1. Ice cream cake
Ice cream cake can be one of two
things: Cake that has layers of ice
cream throughout, or frozen ice
cream that is shaped like a cake.
The moniker of ice cream cake
actually stems from desserts that
are made from ice cream, such as
chocolate chip cookies that have a
thick layer of ice cream between
two cookies to make a cake, or even
trifles, which were first documented as
being served as desserts during the Renaissance Period. Ice cream cakes are most
commonly served as a different kind of frozen cake for birthdays and other
celebrations. However, it is of importance to note that in recent years some people
have even used ice cream cakes for wedding cakes to change things up from the norm.
Ice cream cakes are not some newly founded culinary innovation of the present day.
Rather, they can be traced all the way back to the Victorians, who made smaller ice
cream cakes that they called bombes—which contained ice cream and fruits that were
shaped decoratively using molds, often using cake or even biscuits for a lined crust
and added texture or crunchiness. There are even ice cream recipes that have been
uncovered which date all the way back to the late 1800s.
During the present day, ice cream cakes can be found at most ice cream stores, and
even ordered entirely customized. Most grocery stores with a bakery on hand make
them as well. There is an abundance of different styles of ice cream cakes and a
multitude of varying flavors to choose from. They are most often made by using
several different flavors of ice cream, in separate layers, and then topped with softer
ice cream or soft frozen frosting for decoration. In the US, ice cream cakes are very
popular, and many well-known ice cream store chains frequently
advertise bargains for them on television.
