This presentation describes reading fluency and what teachers find difficult about fluency interventions in the classroom.

3. A common cause of reading comprehension difficulty
4. The ability to read accurately and naturally with expression
5. Reading without any real effort being exerted like shifting gears
in a vehicle

4. How Reading Fluency Is Measured
DIBELS Next DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency
2. Teacher meets with student one-on-one with DIBELS materials
and a timer
3. Teacher administers assessment, which take a little over two
minutes for Progress Monitoring
4. Accuracy and reading rate are recorded several times a year in
order to ensure student is making good progress towards the end
of year goal
5. 3rd grade students should be reading 110+ words per minute by
the end of the school year

5. The Problem: Once students have been assessed,
teachers want to help disfluent readers, but they
have other students with more severe reading
difficulties. So what can they do?

educational technology to help
improve reading fluency with
students that are at some-risk!

7. Technology Interventions
Students can learn to use technologies like sound recording
hardware and eBooks in order to help them improve their fluency!
