Physical and Mechanical Tests (EN 71-1):
This chapter of EN 71 is related with risks like pressing, compression, suffucation,
strangulation and chokking caused by toys.
Flammability (EN 71-2):
This chapter is related with high-flammable toys such as toy-houses, soft toys, baby wears,
masks, wigs etc... Highly flammable materials are forbidden for the production of any kind
of toys. The time it takes for the product to catch fire and the type of flame the product
generates are measured with this test.
Migration of Some Elements (EN 71-3):
This test is applied to measure heavy metal contents of toys and show the migration level
of heavy metals when the children swallow or eat the toy. Lead, Cadmium, Antimony,
Arsenic, Barium, Chromium Selenium and Mercury are checked as heavy metals.
17
18. Hardline Testing Toys Tests
Finger Paints (EN 71-7):
This test method is specially used for the finger paints. Since finger paints have a very long
contact time with the skin; they are meet specific requirements to be safe for children’s
use. This test method includes all the physical and chemical parameters for finger paints.
Organic Chemical Compounds (EN 71-9)
This test method is also for evaluating the toy’s safety. This method includes several
chemical tests and analyzes the general chemical risks of a toy.
18
19. Consumer Goods Hardline Testing
Harmful chemicals may be used in the manufacturing of all kinds of consumer goods such as stationary
products like watercolour and finger dye, glues, playdohs, flask, lunch boxes, pencils etc. In addition,
material that contact with food like tableware, glassware, cooking accessories and packaging materials
may include harmful substances which can cause serious and permanent health problems. Along with
toys, all these consumer products are tested in CTS Turkey Non-Food Laboratory by using the following
tests:
Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde has common usage for industrial substances. It has many harmful effects to human
health. It can easily evaporate at room temperature. The vapor of this substances is highly carcinogenic.
This chemical can also be used in wood manufacturing.
Nickel
Nickel is generally used for metallic components of consumer products. It can cause eczema after long
skin contact

These chemicals are used to soften the plastic products. They can cause some genetic problems after
long term contact during pregnancy.
Carcinogenic-disperse Dyes
These dyes are generally used for the dying of synthetic products.
Migration Tests
These tests are performed for the food contact materials. Tests evaluate in specific solutions whether
the product’s chemical content can migrate into food or not.
Heavy Metal Content
These substances have very common usage for every stage of the production. They can cause liver and
kidney failures.
20
