page or top 3 searches. To increase your hits you can: Hire companies to hit your site. Payments is dependent on the number of hits or visits you want. Hire companies to create SPAMS or bots (web robots) which are also computer viruses that go aroung and hit your site. Set your browsers to open to your website by default. This would help but Search Engines can trace if the hits are coming from one PC or PCs. Hire companies to do Social Media Marketing. But you can do SEO on your own, especially If you do not have a budget to do Social Media Marketing. Also, creating a website should also include a Social Media Marketing Plan.
  6. Niche Marketing looks for their market and create marketing activities where they are. If your market are High Spending Young Professionals you target them at Bars. If your market are families you target them at malls. If you are targeting housewives or household helps you place TV and/or Radio ads on shows between 10 am to 4pm when the kids are in school and parents at work.
  7. Similarly in the World Wide Web as in the real world you can do niche marketing.
  8. Fortunately by connecting on the Internet you are already connected to the World Wide Web. You can already segmentize your market using the Social Networks. There are groups depending on the likes, careers, schools etc. You can create activities and attract them to visit your website which would translate to more hits to your website which can be converted to sales of your products and/or services. Use Social Networking Sites to do Social Media Marketing. Aside from eMail, Use Messengers to communicate directly and on real time with your client who can be anywhere around the world. Use Groups to broadcast announcements to your captured group.
  9. The objective of Social Media Marketing are: If you do not have a website – promote your product at Social Networking Sites as part of your quad-media marketing. If you do have a website – attract people at Social Networking Sites to visit your website.
  10. There are three kind of Facebook account: The Personal Facebook account. Corporations or brands are not allowed as Personal Facebook Accounts. Even if you succeed in creating one, when FB notices you, they will ask you to either change the name of your account or close your page. You can only have maximum 5,000 friends in your Facebook account.
  11. 2) The Facebook page are for Corporation, Brands, Public Figure, etc. A Facebook Personal Account is needed as Admin to be able to create a Facebook page. It has limited features but unlimited number of fans.
  12. 3) Similar to the Facebook Page is the Facebook Group, if the Facebook Page is for promotion the Facebook Group is for taking care of your captured group for announcements, etc. The features for both are almost the same including having unlimited number of groupies. The difference is in the purpose or use.
  13. LinkedIn is the Social Networking Site for careers. Looking for a job, clients or simple networking. The applications and features at LinkedIn are only those useful for professional interaction, thus no games.
  14. Twitter is just a Social Networking Site where you can do shout outs or status updates limited to 150 characters per post. That’s it, no games and other features/functions. Personally I cannot still explain the popularity of Twitter since it is just like a huge billboard aside from the fact that you can communicate directly with Famous Celebrities. Also another plus is in its simplicity that it does not require much internet bandwidth and PC resources making it fast and easy.
  15. Yahoogroups is a communication tool for a private and captured group. You have to enter each member which then requires confirmation from the invitee prior to being finally included in your group. Thus it is not considered a Social Networking Site.
  16. Google+, Google’s try to compete with Facebook. I consider it a hybrid of Facebook and Yahoogroups because of the “circles”. They want to promote Google+ as Facebook with privacy. Personally I see the cup half empty, I see Google+ as Yahoogroups or Googlegroups with more features and functions.
  17. The second part of my presentation is How to Create a Website: Content - Collect all the functions, words and photos you want to put on your website. When you hire a web developer this is the first thing they will ask you to collect so they would know how to design your website. I have mentioned design, this is the most important part of a website. The creative outweighs the programming and the success of a web programmer depends on their creativity Web Development is the programming of the Content and the Design. Hosting is like the virtual store or apartment we are renting where we can put our website. This includes the address (domain name) of the website so people would know how to go to our website.
  18. There are three kind of Websites: Passive – just a simple website providing information and not connected to any database to make it interactive. You can program a Passive website using HTML programming Language or as an Application developed under Apple or Android. It depends what hardware and operating system. Active – website connected to a database to make it interactive. Input or retrieval of information. Depending on database or operating system. The two most popular are ASP for Microsoft or PhP for Linux. CMS – is an application like MS word or Facebook where the user who is non-technical can change the content but only after the web programmer has created the design and functions of the website. Examples of CMS are wordpress, joomla, mod-x, dupral, site studio, etc.
  19. Using the different regional DILG websites as example. I would like to give 10 tips in designing a website, taken from : http://www.w3schools.com/web/web_design.asp
  20. 1) Users are Scanners A typical visitor will NOT read the entire content of your Web page! No matter how much useful information you put into a Web page, a visitor will only spend a few seconds scanning it before he/she decide whether to leave or to stay. Be sure to make your point in the very first sentence of the page! After that, try to keep the user occupied with short paragraphs, and new headers down the page.

  22. 2) Less is More Keep the paragraphs as short as possible. Keep the pages as short as possible. Keep the chapters as short as possible.

  26. 4) Navigation Create a consistent navigation structure that is used by all the pages in your Web site. Don't use hyperlinks inside each paragraph, to send visitors to every page of your Web. This will destroy the feeling of a consistent navigation structure. If you must use hyperlinks, add them to the bottom of a paragraph, or to the menu.

  28. 5) Download Speed Sometimes developers are not aware of the fact that some pages take a long time to download. Most visitors will leave a Web page that takes more than 7 seconds to download. Test your web pages over a low-speed modem connection. If your pages take a long time to download, consider removing graphic or multimedia content.
  29. 6) Let your Audience Speak! Feedback is a very good thing! Your visitors are your "customers". Often they will give you some valuable hints about what you could have done better. Provide a simple way to reach you, and you will get a lot of input from people with different skills and knowledge.
  30. 7) Visitor's Monitor Not everyone on the internet has the same monitor as you. If you design a Web site to be displayed on a monitor with a high resolution, visitors with lower resolution monitors (like 800x600) might have problems reading your pages. Make sure you test your Web site on different monitors. Take a look at our browser display statistics to see the trends in monitor development.

  37. The best example is the DILG Main Website which Neil Yamit has said in his blog as the best Philippine Executive Department Website because it has consistent font. Clear sections and navigation, & a beautiful consistent color palette. The DILG website also earned the distinction of a “Disabled Friendly Website”. The team would like to recommend that the other DILG related websites should have the flavour of the DILG main website for branding. There should also be a link of any one website to the other DILG websites.
