2. What is the Problem?
Caterpillars are getting
eaten by wasps. The
wasps feed the caterpillars
to their pupae.
If the wasps don’t stop
eating all the caterpillars
we won’t have any
butterflies in our school.

3. Our proposed solution...
To build a butterfly shade house to protect the
caterpillars.
We discussed as a class that our shade house
needs to:

Let Water in
Have Soil
Let Air in

5. Where will it go?
We think the best place for our shade
house to go is in the garden outside Room
16 because it already has a frame and we
will be able to care for the swan plants
and butterflies easily.

6. What materials do we need?
Shade Net - with very small holes to let air and water in but keep out
wasps.
Wood
Velcroe for the door
Nails
Tools
Drill

7. Cost
We have written to Mrs Meikle and she is able to get
some shade cloth for us and any thing else we need for
our shade house therefore there will not be any cost!!
Mr Armstrong has wood and tools that we can use
for the frame.
THANKS MRS MEIKLE and MR
ARMSTRONG!!

8. Who do we need to help us...
Mrs Plowright - We need to ask permission to build our Shade
house...
Mr Armstrong - Does he have any tools or materials we could use?
Mr Armstrong came and visited our class and we explained our idea.
He agreed to help us when we are ready to build the shade house.
Mrs Meikle - Does she have any tools or materials we could use? We
have written to mrs Meikle and she has some shade net material that we
can have. She has also agreed to supply us with other materials if we
need it.
Parents - Are there any parents who would be able to help us build our
shade house? Levi’s Grandad has offered to help us build our
shadehouse.

10. Sustainability
What is sustainability?
It has to last for a long time and be reusable.
So other people in the future can learn about it and use it.
It is good for the environment and Earth.
Our shade house will be sustainable because other people will be able to use
it in the future and it is helping protect the monarch caterpillars.
