Controlled Trial Infections in Critically Ill Adults: A Randomized Dressing Changes for Prevention of Catheter-Related Chlorhexidine-Impregnated Sponges and Less Frequent Conclusions Use of CHGIS dressings with intravascular catheters in the intensive care unit reduced risk of infection even when background infection rates were low. Reducing the frequency of changing unsoiled adherent dressings from every 3 days to every 7 days modestly reduces the total number of dressing changes and appears safe.

Notas do Editor
The Chlorhexidine Gluconate Antimicrobial Dressing is a hydrophilic polyurethane absorptive foam with chlorhexidine gluconate. The foam absorbs up to eight times its own weight in fluid while the chlorhexidine inhibits bacterial growth under the dressing.
-CHG is a proven antimicrobial agent, but does not have sustained effectiveness when used only for skin preparation during catheter insertion.

“ Use of a commercially available chlorhexidine-impregnated sponge dressing at the insertion site of central venous and arterial catheters led to a threefold reduction in catheter-related bloodstream infections in a recent prospective, randomized study.” (Mermel, 2000)
