Google and Amazon APIs have done much to sell concept of m2m interfaces but little impact on services currently because of usage restrictions.

Standards to do this ‘properly’ now emerging from OASIS in form of WSRP. But, delivery of portlets ultimately adds significantly to number of services registered in JISC IESR.
