Planning – the last 100 years 1909 Town Planning Act - forbade the building of back-to-back housing 1930 Housing Act required all slum housing to be cleared in designated improvement areas 1947 Town and Country Planning Act introduced the basis of the current system including requirement for Local Authorities to complete a plan 1955 The national Green Belt system 1968 County structure plans are introduced to co-ordinate and guide local plans 1988 Regional planning guidance is introduced to act as a strategic guide for county structure plans 1990 The Town and Country Planning Act 1990. The act divides planning into forward planning and development control . 1990 The Planning and Compensation Act 199 introduces the plan-led system , affirming that planning applications should be decided in line with the development plan 2004 The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 scraps county-level structure plans and introduces statutory regional planning in the form of Regional Spatial Strategies. 2008 Prosperous Places: Taking forward the Review of Sub-National Economic Development and Regeneration introduced the new Regional Strategy, which would combine the objectives of the Regional Spatial Strategy and Regional Economic Strategy introduced by the 2004 Act.
