Q1: In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?

When we were looking for ideas for our magazine advert
we looked at our music video and we saw a theme of
the graffiti and we chose to carry this on throughout our
magazine advert and digipack. The graffiti fits in with the
genre rock/indie, we chose to also challenge the
conventions as we have picked a bright purple colour
rather than a dark colour as we thought that it needed
some bright injections of colour, when we looked at
other magazine adverts in the same genre they were all
of the band, they were mainly in black and white or a
low saturation of colour. Graffiti is a form of rebelling
against people this is shown on our magazine cover as I
feel that the video shows Fall Out Boy rebelling by
smashing up things in the video.

In our digipack I think that it develops media conventions, we chose to carry on with the theme of graffiti and
also the color purple we thought that as the graffiti is also shown in the music video it would make a good link
throughout all of our media products. By showing the main singer on the front of the digipack it shows that we
are also trying to sell the band/singer by showing him off on the front cover, we chose to just have him on the
front as he is the one that most people remember as he is shown the most in the music videos and photo-shoots
he would usually be in the front or in the middle so people could pick him out from the others. As we had him on
one pane it meant that we have to put all of the band on some of the other panes so it did not look like it was
just a singer rather than a band. There is a clear link through out all media products of purple and graffiti.

Our digipack is developed with the media conventions as we have all of our band members on the
digipack. We chose to just have the main singer on the front of the it as we thought that he was the
most important band member and the one that people will remember his face, he is the one that is
most shown in music videos and photo-shoots. We chose to use an image very similar to the front of
the magazine cover as people may remember the shape of the graffiti and relate it too Fall Out Boy.
We chose to carry on using the graffiti images through out this digipack as well so that Fall Out Boy
have a new image they are shown as more of a ‘bad boy’ band as they are smashing stuff in their
music video. Changing a bands image is risky and changing it could go either way but we thought that
they were very similar to other band so we changed there image a bit.

This screen grab shows the guitarist showing off the skills that he has this is developing
media conventions as it is selling the guitarists talent it is showing that if you bought a
Fall Out Boy ticket you wouldn’t be disappointed by the guitar playing as you have
already seen what skills he has in the music video. It is also showing that the band are
not fake, they do not use auto tune and that they are not together because they are a
‘good looking’ band they are together as they all have raw talent and that they love
what they do.

This clip is of the drummer, It is developing media conventions because you can clearly
see that there is a full drum kit out in front of him it shows him selling his talents and
keeping all of the band in time. Some people just remember the main singer but the
drummer is keeping the whole band together. With the rock genre close ups of the
drummer are usually shown as they are usually the ones that are really into what they
are doing and they are in the background and need to be shown.

In this clip I think that it is challenging the media conventions as in other music videos in
this genre we have watched they mainly use artificial lighting. We chose to use natural
lighting as when we tried it with artificial lighting it looked rubbish as we did not have
strong enough lights to light up the whole tunnel. The mid shot of the band singer lets
the audience see the singers face and what type of clothes he is wearing it helps
establishes a band look.

This screen grab is developing media conventions as we took the idea of throwing the
flour from the music video ‘Up in the air’ By 30 Seconds To Mars where they threw
powder paint around. We thought that this would fit into the theme of them having their
7 minutes in heaven. In the background it carries on the graffiti theme that is going all the
way through the music video and the other media products.

This screen grab is showing all of the band members on a stage, this is developing media conventions as it is as
if they were playing live on a stage. It is showing what people would pay money to go and see so they need to
show that not only are they good at their music but they have to show that they are going to put a
performance and not just stand there and not do anything. This set up of the main singer on the floor and the
musicians in the background is a very standard set up it shows that we have looked into how bands set them
self up on the stage, this set up is very popular as you can see all of the band members easily and the singer
than has space to move around at the front of the stage and if they were live he would have a chance to
interact with the audience. You can also see the abandoned warehouse in the background with the broken
glass and the graffiti showing that they are still in their original location and they have not swapped to another
location.

In this screen grab we chose to use a overlay in the clips, I think that this challenges
the media conventions as in rock music videos there are usually short sharp clear
clips. This clip is effective as you can see all of the band members on different levels
and in each layer you can see the graffiti. What helps this clip is the natural light
coming through on the back clip of Luke, we did not need to use a filter on this clip
as that clip bought all of the light to the overlayering.

This screen grab is at the end of our music video it is used to sell the band, Andrew
Goodwin says that Star Image is very important as it is what attracts fans towards
them. We kept the star image all the way through by having them dressed in the same
type of outfit and the same type of behaviour throughout all of the band. What helped
keep the band image was that the graffiti was throughout the video which helped
created a bad boy image. They are stood in a ‘Boy Band’ pose, this is so that you can
see all of the members equally and they are all on the same level rather than having
the main singer in front of all of the rest of the band showing that they are a ‘unit.’

