You are surrounded by social media and are probably using it now whether your realize it or not. Which tools are your currently using?
A way to identify your unique skills/traits/characteristics and point of view. A way to gain “insider” information on various fields, careers, companies, trends to help with decision making. A way to connect with key networks more easily and quickly. Less formal—a conversation
While many people see the benefits to social media, the volume, speed and accessibility of information can also be overwhelming. And generational difference in views of relationships and communication styles become really evident when discussing social media. Addiction to twitter, expectations for instant info and responses, boundary issues, privacy issues? Is there such a thing as Too Much Information? Remember these are just tools to help support a very traditional and fundamental behavior—building and maintaining relationships (networking). Personal contact and face to face time still trump and are important to successful/long lasting relationships: tweetups, phone/email, meeting in person.
Social media has made it easier for students/clients to access key insider information beyond corporate sites and traditional means of career education. Learning directly from those who are in jobs/careers that you would want to pursue allows you to develop a more realistic understanding of what exists and how to go about reaching specific goals. As you develop interests and skills you can share those with others who share similar passions and this becomes your key network. We all know it is who you know that helps you reach the next level and find new opportunities and advice.

Twitter is an online service that enables you to broadcast short messages to your friends or "followers." It also lets you specify which Twitter users you want to follow so you can read their messages in one place. Some better questions than “What are you doing?” are “What do we have in common?” or “What is holding my attention?”
