Softline Testing Chemical Tests

Intended for textile products large number of chemical tests are performed in chemical section.
Performed tests exhibits if products are harmful for human health and environment, in addition if
sample contains any harmful compound quantitative analysis could be performed.

For chemical analysis samples are cut into the small pieces. To achieve the target harmful
compounds in liquid phase special extraction or digestion process is applied. After extraction or
digestion stage sample solutions are analyzed by high-tech instruments such as LC-MS, GC-MS,
ICP-MS etc...

Softline Testing Physical Tests

The softline physical tests measure strength properties, color fastness performance and dimensional
changes of the samples provided. Products are tested with specialized equipment in laboratory
conditions in order to estimate potential problems consumers may face during use in daily life.
Physical testing allows the observation of the change in behavior of the products when any strength
and/or washing procedure is applied on the product.

Hardline Testing

Safety, product quality and performance are prerequisites for all hardline
products such as toys, cosmetics, furniture, jewellery, DIY, etc.

SGS Turkey offers a wide range of customized services and offers assistance
to its clients to develop and market safe products.

                                                                              16
Hardline Testing Toys Tests

Physical and Mechanical Tests (EN 71-1):
This chapter of EN 71 is related with risks like pressing, compression, suffucation,
strangulation and chokking caused by toys.

Flammability (EN 71-2):
This chapter is related with high-flammable toys such as toy-houses, soft toys, baby wears,
masks, wigs etc... Highly flammable materials are forbidden for the production of any kind
of toys. The time it takes for the product to catch fire and the type of flame the product
generates are measured with this test.

Migration of Some Elements (EN 71-3):
This test is applied to measure heavy metal contents of toys and show the migration level
of heavy metals when the children swallow or eat the toy. Lead, Cadmium, Antimony,
Arsenic, Barium, Chromium Selenium and Mercury are checked as heavy metals.

                                                                                              17
Hardline Testing Toys Tests

Finger Paints (EN 71-7):
This test method is specially used for the finger paints. Since finger paints have a very long
contact time with the skin; they are meet specific requirements to be safe for children’s
use. This test method includes all the physical and chemical parameters for finger paints.

Organic Chemical Compounds (EN 71-9)
This test method is also for evaluating the toy’s safety. This method includes several
chemical tests and analyzes the general chemical risks of a toy.

                                                                                                 18
Consumer Goods Hardline Testing

Harmful chemicals may be used in the manufacturing of all kinds of consumer goods such as stationary
products like watercolour and finger dye, glues, playdohs, flask, lunch boxes, pencils etc. In addition,
material that contact with food like tableware, glassware, cooking accessories and packaging materials
may include harmful substances which can cause serious and permanent health problems. Along with
toys, all these consumer products are tested in CTS Turkey Non-Food Laboratory by using the following
tests:

Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde has common usage for industrial substances. It has many harmful effects to human
health. It can easily evaporate at room temperature. The vapor of this substances is highly carcinogenic.
This chemical can also be used in wood manufacturing.

Nickel
Nickel is generally used for metallic components of consumer products. It can cause eczema after long
skin contact

PAH
PAH are the most important substances that can cause a highly carcinogenic effect. The group of these
substances can easily dissolve and connect to the human DNA and cause cancer.

                                                                                                            19
Consumer Goods Hardline Testing

Azo Dyes
Azo dyes are the most common known restricted substances for the consumer products. Azo dyes can
connect the human DNA with their body secretion and can cause cancer.

Phthalate
These chemicals are used to soften the plastic products. They can cause some genetic problems after
long term contact during pregnancy.

Carcinogenic-disperse Dyes
These dyes are generally used for the dying of synthetic products.

Migration Tests
These tests are performed for the food contact materials. Tests evaluate in specific solutions whether
the product’s chemical content can migrate into food or not.

Heavy Metal Content
These substances have very common usage for every stage of the production. They can cause liver and
kidney failures.

                                                                                                         20
Food Products Testing

Food safety and quality are increasingly under the scrutiny of regulators and consumers.
Products that meet these high expectations prevent costly recalls and protect brand
reputation.

Throughout the whole food supply chain, SGS Turkey - CTS provides efficient support
and risk protection through its food experts and laboratories on raw, semi-manufactured
foodstuff and final products in all principal food segments including animal origin food
products (meat, seafood, dairy products), plant origin food products (fruits and
vegetables) and bread, beverages and meals.

National and international standard methods such as ISO, AOAC, FDA, HPA, NMKL and
TSE are used in analysis. SGS Turkey CTS food laboratories are established according
to ISO 17025 standards.

                                                                                           21

RoHS Testing:
The SGS RoHS Program helps manufacturers, retailers and suppliers mitigate the risk of
non-compliance to global and national restricted substances regulations. With a proven track
record in product safety certification compiled over more than 80 years, SGS provides a
respected third-party source to help clients monitor their supply chains and self-declare
compliance with confidence.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
Electrical appliances must be disturbance free and therefore electromagnetically compatible
(EMC). This means that the equipment does not introduce intolerable electromagnetic
disturbances into its environment, and is not affected by such disturbances.

Product Safety
Quality expectations and the range of safety requirements you must satisfy become more
complex every day. SGS global network and expertise provide a single, consolidated source
that can help its clients reduce risk, improve efficiency and ensure compliance to contractual
or regulatory requirements in all manufacturing, sourcing, distribution or retailing operations.

Telecom Conformance
The increasing worldwide use of valuable radio frequency resources for the parallel use of
various mobile telephony technology such as GSM , UMTS or WiMAX demands an
increasingly systematic verification of the standardized parameters to prevent radio network
operators from disrupting each other.

Reliability
More and more end customers demand advanced information on reliability and availability
from manufacturers. This is true for individual electronic assembly groups as well as complete
systems and facilities. Standardized methods of calculation are deployed for the provision of
this information.

Environment Simulation
In real life, products are exposed to various environmental influences such as cold, heat,
humidity, vibration, etc. In order to ensure that the products can withstand these demands
without the functionality being impaired, appropriate environmental inspections are
necessary.

                                                                                                 28

IPC has to be carried out when approximately 10% of the articles have been produced
and using, sample size level I (minimum 50 samples, if available) of the available
production quantity, unless specified.

During Production Check (DUPRO)
DUPRO is performed when 35-50% of the products have been produced. The result that
is obtained from IPC controls the performing of the results and amendments.
