About the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrist Founded in 1945  The leading professional and educational body TUC affiliated Union Major role in providing CPD for members No difference between a Chiropodist & Podiatrist!
Background Traditionally CPD is deemed as ‘going on courses’ or ‘reading articles’  The Health Professions Order 2001 – requirements for education and training or continuing professional development Recording and reflecting on CPD Haphazard approach to CPD with little or no planning
Union Learning Funded project SCP Grant from UnionLearning Fund to deliver key target to improve Union led learning amongst Podiatrists Identify,  commission and pilot the use of an e-portfolio
PebblePad – not just an e-portfolio PebblePad –  Personal learning space 500 licences Invite Union Learning Reps (ULRs) to lead apply for licences amongst their staff Train ULRs, who would in turn cascade the training among their teams.
How did we sell the project to the ULR ULR were pivotal to the implementation of the project Undertook a launch day – North and South Project team spoke at meetings of NHS podiatry  teams and local branches PebblePad team at the SCP conference  Publicity material for conference and other events Adverts / articles in professional journal (Podiatry Now)
Eligibility Criteria Work in the English Counties (i.e. not available to members from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland due to funding restrictions) Have access to a ULR Be a member of the SCP Have an email address Have access to internet served computer Agree to complete a pre-and post project questionnaire
Pre-evaluation questionnaire To establish a baseline for the project of members CPD ‘habits’ Their ‘system’ for recording CPD Self rating regarding computer expertise Expectations for the system
How will members use PebblePad Tool for recording, storing and reflecting CPD Cascading CPD resources amongst members Deliver and assess Podiatry Assistant training Self assessing professional competencies Communication – nationally and locally Other!
Successes Podiatrists found the idea of an e-portfolio a very useful adjunct for their CPD Fully subscribed to licences by end of December Purchased an extra 100 licences ULR’s and members enthusiasm  40 ULR’s undertook half day training on basics of using system
Problems and Pitfalls Underestimated the amount of administration time to allocate licences and process the questionnaires ULR’s lack confidence in taking on training role Overall lack of ICT skills and confidence from members Only one third of members to activate their licence  Fear about future of the project
Solutions to early problems Feedback to ULRs about the number of members who were accessing the system Resent login details and reminders Re-train ULRs  Offer advanced training Increase publicity and membership awareness of the system Get the SCP council on board
Potential wins from Project Improving ICT skills and confidence of members Able to embed functional skills in the training of PebblePad (i.e. ICT, literacy and numeracy) Help members prepare for their CPD audit Improve understanding of the requirements of the HPC in terms of CPD Use as a recruitment tool Members  ULRs

  • 2. About the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrist Founded in 1945 The leading professional and educational body TUC affiliated Union Major role in providing CPD for members No difference between a Chiropodist & Podiatrist!
  • 3. Background Traditionally CPD is deemed as ‘going on courses’ or ‘reading articles’ The Health Professions Order 2001 – requirements for education and training or continuing professional development Recording and reflecting on CPD Haphazard approach to CPD with little or no planning
  • 4. Union Learning Funded project SCP Grant from UnionLearning Fund to deliver key target to improve Union led learning amongst Podiatrists Identify, commission and pilot the use of an e-portfolio
  • 5. PebblePad – not just an e-portfolio PebblePad – Personal learning space 500 licences Invite Union Learning Reps (ULRs) to lead apply for licences amongst their staff Train ULRs, who would in turn cascade the training among their teams.

How did we sell the project to the ULR ULR were pivotal to the implementation of the project Undertook a launch day – North and South Project team spoke at meetings of NHS podiatry teams and local branches PebblePad team at the SCP conference Publicity material for conference and other events Adverts / articles in professional journal (Podiatry Now)
  • 7. Eligibility Criteria Work in the English Counties (i.e. not available to members from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland due to funding restrictions) Have access to a ULR Be a member of the SCP Have an email address Have access to internet served computer Agree to complete a pre-and post project questionnaire
  • 8. Pre-evaluation questionnaire To establish a baseline for the project of members CPD ‘habits’ Their ‘system’ for recording CPD Self rating regarding computer expertise Expectations for the system
  • 9. How will members use PebblePad Tool for recording, storing and reflecting CPD Cascading CPD resources amongst members Deliver and assess Podiatry Assistant training Self assessing professional competencies Communication – nationally and locally Other!
  • 10. Successes Podiatrists found the idea of an e-portfolio a very useful adjunct for their CPD Fully subscribed to licences by end of December Purchased an extra 100 licences ULR’s and members enthusiasm 40 ULR’s undertook half day training on basics of using system
  • 11. Problems and Pitfalls Underestimated the amount of administration time to allocate licences and process the questionnaires ULR’s lack confidence in taking on training role Overall lack of ICT skills and confidence from members Only one third of members to activate their licence Fear about future of the project
  • 12. Solutions to early problems Feedback to ULRs about the number of members who were accessing the system Resent login details and reminders Re-train ULRs Offer advanced training Increase publicity and membership awareness of the system Get the SCP council on board
  • 13. Potential wins from Project Improving ICT skills and confidence of members Able to embed functional skills in the training of PebblePad (i.e. ICT, literacy and numeracy) Help members prepare for their CPD audit Improve understanding of the requirements of the HPC in terms of CPD Use as a recruitment tool Members ULRs
