Creating Critical Thinkers Through An Academically Challenging Program Grounded In Judaism
Last week’s Marblehead Reporter featured a front page article on the CHAMPS
program that CHA and the Ford School of Lynn have been conducting for the
past 3 years. Both schools were honored for this program and received the
Zakim Award at ADL’s Interfaith Seder, an event you can read about in the
Jewish Advocate. In last week’s Jewish Journal, a story was featured high-
lighting the CHA grade 8 Holocaust studies and the various activities and
projects that are involved. There are so many “happenings” at CHA, such as
the workshops Mordechai Rosenstein conducted at school this week,
and his exhibit at Sovereign Bank, and the 3rd grade Shabbat
Dinner, and the Shabbat services led by CHA students at Temple Sinai,
and the 6th grade Bar/Bat Mitzvah program and the Friends of Hillel
Library Event. While it is virtually impossible for the media to cover all of
these events, we promise that we will continue to be the first and foremost
vehicle that delivers the news about CHA “happenings”.

Jocelyn Segal’s objectives for her
third grade students are rooted in
the academic and social skills in
Jewish value texts that focus on
how to learn in a community.
The curriculum explores Jewish
values through writing, discussion,
art, storytelling, movement, and
music, with the following
objectives:
• Teach students a wide range of thinking skills, such as: self-
monitoring, collaboration, questioning, listening, flexibility in
thinking and evaluating ideas, and how to respectfully challenge.
• Create a dynamic and
welcoming Judaism that
incorporates new insights and
application to their lives.
• Increase connection to their
Jewish heritage.
• Raise levels of self-esteem and
advance leadership skills.
• Create opportunities where students learn with and from each
other in a Jewish format called Beit Midrash (house of study) with
hevruta. A hevruta is a small group that delves deeply into a Jewish
text to understand it literally, question various levels of meaning
and apply lessons to
daily living.
As part of their study,
Rabbi Larry Karol,
who writes music
based on Jewish texts,
worked with the
students to create and
record a song about
listening to and
respecting ideas that
are different from your
