Editor's Notes

  1. Hi everyone. I’m here to give you a quick overview of Young Adult Fiction at TCC. I’ll begin by delving briefly into the history of YA as a genre, and then provide a kind of highlight reel of TCC’s YA collection. My goal is to familiarize those of you who might not have read very much in the YA genre with what we have on our shelves, and help you match books with readers in the future. I won’t have time to touch on everything, but I’ll share some of our most popular titles and some of my personal favorites. I’ve also created a Young Adult Literature LibGuide, where I’ve compiled all the titles I’ll talk about today and many more. I’ll e-mail out a link to the LibGuide later today.
  2. YA: The Early Days: Prior to the 1960s, teenagers largely either read books published for adults, or read highly commercialized books intended for teens, such as those by Rosamond du Jardin and Janet Lambert. These books depicted an idealized, clean-cut version of adolescence.
  3. The birth of YA as a genre began with Tulsa native S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, which is largely credited with establishing Adult Literature as we know ittoday. The Outsiders was gritty and real, and ushered in an era of books for teens which grappled with real-life issues and circumstances. Other noteworthy authors for teens during this period were Judy Blue and Robert Cormier. The Birth of a Genre: The birth of YA as a genre began with Tulsa native S.E. 4. The Harry Potter Phenomenon: The present boom in YA Fiction was ushered in by the 1998 publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. This worldwide phenomenon, with which I’m sure we’re all familiar, began our current era of midnight book release parties and blockbuster film adaptations. It’s been followed by similarly successful series such as Twilight and The Hunger Games. The amazing expansion of YA as a genre is evident in its sales figures. In 1997, the year before the first Harry Potter book came out, 3,000 young adult novels were published. In 2009, twelve years later, that figure hit 30,000 titles, the sales of which exceeded $3 billion dollars. Additionally, in 2000, YALSA responded to the boom in YA by establishing the Michael L. Printz Award in Young Adult Literature, which is now one of the genre’s most prestigious honors.
  5. Book to Film Adaptations: This huge increase in sales is due to a couple of different factors. As YA mega hits have become part of the cultural zeitgeist, more teens have been drawn in, both by the buzz surrounding hot titles, and by the highly-publicized film adaptations that have flooded theaters in the past ten years. Some of the highest-grossing movies in recent memory have been adaptations of successful YA titles. For example:

  14. Who Really Reads YA?: Another major factor in the recent YA boom is the changing demographics of those purchasing YA titles. According to Publisher’s Weekly, 55% of YA titles are now purchased by adults. 78% of the time, adults are purchasing YA books for their own reading. This data comes from “Understanding the Children’s Book Consumer in the Digital Age,” an ongoing biannual study from Bowker Market Research that explores the changing nature of publishing for kids. This interest in YA from readers over 18 has spurred St. Martin’s Press to coin the term “New Adult,” which is envisioned as a new genre that will reach the notoriously difficult post-high school demographic, which of course applies to many of our students. As Dan Weiss, the Publisher-at-Large for St. Martin’s Press, explains in The Atlantic, "On some level, New Adult speaks to the large crowd of folks experiencing a lot of the same issues of adolescence at an older age. In other words: issues of separation and attachment; individuation; and romantic, sexual, and economic independence. We think there's an opportunity to provide books that 'bridge the gap,' so to speak.”One thing is certain – young adult and new adult literature have a reach that goes far beyond the traditional boundaries of adolescence. I’m over-generalizing, but YA titles tend to be fast-paced, plot-driven, and just generally great and entertaining reads for both teens and adults. So, what YA titles do we have in our collection? And how do we match the right book to the right reader?
  15. How to Find YA Titles: There are a couple different methods that yield good results in our library catalog for YA lit. The first is a keyword search for “Young Adult,” which yields spotty results but does turn up some good options. The second, more solid option is to do a subject search. There are subject headings for “Teenagers—Fiction” and “Teenagers—Juvenile Fiction,” both of which yield different, and successful, results.I’m going to introduce you to and quickly booktalk some of the most noteworthy titles in TCC’s collection, but the books we’ll go over are just the tip of the iceberg. The LibGuide that I’ve created includes a more exhaustive round-up of titles, so definitely take a look at that when it goes out.
