The University of Southampton is a global leader in spinning out companies from its research. Its Marine & Maritime Institute (SMMI) brings together over 300 academics working on research related to the marine and maritime sectors. SMMI focuses on four themes: climate and environment, energy and resources, trade and transport, and society and government. There are many ways for businesses to collaborate with SMMI, including student placements, sponsored research, knowledge transfer partnerships, and collaborative research projects funded by the European Commission.

Student Placements/ Projects • Undergraduate Projects – Penultimate year: Individual – Final year: Group • Undergraduate Placements – Usually over the summer vacation – May be linked to a project • Postgraduate Projects & Placements – Linked to Masters programmes – Vary in length and duration (3 – 12 months) – Tackle industry problems 11

Sponsored Doctorates • Engineering Doctorate: – 4 year doctoral award (EngD) sponsored by industry and Research Council • Collaborative PhD – Student follows University training programme – Based at company for most of period – Costs covered by industry • CASE Studentship – Traditional PhD part sponsored by Industry and Research Council – 3 months spent at company over 3 years of study • Industry Sponsored – Traditional PhD fully sponsored by Industry 12

Sponsored Research • 40% of the University’s research conducted in collaboration with industry including: • UK Research Council, TSB or EC Funded collaborative research taking new thinking to market • Contract research to investigate specific company need • Establish University Technology Centre (UTC) or Partnership that establishes long-term relationship • Current UTCs collaborators include Rolls Royce, Airbus, RNLI and Lloyds Register 14

Collaborative Research / FP7 • 10% of our research funding comes from FP7 projects (EC R&D Funds) • Currently collaborating with leading companies including Rolls Royce, Wärtsilä and Carnival on projects looking at: – Innovative materials for antifouling – Mitigation of underwater noise – Development of new materials

The G-factor International University Ranking measures the importance of universities as a function of the number of links to their websites from the websites of other leading international universities. The G-Factor is based on the following premises: Universities are in the business of creating and disseminating knowledge. Universities are prolific sources of web content. The truism that "an organization becomes its website" really is true for universities (or at least the totality of the web content of a university is more than a reflection of the total embedded knowledge of the university - it increasingly IS the the embedded knowledge of the university). "If it's not on Google is doesn't exist!" Disturbing to some, but a reality to the majority for whom the Web has become a seamless part of their knowledge environment. Academics and instititutions that recognize and respond to this new environment ultimately will be among its beneficiaries. Citation is the highest form of flattery in academia: measures of citation rates, while they remain controversial in the detail of how they are applied, are generally acknowledged in principle as one of the most objective measures of the importance of academic works. The essential concept behind the G-Factor is therefore to search (using the Google Search Engine) on every leading university's website for links to the websites of other leading universities and count the total number of such links. This number is the G-Factor.
- Southampton is widely-regarded as one of the birthplaces of the optic fibre and we still lead the world in the field of optoelectronics. Our aeronautical engineers have been instrumental in making aircraft engines quieter and more efficient through innovative approaches to wing and engine design. We are a leading light in the development of the World Wide Web and one of our visiting professors is Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who is often cited as the ‘father’ of the internet. We have experts working across the globe on climate change and our National Oceanography Centre and School of Ocean and Earth Science are the UK’s hub for key research into global warming, ocean processes and coastal erosion. Southampton is a world leader in the investigation of links between a mother’s diet and lifestyle and the health of her children into adulthood and our researchers have published groundbreaking studies into foetal health and later development. The University is also home to a number of world-leading research centres including: the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton; the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research; the Optoelectronics Research Centre; And the Institute of Developmental Sciences; In early 2008 the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) announced funding for 2 new national research centres at the University through the Science and Innovation Awards: the national Centre for Advanced Tribology (nCats), based in the School of Engineering Sciences, and the National Centre in Foundational Operational Research (Schools of Mathematics and Management). As a university in a city with a strong maritime heritage, we offer courses with a maritime or marine focus across the majority of our academic schools and our Institute for Maritime Law is the largest centre of its kind in the UK. Arts and humanities are strong at Southampton and we have a unique suite of arts centres at our Highfield campus, including the Nuffield Theatre, the Turner Sims Concert Hall and the John Hansard Gallery.
