How to pick a survival backpack
Survival backpacks come in various types, sizes and uses. In this article you can read how to select a
survival backpack.

Survival backpack with emergency kit
Since the weather seems to be getting more and more extreme it’s a good idea to have a survival
backpack with an emergency kit in your house. If you are forced to evacuate you can use this bag.
Inside you’ll find all the requirements for an emergency:
Food for 4 persons for a couple of days
Ponchos
Blankets
2 person tent
First aid kit
Waterproof matches
Water purification tablets
Utility knife
AM/FM radio with batteries
Camper stove
Etc.

Having one of these bags in your home is a great idea, because it can be used as both a “bug out bag”
(take the bag and get out of the area) or you can use the contents to provide for basic needs when
the grid goes down.

A thing to consider is that the pre-packed survival backpacks you can find on Amazon aren’t of the
best quality. They cost about $60 and while they do help you can’t expect top notch quality. Stuff will
break down and things will be of lower quality. If you can it’s better to create your own survival
backpack filled with the supplies you think you’ll need so that you can select your own (high quality)
gear.

Survival backpacks
If you’re planning to go on a survival trip or if you’re planning to go hiking a survival backpack is a
must have. These backpacks are very rugged, waterproof (most of them) and have many different
compartments so that you can store your gear in them efficiently.

Survival backpacks come in all sorts and sizes. Of course a 3 day trip will require a much smaller
backpack than a full two week survival hike. You should pack accordingly and there are many
different backpacks to choose from.

The best thing you can do is first consider what you’ll need the pack for. What are you going to do
with it? How much gear will you need to bring? Create your own mission profile for the bag. This will
make selecting the right backpack much easier.

Keep the following things in mind when selecting a survival backpack:
How much gear will you need to carry?
How many days are you going away for?
Would you like MOLLE/PALS webbing? (for attaching exterior pouches and holders)
Will you do a lot of moving with the pack?
What you like your survival backpack to blend in? (If yes, pick black for cities, green for countryside)
What will you use it for?
Once you have these questions answered it’s easier to check whether a backpack you see in a store
or online will fit the role you have selected for it.

Most survival backpacks are waterproof by nature, but spraying an extra layer of water resistance
doesn’t hurt.

Urban survival backpacks
If you’re looking for an urban survival backpack you want a pack that’s not too big (those giant
backpacks with sleeping matrasses do attract attention!), something that will blend in (so NO
camouflage pattern), something you can wear comfortably and that will serve you on a daily basis.

Again, as with the survival backpack first consider what you need and what the mission profile of the
bag is. If you’re commuting from home to work by car you can have a bigger backpack then when
you’re riding the subway or the train to work.

It is recommended to take a pack that has a fair size so you can stuff your daily items in them. Keep
in mind that you will need a bigger backpack when you’re carrying a laptop.

Urban survival backpacks are also known as Every Day Carry packs or EDC packs.
