What most will agree on is that Positioning is something (perception) that happens in the minds of the target market. It is the aggregate perception the market has of a particular company, product or service in relation to their perceptions of the competitors in the same category. It will happen whether or not a company's management is proactive, reactive or passive about the on-going process of evolving a position.
But a company can positively influence the perceptions through enlightened strategic actions
Ask. If not answered – a short elevator ride Think of the length of a twitter message (160 characters) Plain ENGLISH, please When I was recruiting, the first part of my pitch was something like: I’m a recruiter that helps marketers and designers find jobs in the technology, retail and consumer goods industries. What that means for you is…. And I would always personalize it based on who I was talking to You can use this story – this elevator pitch, positioning statement when you send your resume out
CRUEL REALITY PART OF MY TALK I’ve probably looked at 10,000 responses to job postings Most get a total of 15 seconds of my eyes. If you are LUCKY. You get 15 more seconds and they look you up in various social media. And if you are really lucky and fit something, you might get a more thorough look. Corporate recruiters / HR screen OUT, Staffing firms screen IN MY POINT: that positioning statement needs to be relevant to keep eyeballs on your information. And that’s not as likely to happen without knowing who you’re talking to or a lot of research.

Reach out to them BASHFUL? EMAIL FIRST, then Call Do NOT send your resume when you do this.
Reach out to them NOT BASHFUL? KNOW THEM? CALL. You want to start with the best case option – buying them breakfast/coffee If they say they don’t have time, ask if you can ask them a few questions now (and have them ready) If they say no again, which they probably won’t ask them for a referral to someone else as great as they are who might be able to share their experience.
So you’ve got them talking with you, which is AWESOME. Congrats. Why did I feel compelled to put in a pie chart? (you listen 80% of the time) Why? Ask and add You are there to learn from them You will learn something if you listen people love talking about themselves, so they’ll like you. SO – be prepared with questions to ask them. Then, once you’ve learned from them, you can ask them for feedback on your resume / elevator pitch. Then you can ask either of both of these questions. You’ll probably get a referral.
