INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction
Art education or art design is growing in popularity. Degrees in art design put roles in many different
areas of business, including production design, consumer services, education, and more within reach
.
Most art teachers believe that art education is for everyone and schooling just for talented, career-
oriented students is not consistent with the goals and objectives of art education. This was probably
the rationale of the National Education Association’s Committee of Ten on Drawing. When it
included objectives such as “to prepare students for industry us purely incidental” and “ the
development of professional artist is not aim of art education” (Klar, 1933) .
The unwritten objective of providing art instruction for each student assumed that art instruction
should be benefit to everyone. If art was just taught for a limited number of fine and applied artists,
it would certainly be considered a frill and not worthy of public support (J.Ulbricht, 2001)
Today, art students should rethink their visual art career goals for several reasons. With growing
opportunities to study art, many art students are learning to appreciate it and consequently seek
ways in future art vocations. Advanced student who have learned a lot about art often have little
knowledge of how to use their knowledge in an art career. Rationale to support art career education
at all grade levels can be seen in the number of people who claim to be artist and the growing
opportunities for people with art skills. According to (tufte, 1983) the need for the individuals who
can improve the visual display of quantitative information will continue to accelerate. Many
companies are looking for individuals who can provide creative visual solutions to
Their problems (Boston, 1996) . Once industrial leaders establish the need for artistic solutions they
often find it easier to employ artist with creative problem- solving skills than train technicians to
think like artists.
4. 1.2 Statement of the research problem
There are many student who are enable in finding a job in the right field. From my own
observations, After graduation most students of art and design uitm choose a position that has
nothing to do with their learning at university. For example choosing a job working in the public
sector, clerks, police and others.
With the regard to art vocations, art student often begin by considering the possibility of being an
artist. Only after some study do they learn about other related art careers . While there are many
types of artist who produce art such as painter , sculptors and illustrators . There are also a variety of
art vocations that support art education such as teachers, critics , art historians ,art administrators
and use art for a variety of purposes . Teachers should inform students that individuals in the later
two groups probably outnumber those in the first group .
5. 1.3 Research Objectives
The research objectives of this study are :
i) To identify the reason why the student choose the course subject in art education
ii) To identify the most problem for student in choosing the right decision in finding the
right job .
iii) To find a solution in finding the opportunities of finding job for the right career .
This research is focused on the problems experienced by visual art students from Uitm that most of
them have difficulty in getting the right job in the field they have learned . This research hopes to
open the minds of either government or private sector so as to create job opportunities more widely
to graduate student . In addition , research is also expected to open the minds of the student about
their willingness or choosing the right path for their own desired career .
1.4 Research Questions
The research questions of this study are :
i) Why most student did not get a right job from what they had studied. ?
ii) What is the best way to prepare those student in their right interest of career. ?
iii) It is the government should get involved to this problems ?
