Media Center September Newsletter Issue: September 1, 2011 Created by: Autumn Schaffer Library Orientations: Complete! All of the library orientations are officially complete! Every class, pre-k through 5 th grade has met in the media center for their 30 min orientation on how to check out books, how to treat books, and how to look for books in the media center. Now all students are able to begin checking out books. Also- all new students have been put into the system! Media/Technology Committee Meeting The media/technology committee met this month to talk about any services we can provide for the teachers. Two classroom teachers attended as well. We discussed the new headphones with microphones that were purchased through a grant. These will be barcoded and checkout to the computer lab, which is where they will stay. We also discussed upcoming training on web 2.0 tools. The teachers suggested a review on some of the components of activstudio. The committee agreed that a short review during professional training would be best. Older software has been found within the computer lab. The committee discussed if this software should be barcoded and placed within the media center or if it should remain in the computer lab. For right now, it was decided, this software should stay in the computer lab until we find out how many teachers are interested in using it. Homework Lab is Open! Beginning on August 30, the homework lab is open in the media center from 7:00- 7:30. Students may leave the cafeteria after they have eaten and go to the media center to receive extra help on homework. There will be 4 or 5 staff members to aid them. The library computers will also be available for student who need to research for class projects.
Science Committee Meeting The science committee met with the technology and media department to plan Science Day activites, which will be held on September 9. The science committee described specific activites that were planned for each grade level. They proposed some ideas of resources that the media specialist and technology teacher could help them find and create. The supplies list was given to the secretary for her to order the materials. The media specialist will begin work looking through science level readers and science kits that are avaialbe in the media center. She will also search the nonfiction and fiction section to find books pertaining to the specific topics covered by specific grades. On this day the computer lab will serve as an area for students to research inventors. The computer lab teacher has a research activity planned using the computers.
