1. Santa’s little helpers move on to bigger things at Argos
Not surprisingly, the Christmas
trading period is easily the busiest
for the 700 or so Argos stores
located across the UK and Ireland.
To cope with this, the company
needs to take on no less than 20,000
temporary staff. Of course, there are
always lots of people looking for seasonal work at this time of year and Argos
gets at least its fair share of applicants because, apart from earning some very
useful Xmas spending cash, temporary Christmas employees also enjoy an
automatic 10% staff discount on all their own purchases so they can save money
on their presents as well.
To make sure they get the right calibre staff,
Argos are geared up to handle several
hundred thousand individual applications
every season. Although working at the
company’s stores can obviously be quite
frenetic in the run up to Christmas, hours are
flexible and there is ample training and
opportunity. People clearly enjoy it since
many previous temporary employees have
applied for permanent jobs and have gone
on to be a retail manager, higher up in the
company.
As the largest non – food retailer in the British Isles, Argos has a store within 10
miles of 95 % of the population so anyone seriously interested in a temporary
Xmas job should be able to find one within comfortable commuting distance.
Of course, if you are one of those who aspire to possibly moving on from a
temporary position to a full-time career with Argos, there is usually a variety of
opportunities in-store and at the company’s Avebury headquarters complex at
Milton Keynes. You can read more about temporary and full-time retail career
opportunities, including graduate careers, at the company’s dedicated
recruitment website at www.argoscareers.com.
