Innovative, faster and safer access solutions for jack-up-rig leg works - OJME 2015 Speaker Benji George - Business Unit Manager Middle East, Palfinger Systems
Palfinger systems GmbH headquartered in Weng, Austria, is a globally active company engaged in the development and manufacture of highly reliable, innovative and customised access technologies and hull treatment systems for the ship and offshore industry. http://www.palfingersystems.com/en/
Inspection and maintenance on the legs of Jack up rigs is necessary at regular intervals for both maintenance and Class requirements. Conventionally, scaffolding towers are erected and/or rope access teams utilized, which requires an enormous amount of effort, workforce, time and money. To minimize this effort and increase the scope of achievable and safe offshore work, Palfinger systems developed the concept of JUMP (Jack-Up Maintenance Platform) with RC (Rack Cranes) and IP-11 (Inspection Platform).
Climbing on the existing leg racks, JUMP is designed to provide easy and fast access to the different designs and models of jack up rigs. The climbing mechanism is adaptable to Opposable or Single Racks and Triangular or Square Lattice leg types. The modular design allows different leg sizes and designs to be easily configured.
The 3rd Offshore Jack Up Middle East Conference 2015, held at The Address Downtown, Dubai, UAE on 5th - 6th October, awarded "The Technological Innovation Award" to Palfinger systems GmbH.
The award was accepted by Benji George, Business Manager - Middle East. https://www.linkedin.com/in/benjigeorge

Good Morning everyone. It is good to see you all. I am Benji George, and on behalf of Palfinger Systems, Palfinger Group and Megarme, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you.
We start with an introduction to Palfinger Systems. Then we move to the offshore systems with focus on the leg climbing product family providing innovative, faster, safer access to jack up legs with a very interesting video. We will look at the Lamprell Project utilizing Inspection Platform IP-11 for Close visual inspection by DNV GL Class surveyor, followed by a video on Damen Project utilizing JUMP on Rowan Viking modifications.
Introduction
Palfinger Systems has 2 Divisions - Ship Systems with Internal and external hull treatment systems which lead automation of shipyards and Offshore Systems for Jackup rigs and Platforms.
HQ is in Salzburg and factory in Weng, Austria. We work in Denmark, Germany, Turkey, China, Brazil & Singapore. In Middle East, we work with Megarme, which is a Palfinger Group company
A list of our esteemed clients from the offshore jack up contractors to shipyards
The Deck Crane is for small lifts on board, quay side and warehouses. It is a diesel-powered, portable crane with jacking legs and is operated by one man with remote control. Can handle loads of 2.5T@4.2m and 1.2T@8.2m. The dead weight of the crane is below 10T
The Aerial Platform is 2 man basket with hydraulic arm and increases productivity by eliminating man-riding. Easily stowed when not in use, has minimal maintenance requirements with small foot print and can be used access tasks requiring 14m (46ft) vertical reach and 11m (36ft) horizontal reach. 3170Kg weight, with cable remote control. Ideal for inspections, maintenance of areas around the diverter, BOP stack, areas below the drill floor
The Under Platform Access can provide reach of 33m with 2 man basket. Weight varies from 9T to 19T depending on the depth of hull. Installed on offshore wind farms HVDC platforms Germany. SylWin (March 2014), BorWin (August 2013) and will be suitable for offshore oil & gas platform complexes which require UPA
The product family of jack up leg climbing units which provide safe and efficient access during newbuilding, inspection, repair and maintenance of offshore jack up leg structures. The main features are modular design which enables easy transportation, assembly and installation within hours. Adaptable to different leg designs and rack profiles. Spacious and solid work platform. Self powered and propelled. Access all levels above jack house. Fast and independent transfer of personnel and materials. Includes cranes, access arm, enclosures
A quick look at work done by rope access compared to our systems. Rope access specialists will have to maneuver themselves to ideal work position. On IP/RC/JUMP they can work safely at ideal work position on a stable platform which can be contained by full or partial enclosure.
Inspection of the leg prior to yard visit. Non destructive testing (NDT),Changing anodes, Small repairs.Vertical speed up-to 12 m/min. Horizontal reachability 11 m
Payload platform 420 kg + 300 kg in workmen basket. 1.5T payload in CT/MT mode of operation Max. persons: 4 (2 in workman basket) Diesel driven Power supply for tools 21 kW Max. weight of single component 300 kg Total weight approx. 9 t Deployable even offshore Installation time ~1 hr
Checking and repairing of rack teeth, ladders, position lights, brace exchange, anode replacement Steel repair works with higher lifting capacity Can have multiple specialists working on platform. Installation time ~3 hrs Vertical speed up-to 2.5 m/min
Max. payload 4 – 5 t (350 kg in workman basket) Diesel driven Power supply 80kw (45 kW for drive unit and crane, 35 kW for tools)
For large steel replacements and for works requiring an enclosure (blasting and painting) Installation time 10 - 20 hrs (depending on JUMP type) 40 - 50% saving in worktime for surface treatments like UHP blasting and painting, up-to 80% saving for steel works. Max. weight of single component 1,000 kg Configuration can include telescopic crane, aerial platform, crew transport, material transport, ancillary power + enclosure for containment during painting / blasting. Air conditioned environment. Zero discharge. Increases blasting and painting performance due to direct and stable positions. Reduction of overspray. Ensure quality paint coating. Safe and proper welding position

5th April 2015 was the date of this Innovative Project on Seafox MOS Rig Ahmed at Khalid Port Sharjah. For the first time in Middle East Close visual inspection at all levels of jack up leg was done by the DNV GL Surveyor Mr. Piotr Belka. 3 hours set up. 1 hour to install using 10T crane. 40 liters per 10 hour shift.
– Special Periodic Survey (certification extension);
– Acknowledgement of Compliance Scope (safety modifications) in accordance with Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA)
– Leg Extension Scope (the 170-meter legs will have to be extended to 180 metres to be able to work in the deeper Norwegian waters).
Will not require a special crane to reach up to the top of the leg for extensions or removals.
