This Preasentation is to know about the characters in the book, getting to know their direct and indirect characterization, it also includes things about the author of the book the opinion I had on this book. 2. SETTING
• The setting of this book is Mission Street, San Francisco, CA. in the bad side of the
neighborhood.
• This story took place in 1990
• The area where they lived is a very bad neighborhood where houses/apartments get
broken into everyday and there are always shooting.
• Later they moved to the good side of the neighborhood where the rich people lived
with nice gardens and cars.
• He used to go to Franklin High school where people used to take weapons and get
into fights every day and where people stole anything.
3. CHARACTERS
• The main Character is
• Lincoln ( main character) he is shy but once he gets confortable he gets very confident.
• Roy- He is a cop he is the boyfriend of Lincoln's mom he is a bad guy he always tries to
take attention away from Ana to spend time with Lincoln.
• Tony- he is an old friend from the barrio that they had a fight with he Is very loyal and if
you betray it would take a lot to earn his trust back.
• James- One of the basketball players in the rich school
• Coach Ramos- basketball coach that appreciates having linc on his team
• Ana (Lincoln’s mom)- she is a busy woman she takes care of lots of business and she
barely spends time with her son Lincoln.
4. TONE
• The tone of this book is Confident using words that show positive outlook; sure, indeed,
you can do it
Dedicated using strong words about sticking with it: stay with it; keep going; don't give
up.
5. “QUOTES”
• “ I am tall, Flaco, ( skinny) with big brown eyes”
• “ I am Confident but shy just get to know me.”
6. OPINION OF BOOK
• What I thought of this book is that is VERY GOOD it was worth reading it all the intense
scenes, all the drama between the characters all the betraying between best friends and
family. The fights he got into all the things that happened in his new neighborhood and
what other people were talking about in his old one. That he wouldn’t talk to them
anymore because he feels like he is one of the rich kids. All the things that happened
were so good once you start reading it you cant stop.
7. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
• Gary Soto, born April 12, 1952, was raised in Fresno, California. He is the author of
eleven poetry collections for adults, most notably New and Selected Poems, a 1995
finalist for both the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the National Book Award.
• After high school Soto went to the California State University at Fresno to study geology.
One day he came across a book of poetry on a shelf in the college library. He read it,
liked it, and began to write poems of his own. He enrolled in his first poetry-writing class
in 1972. he was twenty years old at the time. That's when he decided to become a writer.
He graduated from the university with a degree in English. He then went on to get a
Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. He have been writing poetry, short stories, and
novels for children and adults ever since.
