1. Description of the students
At Thai Nguyen University of Education, English has been taught on the credit-
based system. English is divided into three units of study: unit one and two are for
General English (GE), unit three for English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In the same GE
class, there are students from different faculties, learning different majors. They can be
first, second, or third year students. However, they do not differ in terms of their English
proficiency level. The size of a class ranges from 30 to 70 members. Only in an ESP
class, the students are from the same major. A student has to take the three units
respectively; the two GE units must be done before the ESP one. For GE, students have
three lessons on the same day every week. For ESP, they meet twice a week, two lessons
at a time.
The students in this project are GE students at Thai Nguyen University of
Education. They are required to learn English using the textbook New Cutting Edge.
They are all at pre-intermediate level although they come from different falculties.
Each module in New Cutting Edge is divided into 7 to 9 periods, 50 minutes for
each. This lesson plan is designed for the first four periods of module 1. (The lesson titles,
objectives and duration is given clearly in each lesson plan).
2. Materials and resources
The New Cutting Edge Student Textbook, overhead projector, board and handouts
are the main materials to be used in the lessons. The activities are designed based on the
student textbook. Overhead projector is used to support the teacher’s presentation.
Sometimes the teacher needs the board to write draft. In period 2 (Language focus 1),
handouts on how to make questions will be given to the students. In period 4 (Language
focus 2), worksheets will be delivered to the students so that they can take part in the
additional practice.
In the first period, the students will have to listen to a small monologue. The
teacher will use her laptop and loudspeaker to support the lesson in order to save time and
make the lesson easier to be implemented.
Besides, some of the Web 2.0 tools are used to design additional practice, which is
expected to assess students’ understanding and participation. An exercise resource
developed using the software Hot Potatoes is uploaded on the blog http://autumn-
perfume.blogspot.com. The presentations of the four lessons are shared on Slideshare (the
URL is given in each lesson plan).

                                                                                             3
3. Web-based resources
Information and communication technology has been developing strongly in
recent decades. It has been proved to be an effective aid to all the fields of life,
particularly in teaching and learning. In this case, ICT is employed to support the teaching
and learning of English language.
Web 2.0 tools such as Hot Potatoes, Blogger, Slideshare, and Gmail have a variety
of advantages. They keep the teacher and all the members of the class in touch. The
students may share their ideas, learning resources and experiences through the interactive
Web tools. Web 2.0 makes it easier and quicklier to assess all the students’ understanding
after the class, which helps both the teacher and the students save time. Last but not least,
Web 2.0 tools allow the students to share the multimedia resources less time-consuming
and costly.
The software Hot Potatoes is used to help design additional exercises for the
students to do after class. Those exercises will be uploaded onto the blog http://autumn-
perfume.blogspot.com so that every student can complete them. All the presentations of
the lessons are available on http://www.slideshare.net/autumn-perfume (detail links will
be given inside each of the lesson). The students writing for homework will be collected
via the gmail thuhuonganha42tue@gmail.com.
4. Assessment and evaluation
The GE final test is divided into two parts: part 1 for grammar and vocabulary,
and part 2 for interview between a student and a tester.
In part 1, a student will have to make 3 questions for 3 underlined words/phrases
in a short paragraph and write 3 complete sentences from the promts given. Time
allocation for this part is 15 minutes. After that, in part 2, he/she has 2 minutes to talk
about a topic written on their test paper. The students have to prepare 20 topics
beforehand during the term.
Therefore, to help the students prepare for the final test, all the topics that the
teacher requires them to write as their homework should relate directly to those for the
final test. Moreover, the types of questions in the Web-based resources should also match
with those in the final test.

HANOI UNIVERSITY POST-GRADUATE STUDIES DEPARTMENT TECHNOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING FINAL PROJECT LESSON PLAN WRITE-UP Instructor: Nguyễn Quang Vịnh Student: Nguyễn Thị Thu Hương Class: K19A1 Date of birth: 23/02/1989 Email: thuhuonganha42tue@gmail.com Mobile phone number: 0975 945 693 Hanoi, June 2012

  • 3. 1. Description of the students At Thai Nguyen University of Education, English has been taught on the credit- based system. English is divided into three units of study: unit one and two are for General English (GE), unit three for English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In the same GE class, there are students from different faculties, learning different majors. They can be first, second, or third year students. However, they do not differ in terms of their English proficiency level. The size of a class ranges from 30 to 70 members. Only in an ESP class, the students are from the same major. A student has to take the three units respectively; the two GE units must be done before the ESP one. For GE, students have three lessons on the same day every week. For ESP, they meet twice a week, two lessons at a time. The students in this project are GE students at Thai Nguyen University of Education. They are required to learn English using the textbook New Cutting Edge. They are all at pre-intermediate level although they come from different falculties. Each module in New Cutting Edge is divided into 7 to 9 periods, 50 minutes for each. This lesson plan is designed for the first four periods of module 1. (The lesson titles, objectives and duration is given clearly in each lesson plan). 2. Materials and resources The New Cutting Edge Student Textbook, overhead projector, board and handouts are the main materials to be used in the lessons. The activities are designed based on the student textbook. Overhead projector is used to support the teacher’s presentation. Sometimes the teacher needs the board to write draft. In period 2 (Language focus 1), handouts on how to make questions will be given to the students. In period 4 (Language focus 2), worksheets will be delivered to the students so that they can take part in the additional practice. In the first period, the students will have to listen to a small monologue. The teacher will use her laptop and loudspeaker to support the lesson in order to save time and make the lesson easier to be implemented. Besides, some of the Web 2.0 tools are used to design additional practice, which is expected to assess students’ understanding and participation. An exercise resource developed using the software Hot Potatoes is uploaded on the blog http://autumn- perfume.blogspot.com. The presentations of the four lessons are shared on Slideshare (the URL is given in each lesson plan). 3
  • 4. 3. Web-based resources Information and communication technology has been developing strongly in recent decades. It has been proved to be an effective aid to all the fields of life, particularly in teaching and learning. In this case, ICT is employed to support the teaching and learning of English language. Web 2.0 tools such as Hot Potatoes, Blogger, Slideshare, and Gmail have a variety of advantages. They keep the teacher and all the members of the class in touch. The students may share their ideas, learning resources and experiences through the interactive Web tools. Web 2.0 makes it easier and quicklier to assess all the students’ understanding after the class, which helps both the teacher and the students save time. Last but not least, Web 2.0 tools allow the students to share the multimedia resources less time-consuming and costly. The software Hot Potatoes is used to help design additional exercises for the students to do after class. Those exercises will be uploaded onto the blog http://autumn- perfume.blogspot.com so that every student can complete them. All the presentations of the lessons are available on http://www.slideshare.net/autumn-perfume (detail links will be given inside each of the lesson). The students writing for homework will be collected via the gmail thuhuonganha42tue@gmail.com. 4. Assessment and evaluation The GE final test is divided into two parts: part 1 for grammar and vocabulary, and part 2 for interview between a student and a tester. In part 1, a student will have to make 3 questions for 3 underlined words/phrases in a short paragraph and write 3 complete sentences from the promts given. Time allocation for this part is 15 minutes. After that, in part 2, he/she has 2 minutes to talk about a topic written on their test paper. The students have to prepare 20 topics beforehand during the term. Therefore, to help the students prepare for the final test, all the topics that the teacher requires them to write as their homework should relate directly to those for the final test. Moreover, the types of questions in the Web-based resources should also match with those in the final test. 5. Lesson plan 4
