1. A. My second grade class is made up of 24 students; 10 boys and 14 girls. There is an
almost equal amount of black and white students. All of the students come from lower SES
backgrounds and most read below grade level. Being that the students are younger, they will
learn better through movement and participation. Before the lesson, students will participate
in a review of the different place values between the ones place and the millions place.
S. My second grade students will learn the place values of the following: ones, tens,
hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, and millions with 90% accuracy by
the end of the day with the use of a Second Life character that they created.
S. First students will be introduced to the Second Life game. Each student will create a
Second Life avatar and be free to interact in a secured area of the game. The students will then
bring their avatars into the class’s virtual classroom. The class will then participate in
discussions about place value. Each student will use his or her avatar to present at least three
examples of numbers in different place values to the virtual class.
U. This lesson is primarily teacher-centered because the teacher will guide students
through the lesson. However, students will be allowed free time to play within a secured
environment.
R. Students will be required to create a Second Life character and participate in the
virtual classroom discussion. Students will also be required to present at least three examples
of numbers in different place values to the virtual classroom.
E. Because the Second Life game does have some adult content, the students must be
secured in the virtual classroom. Permission slips should be sent home so that parents are
aware of the students’ exposure to the game and how it works.
