1
2. You are to choose a tool that you were to observe over the period of a week. The tool may be a cooking implement, a
specialized tool for some craft, a cosmetic tool, or anything interesting item from your kitchen drawer or tool chest.
DO NOT choose tools that have sharp points or blades.
N.B. Students should have informed the instructor what they intend to do and received confirmation on
whether the selected tool is suitable.
Learning Outcomes of this Class Assignment
Students will observe and analyze the object chosen and write a well-developed and well-organized descriptive and
narrative essay or extended description/journal entries .
Tasks - Methodology
1. Set up your workplace on your desk or kitchen table so that you can look at the chosen tool carefully with no
hindrances and obstructions.
2. Begin by really taking your time to explore the object. Let yourself be like a curious child or a dedicated scientist.
Notice and write down your first reactions. Spend at least fifteen minutes noting down the visual details of your object
before exploring the other senses, i.e. touch, hear, smell and taste.
3. Put all your information together and write at least one and a half page typed description (Arial 12, double spacing)
that enables readers to imagine the object. You may also provide a drawing of the object that you are observing.
Organize your information so that your reader can follow your process of observation. In a final paragraph, or as you
go along, describe what it felt for you as you worked. Were there stages in your process? Did you feel frustrated and
anxious if you couldn’t label your object?
Submission Requirement
