artist. He is wearing a gold chain, a vest top and the trainers he is
MASTHEAD wearing are very loud and outrageous. This suggests that he is an urban
FLASH artist and the genre of music is rap/ RnB. In the background there is
graffiti which is a sign of rebellion and also the artist himself has a tattoo
on his arm which is also a sign of rebellion. Also in the background the
MAIN floor looks as if it is a dance floor which also relates to the genre of
IMAGE music being portrayed. The excitement on his face shows he is bold and
comical. The way his arms are out suggests he is inviting and that he is
reaching out to the audience.
MASTHEAD - the colour is red which is a vibrant and popular colour.
This can relate to the content of the magazine and also the house style
that is being portrayed. The text being next to the masthead make it
seem as important as the title of the magazine. This is clear because the
MAIN
word ‘Starring’ is used and this is a word that is used in films, so it shows
COVER a sense of importance.
LINE HEADER – emphasises the fact that this issue has a ‘Special’ feature that
is 16 pages long. It entices the audience to find out what the tour special

7. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD ANALYSIS
MAIN IMAGE – the main image is of Dizzee Rascal. dressed in a big puffy coat which is red . The colour stands
out and the jacket looks expensive. This links to the heading ‘From Tags to Riches’. His jeans look like they have
some sort of big logo on the front of them making them loud and very bold. This is a stereotypical style that an
urban artist portrays. His facial expression suggests that he is up to no good which shows signs of rebellion. The
medium shot of him allows the audience to see a close up of what he is wearing and the type of style he
portrays.
MISE EN SCENE – the shot has been taken in front of a wall of graffiti. This also reflects the type of artist he is.
For example he is shown holding a can of spray paint and aiming it at the wall which suggests he is doing the
graffiti himself. This again shows a sense of rebellion.
PAGE NUMBER/DATE/NME TITLE – the title of the magazine is very small and has been put with the date and
page number at the bottom left hand corner of the page.
OTHER IMAGES – also images of empty beer bottles and an old stereo. This shows his rebellious ways which
suggests he likes to party like the target audience it is aimed at. They also add to the mise en scene of the shoot.
COPY – A drop cap is used to start the article off. It takes up 6 lines. The article is organised into columns which
makes it neat and look professional. The columns text wrap around the images also.
SUB HEADING – summarises what the article is about. Dizzee Rascals name is in bold which emphasises that the
article is about him.
MAIN HEADING – anchors the main image. The word ‘From’ is on a slant and the rest of the main heading is
arranged informally. The heading is in upper case which makes it look bold and makes it stand out.
BYLINE – credit for the author and photographer. Placed by the side of the masthead for it to be read.
CAPTION – which says Dizzee. This is often used for other articles in the magazine so it distinguishes what
artists are on what page.
8. ANALYSIS OF WRITTEN ARTICLE
The article in itself is about how the producers are prepared the set for when Dizzee
Rascal arrived. It explains how they set up the graffiti background and how there are
lots of people at the set who are waiting for him to arrive. This would suggest that he is
a popular artist and that he is seen as important. It also goes on to say that he arrived
with open arms as he greeted everyone by shaking their hands. The article overall talks
about everything that has been done for the arrival of Dizzee and how crowds of fans
have been waiting outside in anticipation to try and catch a glimpse of him. It is written
in 4 short columns each of approximately 75-100 words. The columns text wrap the
images so that the writing does not overlap the images. In-between each column there
are lines which are faint but can clearly be seen. This makes the columns more
organised. The style of the article is informally written. For example ‘there’s loads’ is
written. Also the way in which Dizzee is quoted represents the type of artist he is. The
main heading is quite dramatic. It’s bold, big and stands out on the page. The way in
which its written is it’s on a tilt and the ‘Tags’ and ‘Riches’ is written larger than the
other words in the heading to represent its importance.
9. HOUSE STYLE - NME
The house style is represented by the use of colour
throughout the magazine. For example the colours red,
black and white are used for the masthead, cover lines
and for the content inside. These colours are all
appropriate for this genre of magazine as the
connotations of the colour red are anger and the music
portrayed through this magazine is indie/rock music.
Also the colour white can connote clarity and a sense of
fresh new music which links back the name of the
magazine which is New Musical Express. They also
create an informal and attractive image which relates to
the house style .
