ROSE
                                        Script, Stage directions

Scene one:
Rose: Standing at window, reading diary. Upset expressions, just been crying. (Camera zooms into
diary, writing is visible.) On screen placard appears. Rose turns to the door and quickly wipes the
tears from her eyes.
ENTER FATHER

Father: I will be away for the weekend on a business trip Rose. Holding briefcase, making gestures to
show leaving.

Rose: Now is my chance to leave, and escape this arranged marriage. She closes the diary shut,
smiling slightly.

Scene two:
Rose: (Arial view shot) Rose is hurrying along a path, headed towards the bridge. She is carrying her
suitcase.

William: He is standing at the other end of the bridge, sweeping. He sees Rose hurrying towards him,
she looks distressed so he tries to stop her, knowing she is the mistress of the house.
Excuse me miss! He consoles her, they move to sit on a bench, and they both talk to one another in
mime.

Rose: Although upset, she is feels comfortable in his presence.

[Scenes 3 – 8 are a montage of shots]

Scene three:
Both characters sit at either end of the bench talking to each other in mime, they are both happy and
are laughing and joking.

Scene four:
Both characters are walking along a path talking to each other. However, still not extremely close to
one another.

Scene five:
Rose and William sit on the bench together, closer than before. Whilst talking they use more physical
contact, this shows that they feel more comfortable in each others company.

Scene six:
The two are walking down a path in the gardens; Rose takes William’s hat and puts it on herself.
They both laugh, William tries to take it back. They both chase each other. The mood is light and
happy.

Scene seven:
William: A rose for my Rose. He gives Rose a beautiful red rose.
Rose: Takes the rose, a look of utter joy covers her face, she is delighted.
Scene eight:
They both exit, looking extremely happy. Rose is still holding the rose that William gave her.
[END OF MONTAGE]

Scene nine:
They both are walking together.

Father: He sees the two together and is not impressed, his facial expressions show this.

Scene ten:
Father: If you want to keep your job, you will stay away from my daughter! Rose’s father shouts at
William.

William: He is intimidated and tries to argue back, he realises that Rose’s father is serious about his
threat and he agrees to leave Rose alone.

Scene eleven:
Rose and William are seen walking away from each other; both looking distraught. Rose is holding
the rose down by her side.

Scene twelve:
Rose is seen packing her suitcase, she is doing this slowly, as if in deep thought. [PLACARD APPEARS.]
She then ‘snaps out of it’ and shoves everything in the case. The next shot shows the door slamming
shut. We then see Rose’s feet running down the staircase and past the camera. The last shot in this
scene shows her running over the bridge, we see her drop the rose and it falls onto the bridge, she
notices this, but still carries on.

Scene thirteen:
This scene shows a wide shot of the train station, we see Rose emerge through the entrance, she
loads her case onto the cart and sits down to wait for the train. She keeps her head down, as if she
doesn’t want anyone to notice her. She is nervous and overall very emotional. [PLACARD APPEARS]

Scene fourteen:
William is sitting on a bench (the same one he and Rose used to sit on together) he looks deep in
thought. (FLASHBACK… shows him and Rose together…) A look of realisation appears on his face, he
suddenly looks a brighter – realising that he loves Rose and couldn’t care less about his job. He runs
over the bridge towards the gates, picking up the rose from the bridge on his way.

Scene fifteen:
This is the last scene. There is another shot of the train station, we see Rose is still sitting there.
William enters through the same door, looking around frantically, he doesn’t see Rose at first as she
is hidden by the case cart. Rose stands up.

William: ROSE!

Rose turns around, and sees William standing there with the rose in his hand, she laughs and she
runs towards him, he does the same and they embrace lovingly. [PLACARD APPEARS.]