Screen Grab 1 When we were looking for ideas for our magazine advert we looked at our music video and we saw a theme of the graffiti and we chose to carry this on throughout our magazine advert and digipack. The graffiti fits in with the genre rock/indie, we chose to also challenge the conventions as we have picked a bright purple colour rather than a dark colour as we thought that it needed some bright injections of colour, when we looked at other magazine adverts in the same genre they were all of the band, they were mainly in black and white or a low saturation of colour. Graffiti is a form of rebelling against people this is shown on our magazine cover as I feel that the video shows Fall Out Boy rebelling by smashing up things in the video.

Screen Grab 2 In our digipack I think that it develops media conventions, we chose to carry on with the theme of graffiti and also the color purple we thought that as the graffiti is also shown in the music video it would make a good link throughout all of our media products. By showing the main singer on the front of the digipack it shows that we are also trying to sell the band/singer by showing him off on the front cover, we chose to just have him on the front as he is the one that most people remember as he is shown the most in the music videos and photo-shoots he would usually be in the front or in the middle so people could pick him out from the others. As we had him on one pane it meant that we have to put all of the band on some of the other panes so it did not look like it was just a singer rather than a band. There is a clear link through out all media products of purple and graffiti.
  • 4. Screen Grab 3 Our digipack is developed with the media conventions as we have all of our band members on the digipack. We chose to just have the main singer on the front of the it as we thought that he was the most important band member and the one that people will remember his face, he is the one that is most shown in music videos and photo-shoots. We chose to use an image very similar to the front of the magazine cover as people may remember the shape of the graffiti and relate it too Fall Out Boy. We chose to carry on using the graffiti images through out this digipack as well so that Fall Out Boy have a new image they are shown as more of a ‘bad boy’ band as they are smashing stuff in their music video. Changing a bands image is risky and changing it could go either way but we thought that they were very similar to other band so we changed there image a bit.

Screen Grab 4 This screen grab shows the guitarist showing off the skills that he has this is developing media conventions as it is selling the guitarists talent it is showing that if you bought a Fall Out Boy ticket you wouldn’t be disappointed by the guitar playing as you have already seen what skills he has in the music video. It is also showing that the band are not fake, they do not use auto tune and that they are not together because they are a ‘good looking’ band they are together as they all have raw talent and that they love what they do.
  • 6. Screen Grab 5 This clip is of the drummer, It is developing media conventions because you can clearly see that there is a full drum kit out in front of him it shows him selling his talents and keeping all of the band in time. Some people just remember the main singer but the drummer is keeping the whole band together. With the rock genre close ups of the drummer are usually shown as they are usually the ones that are really into what they are doing and they are in the background and need to be shown.
  • 7. Screen Grab 6 In this clip I think that it is challenging the media conventions as in other music videos in this genre we have watched they mainly use artificial lighting. We chose to use natural lighting as when we tried it with artificial lighting it looked rubbish as we did not have strong enough lights to light up the whole tunnel. The mid shot of the band singer lets the audience see the singers face and what type of clothes he is wearing it helps establishes a band look.
  • 8. Screen Grab 7 This screen grab is developing media conventions as we took the idea of throwing the flour from the music video ‘Up in the air’ By 30 Seconds To Mars where they threw powder paint around. We thought that this would fit into the theme of them having their 7 minutes in heaven. In the background it carries on the graffiti theme that is going all the way through the music video and the other media products.
  • 9. Screen Grab 8 This screen grab is showing all of the band members on a stage, this is developing media conventions as it is as if they were playing live on a stage. It is showing what people would pay money to go and see so they need to show that not only are they good at their music but they have to show that they are going to put a performance and not just stand there and not do anything. This set up of the main singer on the floor and the musicians in the background is a very standard set up it shows that we have looked into how bands set them self up on the stage, this set up is very popular as you can see all of the band members easily and the singer than has space to move around at the front of the stage and if they were live he would have a chance to interact with the audience. You can also see the abandoned warehouse in the background with the broken glass and the graffiti showing that they are still in their original location and they have not swapped to another location.
  • 10. Screen Grab 10 In this screen grab we chose to use a overlay in the clips, I think that this challenges the media conventions as in rock music videos there are usually short sharp clear clips. This clip is effective as you can see all of the band members on different levels and in each layer you can see the graffiti. What helps this clip is the natural light coming through on the back clip of Luke, we did not need to use a filter on this clip as that clip bought all of the light to the overlayering.
  • 11. Screen Grab 9 This screen grab is at the end of our music video it is used to sell the band, Andrew Goodwin says that Star Image is very important as it is what attracts fans towards them. We kept the star image all the way through by having them dressed in the same type of outfit and the same type of behaviour throughout all of the band. What helped keep the band image was that the graffiti was throughout the video which helped created a bad boy image. They are stood in a ‘Boy Band’ pose, this is so that you can see all of the members equally and they are all on the same level rather than having the main singer in front of all of the rest of the band showing that they are a ‘unit.’
