- Overview What is digital storytelling…Digital Storytelling is a term used to describe storytelling that uses computer-basedtools for creation. It may be personal accounts of events in one’s life, retelling of anhistorical event, a book talk created by students and for students, a portfolio of astudent’s works or anything else that intrigues you. The great thing about digitalstorytelling is that the creator has the opportunity to add images (still and video), music,sound effects, voice-over and text to their story as they create it.Many individuals and communities have used the term "digital storytelling" to describe a wide variety of new media production practices. Sometimes a simple slideshow may be referred to as a digital story. Today, we want to focus on producing meaningful stories, with emphasis on personal voice and facilitative teaching methods. Our primary concern is encouraging thoughtful and emotionally direct writing, not just using technology for technology’s sake. Digital stories combines the longstanding art of storytelling with any of a variety of multimedia tools, including graphics, audio, video, animation and web publishing.Students will develop multiple skills, including: problem-solving, writing, research, technology, interpersonal, interviewing, organization, presentation, and assessment
- Why is Digital Storytelling valuable in the classroom?Digital Storytelling allows students an alternate means for providing presentations andtelling stories with a technology-based creative flair. Today’s students are digital nativesand have grown up using technology in their everyday lives. Allowing them to use thetools that they are comfortable with while in the classroom setting, provides them theopportunity to express themselves in ways that they may not have previously.

Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses in the various components. Make short term goals, and keep a schedule for your students to keep the class on track. Don’t be afraid to let students help each other and teach you!Final Presentation: The portion is just as essential as the other components. Without a result to be shared, it can make students feel inadequate. Of course, some may be so personal they only want to share with you, the teacher, and that’s okay. Celebrate all their accomplishments and milestones!

- Depending on approach (go take pictures or look for pictures) Still Images vs. VideoPhotos can be organized and brought to a computer easily.Video is more time consuming and difficult to log, organize, and manipulate in the design of a story.We recommend that on your first attempt that you (the teacher) go out and pull pictures for the class instead of having them search online… (time factor)Either approach can work. - According to the center for digital stories, there are 7 elements of digital storytelling…
- As a review, the first element is point-of-viewThink about:What makes a story a story?Why are you telling it?Why should YOU tell it?What’s the point? Lesson learned?All stories are personal.
- Every topic/story has a question… sometimes they are unspoken… sometimes they are resolved or unresolved… What’s the central conflict, and how will it be resolved?
- The third element is……Grab your reader’s heart!Tell stories of love, loss, death, mystery, vulnerability, acceptance and rejection.
- Helps personalize the story… this is also the part where kids have the most trouble… have to practice their narrating skills…Narrate with emotion!Use inflectionDon’t be afraid of the sound of your own voice! You have one! Use it!Practice by recording several takes.Speak slowly and with a conversational style.
- Like voice, music and sound adds much to the digital story…Music and sound effects can add depth and sensory detail to the story Music and sound helps set the tone and create a mood.Instrumental music usually works best.Pay attention to copyright and fair use guidelines.
- Consciously economize language in relationship to the narrative.Keep it visually rich.Use few images and short text.Advantage to starting with images first: you can be very specific.Disadvantage to starting with images: can be big gaps between images, leaving you with holes in your story and the need for filler pictures.
