Deconstructing centre spreads of music magazine
1.
2. Deconstruction of centre spread of NME
This article makes use of an orange colour
scheme, orange is often symbolic of happiness
and energy, ideas which are evoked similarly in
the main image. The use of orange, however
doesn’t reflect the colours used on the front
cover, whereas magazines such as q often use a
similar colour scheme throughout the whole
magazine.
This article
makes use of a
‘pull quote’, in
turn
highlighting
the key
information
about the
article and
instantly
clarifying this
to the reader
and offering
them a clearer
insight into the
focus of the
article without
them having to
read the whole
article.
Centre spreads and articles in magazine typically feature
drop capitals, with this particular article being no
different. Drop capitals refers to the large capital letters
at the beginning of paragraphs, mainly for visual
purposes. They instantly separate the paragraphs of
text and have a somewhat engaging quality.
The centre spread
features a short ,
introductory
paragraph to
immediately
establish the focus
of the article. The
use of lexis such as
‘major’ and ‘force’
instantly alludes to
this idea of
dominance and
power reinforcing
the title of the
piece, Big Time
Charli.
This article makes use of a bold, clear, sans serif font , a style that is mimicked throughout the whole magazine.
Interesting, the bold font almost mimics the lexis used in the article, for instance the words ‘big time’ suggests
something loud and clear which is reflected through the use of a large, bold font., as you perhaps would expect
the words big time to be written in an old fashioned italic style font.
3. Deconstruction of the double page spread of Q magazine
The copy is
arranged into
3 clear
columns to
make the
article clear
and easy to
follows and in
turn appears
neat to the eye.
The article primarily uses a
serif font, something which
is typical of Q magazine,
therefore its really
interesting to see how this
article really follows the
magazine house style.
The article makes use
of pull quote in the
colour red which is
bold and in turn
instantly eye catching.
As well as this the
article features
conventional drop
capitals, however the
large letter T is
something typical of
Q’s centre spreads and
could be considered a
quirky, interesting
feature that
encapsulates Q as a
magazine.
This centre article follows the magazines house style with the classic red
and white colour scheme and simplistic, minimal layout, with one central
focus, Liam Gallagher (the main and central image) Also it’s perhaps
interesting to notice the layout of the shot. The background is completely
minimal and Liam’s stance is powerful and somewhat unapologetic,
reflecting him as an artist. His styling is instantly emblematic of the indie
genre of music, therefore this is something to consider when planning my
magazine (how clothing affects the perceived musical genre)