  16. Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Paranormal: You’ll notice this category pulls together several genres – Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Paranormal, which sometimes slips into horror. Genre lines in YA tend to be pretty fluid, so it can be difficult to firmly classify a book as romance, thriller, fantasy, etc.Let’s start with the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray witnesses three tattooed teenagers commit a murder, she’s aghast—especially when the body in question disappears into thin air. This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. This five-book series takes readers on a wild ride, as Clary becomes a demon-slaying shadowhunter herself. The first book of this series was recently released as a movie. The Infernal Devices is a three-book steampunk prequel to the Mortal Instruments series. The year is 1878, and Tessa Gray descends into London’s underworld in search of her missing brother. Her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters, who are engaged in a struggle against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. The Club, equipped with an unstoppable army of clockwork creatures, is out to rule the British Empire.
  17. SLIDE 2: The Scorpio Races, by Maggie Stiefvater, was a Printz Honor book. Every autumn, on the island of Thisbe, the CapaillUisce, fierce, blood-hungry water horses emerge from the ocean. Only the bravest riders can break the horses and ride them in The Scorpio Races, a grim tournament of strength and fearlessness. Sean Kendrick, the returning champion, has something to prove, while Puck Connolly rides because the money she stands to win is her last hope to keep her family together. There’s just one catch—she’s the first girl ever to ride in the Scorpio Races. The Raven Boys is the first in a four-book cycle. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be-dead proceed into the churchyard on St. Mark’s Eve. But she never sees the spirits herself until one boy stops and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and he’s a student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue never imagined herself befriending one of the students there, let alone a whole group of them. Along with the other Raven Boys—Adam, Ronan, and Noah—Gansey, and now Blue, are on a quest to find a dead welsh king. This series has fast cars, lots of banter, and plenty of magic. The Shiver series is also by Maggie Stiefvater. It’s a romance trilogy focused on Grace, who has a fascination with the wolves who appear in the forest behind her house, and Sam, the boy she loves, who spends part of his time as a human and part of his time as a member of the wolf pack.Going Bovine by Libba Bray is a different kind of fantasy altogether. All 16-year-old Cameron wants is to get through high school—and life in general—with a minimum of effort. It’s not a lot to ask. But that’s before he’s given some bad news: he’s sick and he’s going to die. Which totally sucks. Hope arrives in the winged form of Dulcie, a loopy punk angel/possible hallucination with a bad sugar habit. She tells Cam there is a cure—if he’s willing to go in search of it. With the help of a death-obsessed, video-gaming dwarf and a yard gnome, Cam sets off on the mother of all road trips through a twisted version of America. The Diviners, also by Libba Bray, is the first book in a series. Set in the 1920s, The Diviners follows Evie O’Neill from her boring hometown to the bustling streets of New York City. The only catch is that Evie has to live with her Occult-obsessed Uncle Will, and try to hide her own supernatural power from him. But when a series of murders break out across the city, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer. As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho hides a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened.Zombie vs. Unicorn, edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier, asks the immortal question: which is better, zombies or unicorns? In this anthology, strong arguments are made for both sides in the form of short stories. The Beautiful Creatures series, by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, takes us to Gatlin, a small southern town in the middle of nowhere. Nothing ever happens there, until Lena Duchannes moves to town. Lena struggles to hide her power, and the curse that’s haunted her family for generations, while also negotiating her romance with Ethan Wate, who was dying to get out of Gatlin until he met Lena. The first book of this series was recently adapted for the big screen.
  18. SLIDE 4: VAMPIRES / PARANORMALWe’ve all heard of Twilight, but it’s just the beginning when it comes to vampires and other things that go bump in the night in YA fiction. There are many, many more Vampire and paranormal series out there.Marked is the first in the House of Night series by PC and Kristen Cast (who are local Tulsa writers).
