How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
• Age
2. Age: youth
Age is represented as being a symbol of vulnerability. For example, the band
members (youth) are shown as easily manipulated and are the victims of the
story, as they succumb to addiction to drugs provided by their producer.
Youth is also portrayed through behavior, such as playing instruments and
partying, common activities of teenage/ young adults. This behavior creates a
clear contrast between youth and older social groups
Dialogue and body language are also different, often portrayed as unsure and
lacking confidence, voices and opinions are also less influential.
3. Age: older generation
Older age groups a represented throughout the film as possessing more power
and more influence than younger age groups, often in dominant roles such as
the producer of the band or the owner of the record company.
Older generation is also represented as being much more maliciouse and
manipulative than the younger generations, and are much more motivated by
making a profit out of music rather than enjoying it as an art form.
